DIY: Dress Update

You'd think that somebody with a college degree could figure out a sewing machine.  Especially when said machine still has the instruction manual.

Wrong!

Now it makes this WHRRRRRRRRR noise whenever I press the pedal.  And then the needle jams.  So... I guess I have to take it somewhere to be fixed?  I should note that the machine is probably 20 years old, so it's not like I got a lemon or something.  It's just being difficult (as I feared).

It might be winning FOR NOW, but look what I did without it:

Relax, it's not done.

Choppity-chop-chop!  No more flappy sleeves.  I fixed the slip, too, but you'll have to take my word for it.

Unfortunately for me, now that the sleeves are gone it's more obvious that the bodice is a little big.  So now that has to be taken in, and all of a sudden I'm doing major reconstructive surgery on what was supposed to be the easy part.  Womp, womp.

Has anybody else ever gotten stumped by a sewing machine?  Some other contraption, perhaps?

  1. Maybe it's not threaded correctly and you're getting a big blob of thread where the bobbin is and that's what the needle is getting stuck in. I have that problem sometimes which doesn't endear the sewing machine to me.

  2. I hope it is an easy fix with your sewing machine. I would love to learn how to sew.

  4. Lori, the bobbin is in a secret compartment, which I've never seen before. I felt like James Bond trying to find it. I bet it's part of my problemo.

  5. Hi. Fellow Indie student here. I have never used a sewing machine, but in fact ordered one yesterday through a point program we have at work (earn points for being Safe, turn those in for a prize). So, with that said, I will be having the same struggle very soon! lol.

  6. Hi Paige!

stumped by the sewing machine? Plenty of times! The first one I had was awful. The bobbin kept jamming. I'm very pleased with the one I use now plus I take good care of it, i.e. regular dusting and oiling the machine parts :)

p.s. thanks for visiting my blog and your kind comment!

  7. I'm glad I'm not the only one with a college degree that can't run a sewing machine :)
    I only sew on paper!

  8. Whenever my machine is acting up, I take off the needle plate, take out all the bobbin machinery and give everything a good vacuum. Then I rethread everything and try again. Usually it works.

My machine is relatively new though. You're right, yours might need some repair shop attention.

  9. Paige, I agree with Lori. Is there a little sliding door contraption underneath where the needle goes into the surface that the fabric lays on (sorry for the lame description, I don't even have a sewing machine!) That's where our bobbins used to hide and they would get jammed up a lot, or maybe it was just me....Sooz

  11. Don't worry, sewing machines are like beasts from another world. I have a college degree and mine still sits on the shelf glaring at me. You did a great job without it. It's been fun stopping by today.

  12. Oh, that is lovely! My machine stumps me often... I probably should have read the manual, but at least it gets my simple sewing projects done :)
