I got a sewing machine for Christmas and have yet to use it. Whenever I have something to sew, I stand there in my office and say, "Okay, self. Do you want to learn how to use a new machine today and see if you can thread the bobbin without your sister's help? Or do you want to use Unique Stitch?"
I think you know what I do.
So now it's three months later and I'm looking for a "real" project to use with the machine. Something like this:
Yep, she's already sewn together, but she's not my size. I would tailor her down, and then wear her to weddings, work parties, formal St. Patrick's Day get-togethers... the list goes on and on. She's my favorite shade of kelly green and, according to the listing, in excellent condition. I want! $135.
Or I could do the more affordable route and make a dress:
(Love that neckline!) Again, something I could wear all over the place, including work if I use the right fabric. $12.
Do you sew? What have you made lately? Have you had success using vintage patterns?

I want to learn to sew SO badly! In my mind I am already a fashion designer. Learn to use your sewing machine and let me know how hard it is!
ReplyDeleteI have collected tons of patterns over the year and I've only made one dress and a skirt. (I don't even wear them) I want to practice more but I keep giving myself the excuse that I need a dressform before I can do anything.
ReplyDeleteIf you feel better I was later then you this morning ( from the EBT)! I barely sew and then really only a straight atitch. I would LOVE to have better skills - it's on my bucket list!
ReplyDeleteI love the pattern you've picked out! I don't use patterns very much since I enjoy designing so much, but the few times I've tried a vintage pattern I've found them pretty easy to follow. And this one looks like it won't be too complicated. Can't wait to see what you do with it!
ReplyDeleteMuch to my mother's horror, I can't sew a stich. Or knit. I have tried, but the results were less then appealing.
ReplyDeleteI love that neckline.
ReplyDeleteI made it a point to start pulling out my machine a bit more this year. So far I've done a few quilt blocks and a lot of doggie bandannas...but it's a start.
Love the neck line - go for the pattern. My problem is always trying to find the fabric I want.
ReplyDeleteOMG! Did you look at the measurements on that pattern for what used to be a size 12??? What did women with actual curves do?
ReplyDeleteI took a sewing class in college, I got a 98, points were removed for having blood on my work. (I didnt like the way the thimble felt) making a cool dress would be a great project, and the fact that you are looking at multipurpose styles ensures that it wont just get hung up and forgotten after the first few events!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous: I know! Who has a 30-inch bust?!
ReplyDeleteI love that green dress!! It's just perfect!
ReplyDeleteI really like the pattern as well, but that green is one of my very favourite greens.
I sew things but not clothes. I stick to bags mostly, which I love!
I'd love to be able to sew a dress like that!
Paige! I guess if this was the '50s I'd be wearing dresses like Aunt Bea. Sad. I don't know anybody with a 30-inch bust, probably not even our niece/cousin who shall remain nameless.
