Thrift $hop Challenge

A show of hands, who's heard the song Thrift Shop? (NSFW, by the way.) It's about exactly what you think it would be about: going to a thrift shop and finding all sorts of awesome stuff. There are few things in life I enjoy more than doing exactly that, so when Young House Love issued the Mackelmore Thrift Shop Challenge, I was down.

The rules? Hit up a thrift store with $20 in my pocket, just like the song says. Then photograph my spoils and share them with the world. I also need to find an item mentioned in the song and take a picture of that, too.

Easy. I'm at GoodWill once a week, anyway. Let's do this.

The GoodWill near me is usually better for home items than it is for clothes, but this time I walked into backwards day. I found that tote bag, which has a padded spot for my laptop, and a gorgeous plaid coat in a 1960s cut.

I love the 3/4 length sleeves (not so much right now, but when it warms up a little), and when the collar is buttoned all the way the whole thing looks very mod. I'm also counting this as my "thing mentioned in the song" picture. Hear me out: there's a line that goes "I wear your Granddad's clothes/I look incredible" and this fabric is really masculine. It actually reminds me of the colors my grandpa used to wear all the time, so I'm totally counting it.

In the non-clothing department, I did find something I can use for work.

I assume that some kind of booze originally came in this, but I'll be using it for tools and scissors.

As for the price breakdown, the coat and bag were both $7 and the wood box was $2. Thankfully I didn't have to spend the whole $20, that was just our limit. I also could have gotten a filing cabinet with the remaining $4, but I couldn't think of a good place for it. Maybe next time.

What have you found at the thrift shop lately? Are you jammin' to the song? I've started to hear it on the radio around here, which is fun. Did anybody else end up doing this challenge?

  1. I love thrift store finds! My favorite are the little knick knacks and boxes. I also visit the cigar shops often and get their empty cigar boxes. They are perfect for storing little things for my studio, and I have this small obsessions with collecting boxes, lol.

  4. That's so funny. My best friend just sent me the link to that song a few days ago and it's hilarious. The video is so funny. I recently purchased 2 chairs from the goodwill over the holidays. They were a great find so much so that people kept on mentioning how awesome the chairs were as we were trying to leave the store. I was going to get jumped for chairs!

  6. I haven't heard the song! I'll have to go check it out. I was (somehow) out of the house by myself the other day so I hit up our Savers and found the most gorgeous Clarks boots for Gus for $2, and a pair of Crocs for each of the kids for $2 and $3. I find such great kids shoes there, not so much for myself. They did have thus gorgeous black and white tweed-y winter coat that I loved, but couldn't justify it since I have 3 wool coats already. :) Great haul you got!

  7. Fun! I love the bag. I haven't been thrifting in forever. It's more of a summer activity for me (no idea why, it just is), but maybe I'll run to Good Will this weekend and see what I can find for $20 too!

  9. Sadly, all the good thrift stores in my area are a bit of a drive. When I lived elsewhere, I was practically across the street from a great little shop that always had the coolest things.

  11. I love that coat. I never know what to do with coats with 3/4 sleeves and usually pass on them. But I love the way they look! Maybe I could find some extra long gloves? Heehee.
