Since I was born in the mid-80s, the first decade I actually remember in terms of fashion was the 90s. It's one thing to look at a picture or watch a movie, but seeing some of the weird trends with your own eyeballs has no equal. I always thought my mom was overreacting when trends from the 70s first came back 20 years ago, but now that it's happening with ugly stuff from MY childhood, I totally empathize. It's horrible. Cropped shirts didn't need to happen the first time.
I should also note that this whole experience makes me feel old. I keep seeing kids dressed like Blossom, and I bet none of them would even get that reference.
Anyway, one 90s trend that I think has potential is the floral pattern.
I don't hate florals. I want to clear that up because I actually like flowers a lot. But what I'm not into is dressing like Stephanie Tanner. It's been 20 years since these were last trendy, and I think it's time for an update.
Instead of wearing a tiny allover pattern, look for something a little more graphic, like these flats or this snazzy phone case. I like this blue scarf because the floral pattern doesn't go all the way down, making it a little less intense. The blouse has an allover pattern, but it's a very simple, modern cut. And I'm always an advocate of wearing a neutral with texture, like this crocheted dress. Bringing flowers into your jewelry is a fun solution, too.
I would also pick one or two floral items per outfit and leave it at that:
Very cute, and very 2013. Also, I want that shirt.
How are you feeling about these 90s trends making a comeback? Do you feel old? Do you like the florals? What's your least favorite? Mine is probably acid-wash jeans, but cropped shirts are up there, too. (Ha! Puns.)
