Color Scheming

Do you ever go off on weird tangents in your head when you're trying to plan for something? Of course you do. You're trying to order some new beads and all of a sudden you're thinking about brownies. Or in the case of this weekend, I was trying to price out some bathroom updates and ended up looking at paint colors. Granted, I did need a little paint, but it snowballed until I actually started a new Pinterest board. Siiiigh.

Anyway, after I pinned 857 new color palettes, I realized I could actually do something with them: make inspiration boards! Ding, ding, ding!

So here's the first color combination I chose. Quite the step outside my hooray-for-neutrals comfort zone, isn't it?

The picture itself is really cute, and the apples were too timely to leave until later. I had a lot of fun doing this exercise, so I think I'll keep them coming.

Apple Color Palette
similar rug  //  sofa  //  coffee table  //  side table  //  green pillow  //  yellow pillow  //  tribal pillow
wall color // pendant  //  sconce  //  print  //  plant

As I was working I started to wonder if the red and green might veer into Christmas territory, but I don't think this does. There were a lot of dark neutrals in the picture, and choosing such a dramatic sofa keeps that true for the room. It's the anchor. I pulled in some other dark colors with the lighting, but kept the wood pieces light to play off of the orangey-yellow in the apples. The reds and greens were the trickiest part, but by keeping one muted (green) and one vibrant (red), they don't overwhelm. It's a happy little space.

Where do you get color inspiration? Should I make this a regular thing? Any color combination requests?

  1. I like the round table! I like pink and grey together, maybe that's an idea for a future post?

  2. Great fall colors! You're right about the couch anchoring the room and making the reds and greens not seem Christmasy. I think this color pallet even leaves room for adding other muted colors as well like a little blue.
I'd love to see a room with gray, white and hot pink...the colors of my studio :)

  6. I like the colors but I think it's a little too Christmas-y for me. I feel this would look great in someone's modern apartment for the holidays. Loving the cushions.

  7. I love how you did this, it's beyond my capabilities! I usually just buy what I like without a thought and throw it into my space.

  8. This is such an awesome exercise! The room that you planned is fabulous. You know how much I love color inspiration. I'd love to see more posts like this one. Of course I'm always a big fan of turquoise and red.

I'm with you on the tangents, too. You should see what my internet browser looks like most of the time.

  9. I love looking at design seeds and get totally stuck on pinterest whenever I come across their colors... so fun that you created a design board from it! And I so know how you can go from one thing to another on the internet, points at self, constantly distracted.

  10. I love that sofa (like, so much). And although I am pretty much a strictly black, white, and grey type when it comes to decor, I think this is a really great color theme. I'd definitely do it in my house.

  13. I love those colors together! I like bright colors and that color pallet has some really nice options that I would have never combined by myself. Thanks for sharing, I look forward to for ideas in the future.
