Mixmaster

I've been mixing my neutrals for a long time. In high school, one of my favorite outfits was a gray t-shirt with this really awesome pair of flared khakis. I looked so dope. My mom would try to tell me I clashed but I was like, "Nope, I'm pretty sure I don't." (Actually, I probably said, "NUH-UH!" because that's the kind of articulate teenager I was.)

Anyway, I think neutrals are meant to be friends. You can throw all of them into the same room, so why shouldn't you be able to wear them together? A friend texted me the other day asking about the specific combination of black and brown, which I wear all the time, so I thought I'd use that as an example.

Black & Brown
blouse  //  jeans  //  boots  //  purse  //  similar scarf  //  earrings

See how pretty?! Like anything else when it comes to clothes, there are some things to keep in mind so it doesn't look like you used a dart board to pick your outfit.

>> Find an item that has both black and brown. This is the easiest way to bring the allegedly clash-y colors together. Leopard print is a great option for this, or if animal print isn't your thing, try looking for a purse with two-tone leather.

>> Stick with neutrals. I would stay away from bright colors in an outfit like this, because having a head-to-toe neutral look will keep people from thinking you just grabbed the wrong pants.

>> Avoid espresso and chocolate. Not the foods! Just the shades. The darker you get with your browns, the trickier it will be to make them work with black. Going with medium to light colors, like camel or cognac, will create more contrast and make the look more intentional.

Do you wear black and brown together? What about other neutrals, like gray and navy? (I wrote "gravy" the first time.) Who else wants that blouse?

  1. On style blogs I even see pink and orange together and different patterns mixed in one outfit. So black and brown shouldn't be a problem.

  4. All colors go with all colors. I firmly believe if you have style you can make anything work. I think all of those "rules" about when you can wear certain colors are just silly.

  6. I actually just started combining brown and black- black pants, brown shoes, white/cream/ivory top, usually (though I did it with a chambray top over the summer)- and I think it looks nice. I'm not big on animal print, but I actually love that leopard scarf, and it's the perfect combo to tie those two colors together.

  7. Black and brown together used to be such a no-no...lol! But like you said, the shade of brown makes a difference. And adding an item like the scarf that already incorporates both colors really pulls it all together. Love those boots!

  8. Haha...I love mixing black & brown, and Noel always questions it. I just tell him, as long as he doesn't wear his black belt with brown shoes (or vice versa), it's okay. Baby steps.

  9. I wear black and grey with brien bouts and a brown leather wrap bracelet and brown purse all the time. It's my uniform. I love the combination!

    1. I'm not sure what brien bouts are, but I meant to type brown boots. You suck, autocorrect.

  12. I tend to wear a lot of neutrals too... brown and gray, navy blue... I used to feel weird about wearing my brown boots with a black shirt, for example, but I guess I kind of got over it. Accessories is where it's at. :)

  15. Great advice! I've always been a fan of mixing browns and black, even when people have told me it 'isn't allowed.' I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who's a fan!

  16. I love warm neutrals, they make me feel relaxed. One problem I don't have though, is having to mix them with black because I rarely wear it. Wonserful advice, Paige.
