>> Mini pumpkins. I've seen them at a handful of grocery stores for $.69/each, which is about as cheap as you can get as far as decor goes. They also last a long time, so you can have them around until you're ready to bust out the Christmas/Hanukkah goodies. (Once, in college, we had one last until spring. Magic!)
>> Candles. I'm a fan of the IKEA candles in glass votives, but any old black, orange, white, etc. version will do the trick. Bonus points if you bust out some old brass candlesticks for an extra creep factor.
>> Books. If you have any from the horror genre, or even a handful of hardcovers that are black, grouping them together is easy and free. I tend to do this more by color than by content, as you can probably guess since I have Jane Eyre in my collection.
>> Creepy artwork. Change out a few of your everyday pictures and see who notices. You can find printables on Pinterest, tear pages out of magazines, or check Etsy for ideas. My pictures came out of a Sherwin-Williams color preview for 2014 and have a mad scientist theme goin' on.
>> Black accessories. I use black details in my decor anyway, but I bring even more out this time of year. These lovebirds, for example, aren't very Halloween-y on their own, but combined with everything else around the house they add a darker feel.
Are you getting your Halloween on? What kind of spooky decor is your favorite? Raise your hand if you got the mini pumpkins at the grocery store!

I plan on getting some pumpkins soon. I haven't seen any mini pumpkins at the grocery store yet. Perhaps I just need to look harder.
ReplyDeleteWe picked up a few mini pumpkins at the pumpkin patch at school yesterday, but we still need to get some bigger ones- the husband carves them out and we put them on the stoop. We tend to do more outside- mums, pumpkins, a fall sign, but I've got a few Halloween knick-knacks inside too. I like your suggestions- really easy to find and accomplish.
ReplyDeleteWe usually put pumpkins on our front window sill and on our stoop (somehow ours miraculously never get smashed) and that's about it. I'm terrible at decorating for different holidays aside from Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI'm all about the minimalist Halloween decor too. (Although once again, I haven't had time to put anything up this year and it will probably be the week before Halloween before I do!). I have a lot of black accents in my house too and I like your idea of incorporating them in. Also, mini pumpkins rule!
ReplyDeleteI have nothing Halloweeny at my house. I like that framed street and car print!
ReplyDeleteMini pumpkins have sort of taken over around here, and we put a few big ones outside too. But other than that we haven't really done anything. I was thinking about putting something spooky/cute in the bay window when it gets closer to Halloween. Also, I would argue there are some creepy scenes in Jane Eyre, with Bertha and all that, so I think it fits in ok! Love the birds too. :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome groupings! I especially love the black and white pumpkin.
ReplyDeleteWe have pops of black in our decor too, but I never thought to bring out more of them around Halloween, duh! I love your ideas. ;)
ReplyDeleteBoys becoming men, men becoming wolves! (I really hope that's what you're referring to with your post title.)
ReplyDeleteLove your ideas -- especially the books! How clever. I'm going to look and see if I happen to have any black ones! My Jane Eyre is blue, doggone it!! Raising my hand halfway -- I get my mini pumpkins at a nearby farmer's market, but haven't gotten them yet! I tend to lightly decorate for fall and trade out a little Halloween for Thanksgiving along the way. I have a bunch of ceramic pumpkins, mostly the white ones, and start with them! One thing I like to do is add pics of my children in their kid halloween costumes to my table of family photos.
ReplyDeleteMini pumpkins are always so cute! And I love the idea of using magazine pages as framed art!
