Hopefully you won't see this post at all because you're being redirected properly, but just in case you do, THIS is Little Nostalgia's brand new home on the net.

All of the adjusting and code-fiddling will be done in the next couple of days. See you on the new site!Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-52003305423236802942014-05-30T07:52:00.002-05:002014-05-30T08:01:49.227-05:00Pinterest PicksHappy Friday! It was a short work week for a lot of us, but I actually found that I got more done knowing that I had one less day to jam it all in. Which doesn't make ANY sense given how high-strung I normally am, but I liked the blast of productivity so I'm not going to worry about it. Maybe we should all write to our Congressmen to make three-day weekends the normal thing? Surely we'd all be less stressed out if we had another day for work-life balance. (Americans in general don't get enough time off, but THAT'S another conversation for another day.)

Anyway! Let's celebrate crossing off everything on our to do list with some Pinterest Picks.

First of all, this whole gallery wall is great. The combination of art and objects is really interesting, but the main dish here is the "happily ever after" canvas. I love that script fonts are Having A Moment right now, and I've spent some time wistfully looking at stuff like this and wanting it in my own house. This tutorial involves a projector, which I don't have, but now I'm wondering if I should change that...
This dress is adorable. And I appreciate that they styled the model with a top knot and sunglasses, since that's how I wrangle the ol' lion's mane when it gets too hot to leave it down. I also just noticed the subtle leopard print on the belt and am a fan.
So what are you up to this weekend? We have a combination of house projects and a family gathering, and I had a sudden realization the other day that my nice black heels are kind of ratty looking, so maybe I can slay that particular dragon without too much irritation? Fingers crossed! See you on Monday!Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-59323659027544810872014-05-28T07:01:00.001-05:002014-05-28T07:04:11.273-05:00Wedding BellesI was chatting with a friend last week about the weddings we're going to this summer--we have one in August and I CAN'T WAIT--and that kind of morphed into a conversation about dressing for weddings in general. For the most part, weddings were pretty fancy in the past, but now they're however glitzy the happy couple wants them to be. Which is way more interesting, but it can make picking an outfit a little tricky. I had some downtime over the long weekend, so I fiddled around with some different looks and made a mini guidebook for myself (and you--sharing is caring!) so the next time I'm standing in the dress store like, "Uhhh..." I can think about this instead and remember that I've already figured it out.

Ready? Go!

Let's start with the most informal getup of the bunch. We went to a wedding on a farm once, which was a cool change of pace from the usual banquet halls and hotel ballrooms people do in the city. I actually wore jeans to that, but if I had a time machine I might go back and do a day dress instead. Even though the wedding was super casual, it's still a big event in somebody's life and dressing up even slightly is a nice way to honor that. The look I made for you here would work for all sorts of informal locations: the beach, a park, somebody's backyard, etc. Comfort was the main focus, since you'll probably be doing more moving and shaking at a party like this. Bonus: this outfit would be really easy to wear again. All the time.

This daytime look is my default setting when it comes to wedding wear. If the invitation doesn't say what to do, or I can't really tell just by looking at it, then I put on a dress and some smaller jewelry and call it good. I purposely picked a dress made of lightweight fabric here, since most weddings are in the summer and it's about to feel like the surface of the sun. Ain't nobody got time for heat stroke at an outdoor wedding.

Cocktail:

Because I'm drawn to glittery things like I'm ALSO drawn to nachos, my favorite wedding category is cocktail attire. The main difference between this one and the previous garden party look is that cocktail-attire weddings take place at night. I'd say anything that starts at 5 p.m. or later is a good excuse to get your bling on. For this example I kept with my theme of lightweight fabric (because seriously, the heat) but went with a darker color and kickier details. A fancier dress means you can wear fancier accessories, so I obviously went with the biggest bracelet I could find.

Okay, this one is probably pretty rare for most of us, but since I'm putting together a bunch of looks ANYWAY, I might as well cover all of the bases. You know, for reference. Just in case one of us suddenly befriends Kate Middleton and has to go to the palace. Black tie is another way of saying formal, which doesn't necessarily mean you need to rock a floor-length gown, but whatever you wear needs to be fancy enough to make sense in a room full of tuxedoes because that's what all of the dudes will be in. This is a good chance to experiment with more luxurious fabrics, like lace, damask, allover sequins, maybe even a bit of velvet if you know you'll be indoors the whole time. Get fancy!

So, who's going to a wedding this summer? If you're married, how dressy was yours? (Ours was somewhere between #2 and #3 since we got married at night but it wasn't a super fancy venue.) What's your favorite look here? I'm really into the blue dress from the daytime outfit, but the mere idea of a black tie affair is making my brain short circuit from excitement, so it's a tough call.Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-76318435704717766932014-05-27T08:05:00.003-05:002014-05-27T08:15:28.892-05:00Life LatelyI'm having that post holiday weekend brain fog today. If you're in the States, I hope you had a nice Memorial Day weekend and are having a better time remembering that it's not Monday right now than I am. We also gave ourselves a half-day on Friday, which might be adding to my confusion about what day it is now that I have to be productive agin. (In my defense, it was really nice out and we felt like going to eat hot wings OUTSIDE, so obviously we ran away from our computers to go do that.) Later on we helped my parents finish their bathroom remodel--more on that after I edit the pictures!--and then caught up with some family.

You know what? Let me just show you some Instagram pictures. Here's what I've been up to recently, both over the weekend and a little further back.
>> On Sunday we went to see my grandma and she gave me a few keepsakes, including my grandpa's watch. He fought in Italy in WWII, so I thought it was especially fitting that she gave it to me this weekend. (Yes, I cried.)

>> I took the picture of those flowers on Friday before we started our weekend, and they're looking considerably more droopy now. I obviously didn't water them while we were at my parents' house, and then I FORGOT yesterday, so now they're all half-dead. I did go feed them today after I took the garbage out, so maybe it's not too late?

>> Say hello to my newest statement necklace, which I found on eBay and wore all weekend. I almost didn't buy it because it's three colors of neon, but when I wear it with my usual funeral garb it's more toned down. I suspect my blanket of hair also helps.
So how was your long weekend (if you indeed had an extra day off of work)? Anybody else go see some family? Or work on a bathroom? Or rejoice that it's Taco Tuesday? Please tell me I'm not the only one forgetting what day it is...

How FUN, right? We don't have a tater tot of our own yet (and this is NOT an announcement) but that doesn't mean I can't love a charming kid's bedroom. The vintage-modern vibe isn't something you see all the time--points for originality--and it's a design that I could see working for a three year old or a 10 year old. Heck, it would even be cute as a nursery if you swapped out the bed for a crib.

You know where I'm going with this. Let's see what we need to get this look for the tiny humans in our lives.

>> We have to start with the wallpaper. As a general rule, I don't even LIKE wallpaper and I think this is cool. I was always that kid who made inanimate objects talk to each other, so I would've had a field day with those birds. It's also a great choice for a feature wall from a design perspective, so let's call that a win-win.

>> Since this is a room that can grow with a kid, I didn't feel bad picking out some nicer furniture. The bed and cute yellow accent chair are from Crate & Barrel. There weren't a lot of bright yellow dressers to be found--which isn't surprising but kind of a bummer anyway--so I chose one from IKEA that can be painted to match. (There's also a larger version if you want more storage.)

>> As for the textiles, the quilt is PERFECT. Not only is it bright and fun (and handmade!), but the modern fabrics put into a vintage pattern encapsulate the whole design concept. Boom! As for the pillows, the yellow one is a nice wink to the dresser and chair, while the green pulls another color out of the quilt.

>> Without the red rug and turquoise shelf this room might feel a little matchy-matchy with all of that yellow. When you have things as colorful as the quilt and wallpaper, you might as well make the space room a rainbow.

Here's a quick budget breakdown:

Wallpaper: $96
Bed: $399
Quilt: $275
Dresser: $80
Chair: $149
Rug: $76
Flower shelf: $22
Green pillow: $10
Yellow pillow: $20

Total: $1,127

You know, the longer I look at this, the more I like it for a grown up, too. Somebody not afraid of color, obviously, but still. I can see it.

Let's play the What's Your Favorite Thing game! For as much as I went on about that wallpaper, I think the quilt takes the prize for me. If nothing else, it would be fun to sit and look at all of the different fabrics in the design. I'm also really into that bed and wonder if they make it in a queen size... Would you do your kid's room like this? How do you feel about the non-traditional theme?Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-62891906596616948042014-05-21T07:02:00.005-05:002014-05-21T07:04:14.008-05:00Pastel PartyI heard on the radio a few weeks ago that the weather is pretty much going to skip pleasant spring temperatures and go right from cold and rainy into the hellfire of summer. And so far that's been pretty accurate. After the winter we just endured I would not be surprised if the horrors continued. You jaded me, polar vortex! Now I'm skeptical about ALL of the weather! It probably will be hot and terrible in a couple of weeks, so I've been eyeballing some light colored clothes to help keep the heat away. I assume that I'll need all the weapons I can find.
Blazers are my siren song, so naturally that's my favorite thing here, but the yellow dress is a close second. It makes me want to have a tea party, which I obviously mean as a compliment. I have trouble wearing pastels in large amounts because of my skin tone (they tend to work better on rosy-cheeked people or folks with actual pigment in their skin, not those of us who are zombie-adjacent), so that's why I included so many accessories. Sprinkling in light colors with other things usually helps me avoid the problem of looking half-dead.

Here's a real life example. If you follow me on Instagram, I know you're familiar with my mint green shoes and necklace:
Of course, that outfit is black and gray otherwise, which ain't gonna be happenin' when it's 90 degrees. SIGH. You're a cruel mistress, Mother Nature. (Related: did you see the hail we got last night?!)
Are you a fan of pastels in hot weather? Or maybe pastels all the time? Do you like them in little bits, too? And can we just get some pleasant weather before it gets hot? That would be excellent.Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-64508077127407683882014-05-19T07:47:00.002-05:002014-05-19T08:48:42.539-05:00$250 Bathroom Reveal!Don't you love it when a project gets fast-tracked? We were going to put new baseboards in the family room this weekend (snore) but then we got to Lowes and saw our $99 counter top and decided that the universe was telling us to do the bathroom instead! (Or we really just didn't feel like measuring all of that trim. Same thing.) We ended up pulling everything together for under $250, which was a nice surprise. I had vaguely budgeted a few hundred bucks for this room but even I didn't think the stars would align for two-and-a-half Benjamins. Score!

The updates in here have been small until now because we normally change one thing at a time like snails, but now we pulled an HGTV and did a bunch of stuff in two days. Know that the usual squealing with glee is happening on my end.
I feel like there should be a choir of angels singing whenever somebody enters the room. So far that hasn't happened so I've been making my own sound effects. Josh Groban and his majestic vocals would also work well for how I'm feeling, but I ASSUME he'd be too busy to hang out and serenade me in my bathroom.
And yesterday I hung the new mirror--which I made a special trip to IKEA to fetch. We were debating whether we should use another, smaller one I found when we got a wild hair and held up the mirror we have in our bedroom. The size was perfect, but the white didn't match the counter top (sometimes IKEA's whites can be a little strange, no?). That was my main reason for picking the gray-brown here, but it also gives a little shout-out to the tile floor and helps tie it in. The floor was starting to feel like the odd man out, so it's nice to give it a buddy.
I hate to say that a room is ever DONE, but this one is looking cute enough that I don't need to worry about it for a while.
I did it! I made pillow covers! Without any thread blobs or WHRRRRR noises!

It had been so long since I'd even tried to use it that I don't remember exactly what I was doing wrong, but a lot of the stuff my mother-in-law told me about the bobbin yesterday was Brand New Information, so I assume it was something down there. BUT NO MORE! We're good to go. This was one of my goals for the year (the machine-using, not the pillows) so I'm happy to get it started. I need to make a few more things this week so the knowledge sticks and then I'll officially cross it off the list.

If you're waiting for me to start the tutorial... There's not one. Yet. If anybody's interested, I can put one together for making the easiest pillow covers in the world, because that's what these are.

High-fives! And let's throw some confetti while we're at it! It's a party up in here today.

Have you been sewing lately? Or conquering an old enemy? What else should I make? And, since it's Friday, what cool things are you up to this weekend?Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-83172438891313683452014-05-14T06:43:00.000-05:002014-05-14T06:43:24.035-05:00Party DownLast week I was poking around at some deck chairs, easing into spring, and now I've gone zero to 60 and feel like having a party out there. It's probably just the warmer weather luring my brain away from all of the other things I want/need to do around the house instead (the trim is almost painted! so close!), but here I am thinking about corn on the cob anyway. So, as one does, I hit Pinterest and found some cute tips for those of you do ARE planning to entertain, maybe for Memorial Day weekend.

>> Post a menu. This one and the next go hand-in-hand, so let's hop down there...

>> Label the food. If you're having a larger get-together with several kinds of grub, it's good to let people know what's what, especially if anybody has allergies. Posting a menu by the entrance can give folks a heads up (since everybody always asks), and then labeling individual items can help if a couple of things are similar.

>> Use a drink bucket. I just like how these look. Coolers are fine and will work just as well, but you have to admit they're not the most attractive things in the world. A galvanized tub is on my list o' things to get for the deck.

>> Have a "make-your-own" area. This is a good way to give guests some variety without putting a ton of work on your shoulders. The picture above is for s'mores, but this idea would also work well for sliders, sundaes, or nachos.

>> Flowers are your friend. Since you're outside anyway, flowers make sense for the decor. I never worry about putting a ton out, but having a couple of pretty things on the table is a nice touch. The vintage-can-as-a-vase is cute and way less fragile than bringing an actual glass object outside.

>> Don't forget some lights. Our neighborhood has a ton of mature trees, so it gets pretty dark in our backyard at night. If your pals are sticking around after the sun goes down, invest in some globe lights
or a lantern. Ain't nobody got time for tripping on the way to the food.

Are you ready for an outdoor shindig? Who wants s'mores? I'm ready to go find a vintage can like that and stick some flowers in it. Maybe there will be some good estate sales this week...
I had every intention of doing it on its usual day, but then I fell into a black hole of Internet and you know how that goes. I had to get some other work done after I startled myself by looking at the clock and this got shuffled to today. But the picks are still fresh!

First, I think we really need to get a tulip table. I keep finding pictures of them and drooling all over myself, so that's a pretty big clue. I enjoy them in different styles of rooms (further evidence that they're the song in my heart) and I think these bentwood chairs look delightful as a little contrast. So... I guess I want a new table AND new chairs.
I've been getting slowly into bracelets. For years I hated them because I was in school or doing a lot of things that required writing on paper, and a bracelet just got in the way more than a watch did. But now that I'm mostly computer-based (or painting something) they're suddenly not a hassle anymore.
My mother-in-law is going to re-teach me all of the bobbin nonsense on my sewing machine this week and FOR REAL this time, I'm not going to forget it. I'm going to use the machine enough that the knowledge sticks. It's like when you learn a new word: use it three times the next day and it's in your vocabulary. I'm going to do the sewing machine equivalent of that. Anyway, I started looking at pincushions since I plan to actually need one now:
So how was your weekend? Ours was jam-packed with friends and family, including a trek to a healthy Mexican restaurant and then hanging out on the deck. (Which still needs more stain, UGH. That's the goal for this weekend, weather permitting.) What's your plan for today? It's a room where some part-timers do client research, so THANKFULLY nobody is in there 40 hours a week because it's the visual equivalent of a womp, womp if I ever saw one.

No windows. Dull colors. Florescent lighting. No windows.

LeAnn's biggest request was to brighten the area and make it feel more welcoming. She already got her boss's approval for an accent wall in Rookwood Red from Sherwin-Williams (which matches some other rooms in the suite), but she wasn't sure how else to tackle the lack of natural light and overall cave feeling.

Girl, I got you. Smiting dark spaces is my favorite thing. Behold my weapons:

>> The wall that's being painted red will obviously be the focal point of the room. I think it would be a fun idea to add a piece of bright abstract art on top it to break up the large chunk of color. The one I found is from artist Michelle Armas, but if her work is over budget LeAnn could always paint something herself. (She's creative! Check out her Etsy shop.)

>> Since the red paint will be bold, I wanted to be careful about adding too many other colors around the room with desk accessories. That's why I chose a mix of metallics instead. They're interesting without being too much, and they'll help bounce light around. I wasn't sure what exactly would be needed, so I picked a magazine/document holder, a letter sorter, a storage box, and a pen cup (originally a candle holder!), all of which are from Target.

>> The desk lamp is metallic, too, though I chose to go with silver for this one to tie in the pencil cup. The key to mixing metallics is to make sure each color appears more than once; that makes everything look intentional.

>> As for the bulletin boards in the hallway, there don't seem to be very many papers on them so I think one can come down and be replaced by some prints LeAnn already found. For the one that remains and the one actually in the office, they can be covered in that gray and white fabric from Spoonflower (which is also available as peel-and-stick wallpaper). Keeping with the mixed metallic theme, I found some simple brass thumb tacks from Amazon. For the prints, plain black frames would look the best.

>> Finally, that space needs some green. Without any natural light I don't think anything will grow, so fake plants it is! Target has realistic looking succulents right now and I found some for the desktops, or some that could be mounted on the wall as shadowboxes.

I can't wait to see how everything looks when it's done! Aaaaah! For the first time ever, I'm so excited at the thought of a red accent wall. They're normally not my jam, but in this space I think it's going to be really cool. LeAnn--I'll be waiting for the after photos.

One teensy smidgen of a problem: we only have two outdoor chairs. Back when the sunroom was there crampin' everybody's style, we only had a little nook for a table, so a little table we bought. But now that we have almost 500 square feet of space to fill (snap!), the old set isn't cutting it.

The jury is out on what to do about a table (there's a pile of leftover lumber in the garage, so maybe we'll attempt to build our own top?) but I definitely know we need some chairs. Chairs are too hard to make yourself unless you're a magician, so we're stuck buying. Since we're looking to get six of them and that will add up in a hurry, I found options under $100 and narrowed from there:

How YOU doin'? I think numbers two and three are my favorites, and I like how they look together, too. The coral-y orange is nice with the wood. From a purely economic standpoint, number five is the winner because he's only $20, but I'm not sure how comfy he'd be for longer periods of time. It'd be harder to add a cushion on a seat like that. The sleek design of number six is really fresh, and if I ever did want to throw a rug or something out there, I could use almost anything. Decisions!

What kind of patio chairs do you have? Anything you got once and would never use again? (I hope you don't say metal!) Which of these is your favorite?Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-10544435163876208962014-05-05T07:49:00.002-05:002014-05-05T08:18:42.812-05:00Assorted House UpdatesThere have been a few small updates happening around here and since none of them are big enough to need a whole post, they're getting turned into a virtual grab-bag today. Let's start the room-hopping on the first floor and see how things have changed.

Two things here. A) I don't think I ever gave you a good look at the sweet trolley car print from my sister. B) Its frame used to be black. This looks 9 million times better.

I used to really hate that floor lamp. It's kind of been an orphan in this new house and it got plopped there on moving day because we had no other use for it. But now that there are a lot of other neutrals in this corner of the room, my urge to set it on fire has gone down. So that's good.

Another update was in the main bathroom. Just look at all of this progress; first I whiten the grout, and then I buy a new bath mat! You can see the old, dark gray one in this post.

I really want to do the countertop next, and then see which pieces of my art hoard would work in here. Among other things, obviously, but I'm still feeling the baby steps for this project so we'll keep it slow.

We also spontaneously got a new duvet cover:

It's this one from West Elm, and the day we wandered into the store it was an additional 20% off the clearance price. Boom! There weren't any shams left, though, but it worked out fine for now since we had some solid white ones hangin' around.

Now that it's on the bed, I realize we REALLY need to paint in here. It's been on the list for a while, but the yellow/beige combination is a little clash-y in person, so that's a kick in the pants. (I'll be painting the picture frames white, too, like their downstairs colleagues.)

For a trip down memory lane, here's how the house looked about a year ago, and here's the mishmash we had going on after living here for two months. The whole point of these kits is to make decorating easy by giving you a place to start. Each one contains fabric samples and paint colors that are designed to mix and match, plus some inspiration images and tips to get you going in the right direction. I wanted something that took away the hassle of choosing colors (and patterns!), but still gave folks the freedom to make the room their own.

Here's the pile of goodies that comes in each one:
As for how they work: you can either buy the fabrics and paints shown in the kits and get your DIY on, or you can take the samples to the store and find existing products in those colors. Or a mix of both! There's really no wrong way to do it.

These first three make up the Bold + Bright Collection, which kind of happened on accident after the weather was horrible for MONTHS. Up next will be a group of neutrals, and then maybe some darker, moodier colors as a change of pace. I also want to let you know that I'm taking on a limited number of custom Room Kits (my favorite thing!). So if you already have an idea about colors or themes, this would be a great next step to get the ball rolling.

I'm so excited! And nervous. But mostly excited! Thanks to everyone who reviewed the prototypes, looked at pictures, suggested other things to include, and just generally supported this crazy new idea of mine. It's hard to put yourself out there like this, especially when you've spent months developing a product, so I appreciate everyone who made it a little less terrifying.

Obviously I'll keep you posted about future designs here, but you can also sign up for the newsletter if you prefer email messages with my smiling face on them. (I'm kidding. I'm too nervous to smile.) A Facebook page is in the works, too.

So there you go! Now you know about The Other Thing I've Been Doing. I hope you enjoy these! Do you have a favorite? Any decorating projects on your radar? Are you extra thrilled by bright colors after that horrific winter, too?

Oh, popcorn. You're the best snack ever! You fit in well with my desire to be healthy without compromising my food-related laziness. And now that I've discovered your secret to even faster preparation, I love you more. (Some of you might be looking at that title and thinking, "Paper in the microwave? That sounds like a FIRE HAZARD." Which is where my brain initially went, too, but this is perfectly safe. Pinky swear.) Paper bag popcorn is tasty and it literally takes 3 minutes, including the time it takes to get everything out of the cupboard.

First, put a handful of unpopped kernels into the bag. I toss in enough to fully cover the bottom and that ends up being enough for both of us.

Next: microwave it. If you have a popcorn button on your machine, you can probably use that. I always do ours for 2 minutes 10 seconds and it comes out perfectly, but yours might be slightly different depending on the wattage.

Now eat it! The kernels will be plain, so you can go the old fashioned melted butter route, make your own caramel, or get crazy like us and drizzle on some Sriracha. (Which I sometimes pretend is blood, depending on what movie we're watching. #nerdforlife)

We've been doing our popcorn this way for over a year, and while I don't think it's groundbreaking, I figured that it's healthy enough to share, and easier than getting one those stovetop poppers. The next time we have a party, I'm putting a big bowl of this on the table.

How do you make your popcorn? Am I the last person in the world to do the paper bag thing? (I hope not.) What's your favorite topping?Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-32762391410451766522014-04-29T06:56:00.000-05:002014-04-29T06:56:14.983-05:00House Tour: Little and Fierce When I was putting together last week's Earth Day post, I ended up on the Tumbleweed Tiny Houses site, poking around all of the designs. If you're not familiar, they're a company that makes building plans and blueprints for, obviously, tiny houses. I think the largest one is around 850 square feet, so they don't mess around. I first heard about them a couple of years ago, but back then they only had renderings and floor plans on the site. Which are fine, I know how to look at those, but I like seeing REAL houses. Even if they're just snooze-y model homes, I like to check out an actual space. (Visual learner, ahoy.)

Anyway, somebody granted my wish and sent in pictures of their GLORIOUS little cottage. I was initially going to share one of the pictures during Pinterest Picks, but then I decided a full-on house tour was in order. All pictures are from this interview via At Home Arkansas.

Don't mind me, I'm just squeaking with glee at my screen. High ceiling. Beams. Natural light. White kitchen. ALL THE THINGS.

Before my brain short-circuits from cuteness, I have to tell you that this adorable slice of heaven is only 557 square feet, but doesn't feel cramped.

My favorite thing about the whole cottage is the normal-sized kitchen. Our old condo was bigger than this (840 square feet), but our kitchen was smaller. Seriously, this place has a lot of storage.

Okay, now that I'm thinking about it, the banquette is also tied for first place. Not only is it a smart way to get more seating in the room, but it's loaded up with pillows to make it a cozy hangout spot that feels more like a couch.

I bring up the whole couch situation because this chair and a half is the only non-table seating. The floor plan is at the end of the post and you'll see there's not a ton of room for anything else, so putting that banquette in the corner was a good fix for the where-will-the-company-sit problem.

You know wallpaper is not my favorite thing, but I actually like it here on the entryway ceiling. I've always wanted to do a row of hooks like that somewhere, too.
This is one of the two(!) bedrooms. That looks like a double bed, but the other one is big enough to fit a queen. (There aren't any pictures of it, tragically. Nor the bathroom.)

The one change this homeowner made was to the loft. Instead of having a big one go all the way across the main living area, she did an enclosed section above the front bedroom for storage and an open area above the kitchen that seems to be a little den. (There weren't any good shots of it, so I'm just spitballing here.) Having that really high ceiling tricks your eyeballs and makes you think the space is bigger.

Living in a house this small obviously won't work for everyone, but I could see it being awesome if you're single or a couple without kids. Heck, I even think a family of three could rock this because the space is used so well.

What do you think? Could you ever downsize into something so little? And what about the decor? I'm digging the white walls and colorful everything else. What other kinds of house tours do you want me to cover? (I almost typed Happy Friends, which would've also worked.) This was a long week, as they usually are post-vacation, and I feel like I haven't quite caught up yet. I probably left town too close to the Room Kit launch--which is Thursday! aaaaah!--but that's okay. It was nice to have a distraction from how nervous I'm getting. I'll have a proper post for you on Launch Day with all of the details, but now it's time for Pinterest Picks. It's a pretty DIY-heavy roundup this time, which I don't think you'll mind.

This is a sewing tutorial, and I'm SURE it's is beyond my skill set even though the girl says it's easy, but I like it enough that I might just dust off the machine and try to make peace. Also, cute tote bag alert!
Do you guys remember when Hubsey was going through his "I don't need a nightstand!" phase? And then I put one of my vintage tables over there anyway and he loved it because his cell phone wasn't on the floor? (His former rationale was that he never had one growing up, so how great could they possibly be?) Well. Now he's SO enamored with his table that he has way too much stuff on it and needs something with storage. We'd like to build a couple of things this spring, so maybe a pair of these are in order:
What are you up to this weekend? We'll be working in the yard, maybe putting the last coat of stain on the deck? It really depends on the weather. We also might try to find Hubsey another suit for work, which always turns into an epic crusade. (Suits to him are like dresses to me. IMPOSSIBLE.) Do you have anything fun planned? Can you believe this is the last weekend in April?!Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-79287390701929995172014-04-24T07:20:00.000-05:002014-04-24T10:10:38.656-05:00Song of the SouthMy sister and I took our annual lady trip last week and headed south of the <strike>border</strike> Mason-Dixon line and into Savannah. I will cut right to the chase here: Savannah is the most beautiful city I've ever seen and I had some MAJOR architecture envy going on. Behold:
So many antiques were jammed in there that you couldn't move around very well (I kind of wonder how they ever get anything out when somebody purchases?) but I was Having A Moment with the house itself anyway. It's the Noble Hardee mansion, which is apparently the last unrestored grand home in the city. As you can see, the walls and ceiling are in rough shape, but you can tell what a beauty it was in its heyday. I hope somebody can get in there to fix it up eventually.

The river was beautiful, too. I didn't know that Savannah was a shipping hub until our first morning there when we saw a freight barge sail through. There were assorted boats cruising along all day, which was fun for somebody who lives 30 miles away from the nearest large body of water--and my sister from land-locked Indianapolis. My favorite meal of the trip was from a place called 22 Square. We honestly chose it because it was raining buckets our last day there and we were just looking for the closest thing. It's inside a hotel and not really advertised outside the building (we found it on Yelp, I think?) so had the weather been nicer we wouldn't have ended up there. It's one of those farm-to-table places, which is a concept you NEED to try if you haven't yet. Here, drool over our cheese and crudite plates:
We spent a lot of time in the car (which, sadly, my back didn't appreciate) which meant we got to see a lot of new geography. Both of us typically fly when we travel, so we've been OVER hills and mountains, but never really driven through them. Illinois is extra boring now. Hills: they make a difference.
Our main destination was Savannah, but we stopped in Nashville for a night on the way down and on the way back. We hit up a couple of honky tonk bars with live music--one played rockabilly and one was more like a night club, but in a good way--and had a face-melting good time. I'd heard that all of the bar musicians would be really good since they're trying to break into the record industry, and it was so true. There was no cover either, so we basically got to go to concerts for the price of our beers.
And then we went to Greece! Just kidding, that's the Parthenon replica in Nashville. It's also a museum, but we didn't have time to pop inside. We'll have to do that when we go back, which we totally are.
So that was our trip! It was my first time really experiencing the South, so it was fun to note the little differences between there and here. Like all of the dress-wearing! All the time, everywhere. (And all of the dudes wore plaid button-down shirts.) Everyone was also extremely polite and well-mannered, which, I will admit, is something we could be better about up here. Not that yankees are RUDE, but a cashier said, "Good morning, how are you?" to us our first day there and we were both surprised. It seemed like she was trying not to laugh at us after that, so at least we're a good for a giggle. Haha.
Have you been to Savannah or Nashville? What did you do/see? Are these places on your travel list? What trips do you have coming up this summer?Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-77132122168879924902014-04-23T06:41:00.002-05:002014-04-23T06:41:53.238-05:00Eco-Friendly Decor Is Your FriendI'm baaaaaaack! And I meant to have this post up yesterday, since that was actually Earth Day, but MAN do things get backlogged when you're out of town for a few days. I'm going through my pictures today and will have a post about the trip for you tomorrow. Spoiler: Savannah is gorgeous.

Anyway, I feel like this post is still fine for today, since there's not really a bad time to think about the environment. I actually wrote something similar last year when I was taking my green design class at school, but I liked it a lot and wanted to do it again. There are a lot of ways to go green when you decorate, so this is far from a comprehensive list, but these are my favorites at the moment. If I missed something you like to do, feel free to share it in the comments.

Buy antique/vintage furniture. Not only is it pretty, but it's hecka sturdy. Back in the day, there wasn't the abundance of cheap-o furniture we have now, which means fewer things were tossed in the landfill after a leg fell off. (You know I love me some IKEA, but let's be real: that stuff isn't intended to last the rest of your life.) Antique furniture is higher quality than most of the stuff made today, so buying it means you probably won't have to replace it. A subset of this is to buy secondhand furniture on Craigslist/at Goodwill/whatevs, but since I just came back from the East coast where the antiques are EPIC and so much older than what we have in Chicago, I'm all googly-eyed about the real thing.

Make it work. Try to do a Tim Gunn on your existing furniture and accessories before you run out and buy something new. The Power of Paint goes a long way, but depending on the specific item you could also change the hardware, recover the seat, or sand and re-stain--which I'm terrible at, but maybe your relationship with stain is better than mine. For extra green points, you can try to use materials you already have around the house.

Be careful with trends. Wallpaper, for example, is a double-edged sword. It can look SO COOL, buuuuut the trouble with going really trendy is that you might not like it in a few years... and will then want to rip it all down and start over. I like the idea of doing a bold area rug instead, because if you do get sick of it, it's way easier to pass on to somebody else than a pile of shredded wallpaper.

source

Downsize. This one is OBVIOUSLY the most extreme and people can't just move at the drop of a hat, but if you ARE in the market for new living quarters, going smaller is a plus for all sorts of reasons. Little homes use less energy (which makes them cheaper to heat and cool!), there's less space to keep clean, and having less storage space means a hoard won't sneak up on you. Not that you need to shack up in a tiny house, but even going 25% smaller will make a difference.

BONUS: Add some indoor plants. This was something I didn't think about until I took my green design class last year, but the indoor air quality in your house might be kind of iffy. Adding a couple of air-purifying plants will help cut down on the VOCs floating around. I need to find one that will be impossible to kill. Too bad cacti weren't on that list...

So what do you do to be green around the house? There are also non-decorating things like composting, recycling, growing a garden without killing all of the vegetables, using natural cleaning supplies... Tons of options! What's on your list? Did you do anything cool for Earth Day?Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-2009962995406818632014-04-16T08:40:00.000-05:002014-04-24T08:41:26.940-05:00The All-Etsy Mother's Day Gift GuideGreetings from the passenger seat of a Prius! My sister and I are on the road to Nashville and Savannah, which means this will be my last post for the week. You can still find me on Instagram, though, sharing up a storm, and I'll be back here on Tuesday with Real Camera pictures and stories.
_______________

I might be a former Etsy seller now (R.I.P. jewelry shops!) but I don't think I'll ever forget how irritating it is when people order last-minute before a holiday. One guy got all up in my business once because he waited until the eleventh hour to order something for his wife's birthday, and then blamed me when first class shipping didn't get it there in time... because he didn't want to upgrade.

Don't be that guy.

I've always liked planning ahead when gifts are involved, so it's not weird to me at all that Mother's Day is still three-and-a-half weeks out and I'm telling you to go shopping. If ol' Crabbypants McJerk had followed the same school of thought, it would've been a better transaction for everybody.

Anyway, I'm not here to dredge up old Etsy stories (though I do enjoy those). Let's see some gift ideas:

I'll own it: some of these are things I kind of want for myself, BUT I figure at last one mom in the world has the same taste as me, so it's fine. I'm going through a big dangly earring phase right now, so I think those are my favorites, followed by the acrylic tray. What about you? And what are you thinking about for your mom this year? Anybody have their gifts already?Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-14170982996595061862014-04-14T07:16:00.001-05:002014-04-14T14:56:02.846-05:00DIY Washi Tape MagnetsI was in the dining room a few weeks ago, taking this picture of my washi tape collection for Instagram, and Hubsey was like, "Oh, you bought more! What's the plan for this?"

And I was all, "Uh..." My little washi tape buying spree happened because I got distracted by how cute the patterns were and not so much enticed by the idea of using it, but obviously, I SHOULD use adorable craft supplies if I have them. So here's the plan! (Part 1 of many, because now I have 7 rolls to use. Ahem.)

Like I mentioned last week, after I do a big project I'm only interested in easy stuff for a while. You really only need, like, 5% of your brain for this one, so feel free to do it while you catch up on Mad Men. (Did you watch last night? I grow tired of Don and his self-sabotage.) You probably have most of this stuff at home already, except maybe the magnets which you can get at JoAnn or Michaels:

>> washi tape
>> round magnets
>> white paint
>> paint brush
>> scissors (not pictured)
>> a heavy book (not pictured)

First I painted the tops of the magnets white. This step might not be necessary depending on what patterns you have on your tape, but since all of mine have white on them, I've found that they show up best on a white background. So I did that, and when they were dry I started taping.

My magnets were slightly wider than my tape, so I had to use two strips and line up the edges. It wasn't as tricky as I feared it would be, and in person the seam isn't noticeable. I pressed down really well and then snipped off the excess with my scissors.

To be extra sure the tape wasn't going anywhere, I had the magnets sit under a heavy book for a few hours. Then I tossed them up on the fridge and they were adorable!

Sorry about the weird angle, the window is behind me and we all know how helpful that is.

They are pretty small, but because I used the thicker magnets, they're strong. If you aren't the type to stick a lot of papers to the front of your fridge, using the thinner version would be totally fine.

Now I need to think of other tape-related ideas! This stuff is so ridiculously easy to work with I wish I'd jumped on the bandwagon a couple of years ago with everybody else. Whoops. But I guess the upside is that I don't have a giant collection to store, so there we go.

What have you been making lately? Anything with washi tape? Have you ever bought crafty materials without having a plan first? Sometimes they just know your siren song and you can't help yourself. I'm heading into another busy weekend, between packing for my road trip, wrangling the wilderness outside of our house that we call a yard, and working ahead on some Room Kit stuff since I'm going to be gone for almost 6 days. Hopefully my printer and laptop are done giving each other the silent treatment so I can get some of the information onto real paper.

Anyway! I left you hanging without any Pinterest picks last week (my bad) and I wasn't about to do that again. Let's see what the internet dazzled me with this time:

Time to play What Do I Like About This Office, brought to you by the show house that Young House Love just finished. Can I get a what-what for the rug? And a high five for putting a real chair in there, since we all want a comfy bum? Also the requisite comments about all of the natural light that I make about everything, blah, blah, blah. I'd like to move in.
So what are you up to this weekend? Anybody else venturing outside to reclaim the land? Or trying to be a printer whisperer?Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-44283269988758164832014-04-09T06:59:00.002-05:002014-04-09T07:00:05.520-05:00DIY Roundup: Get Your Spring OnNow that the weather is done being ridiculous, I have ants in my pants to start more DIY projects. Something kind of small, since I did just paint another room. (Are you like that, too? After a bigger project you're only interested in easy stuff?) I have something up my sleeve already that involves a can of spray paint--whee!--but it never hurts to have other ideas floating around. Here are some tutorials that have caught my eye lately.

>> Conversation coasters. I actually tried to make a version of these as trivets before I knew this tutorial existed, and I learned the hard way, as one often does, that not all kinds of cork will play nice if you try to paint them. Getting the thin, smooth variety is important. Depending on what you wrote on them, these could be fun icebreakers for a party.

>> Succulent teacup. High-five for plants that are hard to kill! Plus, I love anything in a teacup. (This puppy is in a teacup.)

>> Gold vase. Two of my favorite things come together in this project: spray paint and things that are shiny. If you click through to the tutorial, the girl who made this did several other designs, too.

>> Bright chairs. I like the idea of putting some color outside after such a craptastic winter. These would look great indoors, too; maybe in a breakfast nook or play room?

>> Build-a-planter. If you're itching to bust out your tools, this planter is fairly easy to make and will make you feel way better about your dreary, post-snow yard. And if your flowers aren't growing yet, this would be a great place to stick some fake ones.

>> Gallery wall. Don't you just feel happy looking at this? Art is my favorite way to shake up the feeling in a room, so now's the time to switch things around if you're ready for a change. And if you're like me and SOMEHOW ended up with a hoard of artwork in your office, throw the confetti because you're about to update your space without spending any more money. Boo ya. Economic master in da house.

Are you itching to start making things, too? Or maybe you already started? What's on your list?Paige @ Little Nostalgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11978050087934003216noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3374776362042971476.post-7082025625387016412014-04-07T06:44:00.000-05:002014-04-07T06:44:21.263-05:00Painting the KitchenOne of my goals for the year is to get some lighter paint on the walls of our main living areas. Our house is rocking some tiny windows (which is pretty typical of things built in 1970) and combined with the seven mature trees on our lot, it's a cave in here. Now that we've gotten our biggest projects out of the way--which were the basement, the leaky sunroom, and the cabinets--it's time to do something about these inherited paint colors. They're not hideous or anything, and maybe the previous owners wanted to embrace the darkness and be cozy, but I like things brighter.

So! Last week I busted out the same paint I used on the cabinets (Benjamin Moore Advance) and I went to town on the chair rail and bulkhead:

Imagine me squealing a little bit while I type. I made Hubsey look at all of the pictures I took, even though he lives in the house and can see this with his own eyeballs. I'm becoming That Parent who won't stop sharing pictures of their kids, except instead of kids it's my house. Anyway, I went with the Advance again because there was a bit left and I wanted to use it, but I also wanted everything to match the rest of the white trim. There are already enough neutrals going on down here, so keeping the whites consistent was the best move.

Let's look at some before and afters! Whee!

It's SO MUCH BRIGHTER. And without that dark brown on the bulkhead, the ceiling feels two feet higher in the cooking area. Behold:

We're thrilled with how it's coming together. For a while the basement has been the only spot in the house that feels 100% us, but now the kitchen is catching up. It's been extremely affordable to this point, too, because all we've done is paint the cabinets/chair rail/bulkhead, buy a rug, and switch the picture frames. We've only spent about $200, which is crazy because it looked like this the day we moved in:

I remember unpacking this room in the middle of the afternoon, and you can see how all of the brown just sucked the light right out of there. I'm so glad we painted those cabinets. (And everything else. Ha.)

Let's end on an after picture! You're lookin' mighty fine, kitchen. Mighty fine. Insert a saucy wink here.

Let me break it down for you. There's a TON of natural light (#jealous), a big table that's equally great for spreading out to work on a project or holding a meeting, and the old pull-down map is something I've wanted in my house forever. Oh! And the high ceilings. And the rug. Basically everything about it is wonderful. I bet if we looked out that window we'd see unicorns prancing around as gumdrops fell from the sky. IT'S PERFECT.

Ahem. Since I tragically don't have the space in my house for this yet, I thought I'd do an affordable style board in the hopes that somebody else can recreate it in the meantime.

>> Obviously we have to start with the table. I chose something slightly smaller in the spirit of practicality, but know that you can always go bigger if you need to. This version will only set you back $168, which is pretty sweet. The black chair is from Crate & Barrel (it's dreamy in person) is $149, and the green Eames knockoffs are $111 each.

>> The tribal rug makes my heart sing. It's available in various sizes, but I picked a 5'x8' assuming that most folks will be dealing with a small-ish space. Its regular price is $294 from RugsUSA, but they have sales on a regular basis so you could easily get it for less.

>> Let's talk about some accessories! The pendant is my biggest splurge here at $460, but since the main furniture is so affordable I felt fine about spending a little extra coin. Treat yo'self! On the other end of the spectrum, the little blue shelf is only $14 (from Etsy!) and the world map poster is an easy $24.

>> I almost forgot about the little sheepskin. I'm personally not a fan of the drape-them-on-everything trend, but I know a lot of people are. This one is only $10 from IKEA, so even if you try it and hate it you're only down a Hamilton.

All told, you can get this whole look for about $1,400, slightly more if you decide to go whole hog with 5 chairs.

I love it. So much. I want to take it aside and whisper sweet nothings into its ear. If I had the means to do ANYTHING to my workspace, it would turn into this. What about you? What's your dream office like? Are you a fan of this room? Let's play the what's-your-favorite-thing game: mine is probably the ceiling height, but if we're talking about stuff to buy then I'm going with the green chairs.
