Miscellaneous: You want me to pay WHAT?

I was at my favorite antique mall yesterday and I came across this cute table:

First of all, it goes with the condo's color scheme so I wouldn't even have to paint it.  And it would work either as a nightstand, or in our teeny kitchen as a more structured recycling area.

So I'm all excited, thinking I'm about to get a great deal... and then my joy comes to a screeching halt:

WHAT!

Riddle me this, you guys: Why are some things inexplicably overpriced?  That table is small.  It's short, and while it's hard to judge scale in a picture, it's not big in any sense of the word.  Yeah, it's really old, but it's just a re-painted side table!  Right?  It's possible that there's a gap in my antique furniture knowledge, but I'm pretty sure this is ridiculous.

Have you come across anything hideously overpriced lately?  Something you really wanted?  It's a bummer, isn't it?  What did you do?

  2. Seriously! I was thinking it would be around $50, since somebody took the time to paint it. But for $175 it better have a diamond hidden in the drawer or something.

  3. if it really is walnut, that is pretty rare and expensive wood. nice wood! heh. but sometimes just 'old' makes people think 'valuable' and they probably can find some designer who can get a sucker to buy it because it's shabby...

  5. That's too bad, the color is gorgeous... And yeah, it's not worth it, especially since they repainted it. Repainting old things like furniture actually hurts the price

  6. Oh really? I didn't know repainting was bad for the value. It makes sense, though.

  7. That's just silly... go find yourself a cheap (or free) little table at a thrift store or on Craigslist and whip out some spray paint! And yes, makes no difference how old it is, since they repainted it, it's just a repainted old side table... no matter how cute it is!

  8. It's frustrating--bet you can find something similar for much less. Beautiful color!

  9. You put "Antique" in the title and the price goes up 300% - happens every time I find something I like too.
