This is why I don't write a food blog.

Don't these look tasty?

I made them! Well, not those in the picture. In fact, mine turned out nothing like that, but I gave it the ol' college try.

The recipe was found on Pinterest, and I saw that fellow blogger Kristen had the same recipe pinned to her delicious food board as well. We had a handful of the same dishes tagged, so I thought, "Hey! Let's each make something and then write about it!"

I'll tell you now: famous last words.

I decided to make the Mozzarella Sticks for Dummies pictured above.  Just an egg roll wrapper around some string cheese, either deep fried or baked. (Get the full recipe and instructions here.) But then I decided that since I generally like a higher bread-to-cheese ratio, I'd better get something a little heartier than egg roll wrappers.

Cue the foreboding music.

I followed the same instructions: roll up the cheese, pinch the edges shut, bake. And then I took them out of the oven 14 minutes later, ready to scarf them down with some leftover marinara sauce.

They were disgusting. Like, so gross that I couldn't even swallow the bite in my mouth. I spit it back into my hand like a child and threw it away. Imagine mozzarella cheese with butter and you'll know the taste.

Obviously, I have learned to follow the recipe. (You would think I already knew that thanks to all of my Food Network watching, but alas.) I haven't popped over to see how Kristen's food turned out, but I can only imagine it's better than mine.

Have you had any recent culinary goofs? Tried a delicious new recipe? Anybody ever NOT followed the recipe and had good results?

  1. Oh my gosh, this cracked me up! I can just imagine how they turned out, though it seems like in theory it would taste pretty good. Mine were good, though I did have to make a few tweaks to the recipe (who really has a bread machine??). I would make them again. I think a linky party would be fun- there's so much stuff pinned out there!

  2. Hi Paige,

so sorry your recipe didn't work out but at least you tried!!! I wonder if Filo pastry instead of the egg roll wrapper would work?

  3. I can't imagine anything with mozzerella cheese tasting bad but I'll take your word for it. I usually don't follow recipes too strictly. It's more of a guideline and I'll tweak the seasoning for something. Salt & Pepper is not enough for me. :)

  4. I tried to make chocolate cake from scratch and it was gross.. not enough sugar.

  5. Maybe you could try it again with pizza dough. You'd get more of the bread that you're after, but it wouldn't be so puffy and buttery tasting.

  6. I would try it with chunks of brie cheese and some pear slices or apple wrapped into the croissant instead (maybe a little brown sugar too!) - sort of a "brie en croute" but not.

Also agree with the pizza dough idea Lori recommended, although I might also recommend making sure you pick up string cheese that doesn't have too many additives since that can also affect melting and the post-melt flavor.

Don't let it discourage you from using recipes as inspiration though! Sometimes it won't work out, but I've still ended up with more amazing results from deviating and going my own direction.

  7. I'm so glad I'm not alone in the kitchen "mistake" area :)
Last week alone I caught the oven on fire and forgot to take the cardboard off the frozen pizza! Yes, I can even mess up frozen pizza!!!

  8. Ha ha! I love that you posted the mistakes--I had a similar disaster when I tried to recreate a Cake Boss pastry and I blogged the whole thing. It was the worst thing I've ever tasted!

  10. hahaha! oh no!! At least it made for a hilarious blog post. I'm a terrible cook/baker so I don't even try new recipes anymore. Last thing I made was my mom's birthday cake and I dropped it on the floor. I took that as a sign that it was probably disgusting anyway.

  12. I so agree! If I tried doing a food blog, I'd just eat it all without ever really getting the after pictures up. Loved your yellow dress rework, BTW! =)

  13. Better luck next time!

I always doubt a recipe and try to add something from my experience and they usually turn out great the first time. Then on the second, when I am sure in myself I screw up :)))

  14. Better luck next time;) I haven't ever made anything that was not good enough to eat but my husband will tell me this isn't going to make the "list".

  15. Bummer your Mozzarella sticks did not work out, better luck next time.

I love to make homemade soup and I use recipes for ideas but never follow them exactly.

  16. Oh my gosh, so hungry now!!! I love mozza sticks, but rarely do I let myself indulge. Mostly because I would eat the whole box in one sitting.
