Tutorial: No-Sew Dress

The other day I mentioned having a new project that I needed to hurry up and finish.

It looks like a blouse hanging there, but it's actually a dress. I'm not in the habit of putting unflattering pictures of myself on the interwebs, but I'll do it now because you need to see what I was dealing with:

Why yes, I AM going to the Dynasty convention! How did you know!? Let me just get my white pumps and I'll meet you outside.

Thankfully, it doesn't look like that anymore:

Much better!

As promised, here are the full instructions for getting from Point A to Point B--and you don't need your sewing maching. At all.

First, I measured the new sleeve length and chopped off the rest. Huge improvement already, right?

I didn't hem the sleeves because the cowl neckline isn't hemmed, and I felt like two edges so close together should have the same finish. If you do need to hem (is that even the right sewing term for a sleeve?), measure an extra half-inch and fold it under with some Liquid Stitch.

Next, I tackled the too-long skirt. Using a tape measure and a basic No. 2 pencil, I marked where to cut.

My advice for this part: go slow. I don't know what kind of fabric this is, but it was temperamental and did NOT like it when I tried to zip along with the scissors. If you want a nice, clean edge (without having to re-do it), then take your time.

After it was the correct length, I busted out the Liquid Stitch to close the slit on the left side. You may not need to do this, but the bottom of my slip poked out when it was open.

Again, if you need to hem the bottom, leave a little wiggle room for Liquid Stitch to make a reappearance. Like all of the other edges, I left mine unfinished for now.

Finally, try it on and feel proud that you managed to fix it without your evil sewing machine squashing all of your fun.

Welcome to 2011, yellow dress. It's nice to have you.

Have you been doing any clothing revamps this summer? Anybody know why my sewing machine would go WHRRRRRR and then make a thread blob? Who else has joined the Liquid Stitch club? Feel free to link your projects in the comments; I've love to see what you've been up to.

  1. That came out great! The original was straight-up Mad Men but without the coolness. I haven't tried Liquid Stitch but I am a big fan of Stitch Witchery iron-on tape for pant hems. You might like to get a rotary cutter so you're not fighting with scissors. They are so easy to cut fabric with!

  2. Love the end product! Cute color too! It's possible that your tension is set too low on the sewing machine. If it is, sometimes it lets too much thread out at one time causing a thread blob. If it's too high, it scrunches the fabric up while sewing.

  3. LOVE the transformation! I've seen so many great revamp projects blogs lately - When I switch back over to my fall clothes (which hopefully I have t least 6 more weekends of summer here in Boston!) I'm going to do a handmade update. So much cheaper then buying new clothes

  4. Just lovely! I haven't used the liquid stich before but it sounds wonderful. My sewing machine is stuck in reverse right now! I just hate when that happens. I usually leave it alone for a few days and it goes back to normal, but it is so weird when it happens.

  5. Thanks, everybody!

Heidi, I hadn't thought about the tension setting! Not that I know what I'm doing anyway, but I can ask my sister to walk me through it. :-) Thanks for the tip.

  9. I love it! And I just might be able to manage a straight line of adhesive. Cross your fingers that I don't glue myself into something ;) Lovely wavy hair, btw.

  12. I love this! Yellow is such a great color :) I am trying to revamp one of my dresses by turning it into a skirt. I love the pattern, but the top has this funky lacy that does not look nice on me. Hopefully, I can find a no-sew solution to that, or just learn how to use my sewing machine better, haha :)

  13. Now that is lovely dress, so appropriate for the summer! And great revamping project :)) I haven't played with my clothes this summer but I enjoy all advice and some day I will just use it.

  14. Cracked up over the Dynasty convention monologue intro.

Usually when I do something to an outfit it's to make it LESS appropriate for work, hehe. Case in point: I turned a long T-shirt into a fairy tunic by handsewing on the frou-frou bodice of a vintage nightie, some vaguely leaf-shaped cutouts from a sheer curtain, and ruffles from a child's skirt:

I'm too afraid to try the sewing machine, and I distrust Liquid Stitch's strength in the wash (I tend to go heavy with embellishments).

I appreciated your visit and comment on my blog, by the way!

  15. Wow-this is so cute! I love it! I have never tried Liquid Stitch either.

I have to say, the dress didn't look that great beforehand but you were still rocking it! I would definitely not say that it's an unflattering picture of you!
