What I Wore: Business Time

One thing I've found difficult about working in a creative field (the jewelry, not The Day Job) is dressing myself. Most days it doesn't really matter how I look because I'm at my house or the post office, but every once in a great while, I need to seem like a business owner. And that's where it gets tricky: I have to look professional, but not stuffy. Creative, but not weird. And I definitely need to look like I designed the jewelry I'm trying to sell.

I met with a boutique owner recently, and this is how I ended up putting myself together:

cardigan: H&M
shirt: Target
jeans: F21
boots: Target
necklace and bracelet: I made them

The skinny jeans and boots are trendy, but the sweater and striped shirt kept things on the classic side to go with the product. Ideally I'll have a blazer for these business-y situations in the future, but I'm having a heck of a time finding one that fits my manly shoulders AND twiggy child arms. So we'll see. It might be cardigans by default.

Anybody else have trouble dressing for creative business? Or any business? Do you have a go-to outfit?

  1. I love the look of blazers. Just not on me. At all. I don't know what it is, but they just look funny, so I am a cardigan girl, too. They are classic and clean but not too stuffy. Looks like you made a good choice!

  3. I love cardigans and I think this outfit is cute with the cardigan. The blazer would be a nice touch also, but the cardigan works for business too. I wish I had a go to outfit, but I don't and I wear a cardigan with most of my outfits.

  4. Kristen, I hear ya about blazers looking funny. Finding one that looks good is like tracking down the Holy Grail.

Valerie, if you wear cardigans a lot, I think you're halfway there. A cardigan even dresses up a t-shirt. :-)

  7. Cute outfit! I have been having a terrible time finding cute things to wear, especially since the weather is so bipolar where I am. I need to learn to accessorize (:

  13. In Japan EVERY woman has a black skirtsuit with ugly midheels for business occasions. I don't own a suit, so I make up for it by wearing something tailored while I save my money for one of Laura Galic's jackets (she's on Etsy under lauragalic). Then I will wear that and skinny jeans and heels all the live long day.
