A Day of Love

Everyone, this is my sewing machine.

Normally, we don't get along. It likes to make elaborate thread knots and WHRRRRR noises at me when all I'm trying to do is sew up a hem. It's been a little rude.

But that was before. Before I finally remembered to ask my mother-in-law for help when she was here. And you know what? It took her about 3 seconds to find the problem. My many hours of yelling and threatening disembowelment were a waste, because apparently that's not how you fix "bobbin tension problems."

Bobbin tension?! I didn't even know that was a THING. I thought you just stuck it in there and poof! It would know what to do.

Clearly, I've been giving machines too much credit.

My constant foe!

So, yes, there are all sorts of thread tensions that need to be correct for actual sewing to happen. Now I know.

As soon as I got it working, I whipped up a little something I promised Hubsey about six months ago. He's been hanging onto the t-shirt he wore on our first date, even though it's falling apart and sporting some impressive stains. He wanted me to make it into something he could keep, so I did:

I'm not the only one who thinks the picture is funny, right?

Awwww. Even though I didn't intend to get him anything for Valentine's Day, I accidentally did anyway.

As for the sewing machine, I wouldn't say we're best friends, but we've buried the hatchet. At least for now. I do have to put more thread on the bobbin before I use it again, so we'll see how that goes...

Before I go, be sure you check out Marilyn's sweet giveaway over at Pulp Sushi! You can win these earrings from my shop, along with a handful of other fabulous things.

So, what are your plans on this Day O' Love? Anybody else reconcile with their sewing machine? Or make a sentimental pillow? Don't forget to enter that giveaway!

My plans for today...I'll probably go and help out in my kindergartener's classroom.

  2. Hooray for conquering the machine (for now)! That pillow came out great and was a great use for the t-shirt, which yes, is hilarious.

  3. Ugh...I'm with you! I never quite 'get' the tension thing. People SAY that you shouldn't ever have to change it, but for some reason mine always moves on me. I think it knows I hate it and hates me back. I've started a sewing 101 project for myself, following the instruction book 1-2-3 Sew, so I'm hoping that will improve my basic skills!

  4. Haha I'm glad that Nancy left you a comment, too. She and I have been sharing sewing machine war stories lately. I have had some trouble figuring out the correct tension to use for sewing paper, but I'm at a place where I'm not fighting with my machine anymore at least.

The pillow is sweet. I agree that the picture is funny! Have a great Valentine's Day with your husband. Jake and I are going out for dinner tonight.

  5. What a cute gift for your hubby!
I think bobbin tension is the most frustrating part of sewing with a sewing machine

  6. I learned the bobbin tension thing the hard way too. Except I didn't have anyone to show me how to fix it... I had to read the whole flipping instruction manual. Oh and I'm going to have to say that shirt is pretty provocative if you ask me haha nice first date shirt.

  7. You guys made me feel SO much better about the stupid bobbin. It's such a "duh" moment, but I'm glad I'm not alone. :-)

  8. Sewing machines look so friendly, but they are complex little creatures. I love what you did with your huband's t-shirt. What a great way to preserve it!

  9. Do you think your sewing machine can have a chat with my sewing machine so we can make up too :) We get in a fight every time we see each other! I'm giving it the silent treatment right now...LOL :)
