A Vast Improvement

Our most wonkus room in the house is the family room. It has furniture that doesn't fit, or match, or is actually a cooler we're using to hold the X-Box. There's a lot of snazzy 90's oak and a mishmash of yellow-y tan colors on every surface.

But not for long! Step One: Get New Furniture is officially underway. This pretty young thang arrived on Friday morning:

Ah, my beautiful new couch! We ordered it from Macy's over a month ago, but it was on sale and SO perfect for what we want to do in here that it was well worth the wait. The fabric is actually a gray tweed with some light brown strands woven through it, so it's a best-of-both-worlds neutral.

We didn't just get a new couch, we also scored an amazing deal on a side chair:

Hubsey and I have been eyeballing a particular Eames chair since we found out we were moving. Sadly, the real deal is $495, which I would only pay if it came with a little baggie diamonds. (It does not.) So when my friend Chris told me about an outlet selling something nearly identical, I was all over it. Guess how much this was? Just guess. Go on.

$55.

I KNOW. I ended up at the store on a total whim, and it's lucky I went because I bought the very last one. They won't be re-stocked until October. Whew!

So with these new pieces we're making a lot of progress. We're not out of the woods yet, but getting the large furniture taken care of is a relief. It's feeling less like a storage locker down here and more like an actual room. What's left to do? I'm glad you asked:

We'll put the projector wires up through the ceiling (there's already a pipe for that), paint the pole, trim, and built-in shelving white, make an upholstered coffee table that actually fits the space, and eventually hang something on the walls.

And Mom, because I know you're wondering about that chair, here's a picture for scale. It's normal-sized and comfortable.

Have you had any happy furniture adventures lately? Or switched things up for a new space? Maybe you wanted something expensive but lucked out finding a knock-off?

  1. I love the little pops of color that the pillows and chair add! Painting the pole and trim will really brighten things up too! This room is coming together very nicely!

  2. That Couch and Chair are awesome! Nice finds! We're unfortunately still putting rugs and couch/chair purchases on the back burner. Instead we just finally recovered from my sister's wedding (thank goodness) and we bought lumber to build ourselves a railing for the front steps. There are 7 steps out there an no railing - so our due date is Halloween to be safe for trick or treaters

No big furniture purchases for us, but I think I need a couple more shelves put up in my studio :)

  5. Ooooh...that $55 chair is uber-great! I want one too!! Darn living in Canada...the shipping on this stuff is often four times what the item costs!

I'm definitely trying to re-imagine our living space at the moment. It also revolves around a tweedy-grey couch, which lives only in my imagination at the moment...

  8. Everything looks great! I love your new sofa. It's a great color and nice size for lounging. What a great price on your chair, lucky you. I recently scored 4 dining room chairs that were the perfect color match to my table at the ReStore. They were $25 each, and they are extremely well made and look great. I love it when you find those great deals. Enjoy your new space.
