Halloween Costume Predictions

Costumes are one of my favorite things ever. I always, ALWAYS dress up for Halloween and have thought about throwing a costume party for some other occasion. (Maybe when Downton Abbey comes back?) I've been putting the finishing touches on my Rachel Zoe getup, which is looking pretty dope, by the way, but thought I should talk about some ideas that might be more popular this year for those of you who want something of-the-moment. In no particular order, here are my official predictions for most popular costumes of 2013:

Miley

>> Miley Cyrus. There are so many options for doing a Miley this year, but I had to go with her VMAs performance. The twerking, the foam finger, the little buns on her head that looked like horns... The costume makes itself. But please don't wear a nude bathing suit. It would be an impressive level of commitment, but a bathing suit isn't clothes, y'all. Especially not at the end of October when you need layers to thwart hypothermia.

Breaking Bad

>> Walter White/Heisenberg (or anybody from Breaking Bad). The costume above is Walt, but there are so many great characters from the show to choose from: Jesse, Hank, Skyler, face-melted Gus--I think this will be the number one group costume of the year. Don't forget to carry around a little baggie of raspberry flavored rock candy.

The Roaring 20s

>> Flapper. The latest movie version of The Great Gatsby came out a few months ago, and Downton Abbey is still popular even if we don't get new episodes stateside until January. Flappers in general have always been a Halloween mainstay, but I think more ladies than usual will be rocking the beaded skirts and long necklaces this year. Extra high-fives if you try to replicate a specific Downton costume.

Honorable Mentions:

>> Game of Thrones. Weirdly, I haven't seen this show yet (it's on my list!) but I know it's crazy popular and therefore another good contender for the always tricky group costume. Individually, I think Daenerys Targaryen and her dragon-hatching badassery will be seen the most.

>> A Fox.  Have you seen the music video? If not, prepare to have that song in your head all day. Foxes are the new owls.

So, what are you wearing this year? What else do you think will be popular? Do you go for the topical costumes or do you like something more niche?

  1. I haven't even thought about what I'll be wearing this year. I don't know if I'll be doing anything. My friend has been thinking about dressing up as Miley Cyrus... but we haven't discussed if we are going out dressed up as something.

  2. I haven't dressed up for the last few years. I always have great intentions to, but then it comes down to the last minute and I still don't have a costume. We end up sitting on our stoop, drinking beer, and passing out candy anyway.

  3. I love Halloween and your costume ideas are fabulous. The roaring 20s selections are stunning, I'd love to attend a Downton Abby viewing party in that costume.
    Cheers!

  5. Totally agree with your predictions. Especially Breaking Bad, aka the best show EVER. This is actually the first year I'm not dressing up in years. I just feel way too pregnant and physically uncomfortable to be into it. I did by a skeleton skirt with a skeleton baby on the belly from Etsy, so I guess that sort of counts? I'm still going out (up to Milwaukee to see my husband's band) so it will be fun to see everyone else dressed up.

  7. We probably won't dress up this year, but I do love a good Halloween party though! I love that you threw Heisenberg and those blue salts into this mix... too funny!

  11. I, sadly, have absolutely no Halloween plans! Except maybe congratulating myself...it will be the first day I hand one of my classes back over to my cooperating teacher! My mom recently dressed up in Downton Abbey style clothes for a costume party and loved it!

  12. The Miley cracked me up. We don't dress up but our children certainly do, and while we still have control over Greta's costume (ballerina), Gus is not on his own, and he wants to be an excavator. I usually handle costume prep but I'm going to have to bring in the big guns (husband) on this one.

Rachel Zoe will be fun. You can do your duck face!
