But! Like I said, I'm one of the few. Most people I know enjoy it and since it's going to be creeping up on us in a few weeks, I thought I'd share some fun gift ideas I found on Etsy. There's nothing wrong with going the traditional flowers-and-candy route, but if you wanted something a little fresher, I found some non-traditional goodies that would be a nice change of pace:

My favorite in the "practical" group is the ring holder. I like having a spot to put mine when I'm doing the dishes or otherwise getting my hands gunky. The earrings and glitter garland are festive but not holiday-specific, so I like that you could use them for a lot of other things. And you know I love a good throw pillow. It wouldn't really feel like a post from me if I didn't show you one.

I rounded up a few things for Team Pink, too. These aren't just any old flowers, they're PAPER! Horticulturally-challenged people unite! I've been wearing a lot of scarves and gold necklaces lately, so I can personally recommend both things as gifts. And hello there, lace bag. You're looking pretty today.

You know what? I like the idea of blue and turquoise working their way into the V-Day picture. Kind of like how pretty much any color is acceptable for Christmas decor these days, I'm a fan of branching out for other holidays, too. Turquoise and red has been a favorite color combination of mine for a while, and I'm happy to see it reppin' the love department this year. (I also want one of those hand-painted hearts to hang in my kitchen, pronto.)
What do you like to give (or get) for Valentine's Day? Do you go the candy-and-flowers route, or do you like to try something different? What's your favorite thing here?
I don't think we usually give gifts on Valentine's Day. Although Ryan typically gives me flowers and we'll go out for dinner. That probably won't happen this year since he's at Duke. I like the non-traditional colors for V-day. I actually did my post today on purple gift ideas.
ReplyDeleteWe don't usually do much for Valentine's Day either....maybe breakfast out or something casual. But I love that all these gift ideas are great for all year long. Those paper flowers would look awesome in my new studio...I think I need to email them to Jesse :)

It's probably sort of funny that I am admitting that when I rely on the season so much for income with all of the Valentine's Day cards! :-P We usually don't do gifts, but Andrew will get me flowers and chocolate and we might do something fun for the occasion out on the town that isn't necessarily dinner. I'm definitely one of those that tends to think it's weird that many only show their significant others love and appreciation just one day out of the year.

ReplyDeleteAnd we've talked about it before, but I think Valentine's Day is just about showing a little love to all the people in your life who you care about. Peter and I have been together as long as the sun and the moon, so we rarely make a big event out of it. But I have totally made Valentines for friends in the past, roommates, and of course my nephews and niece. My parents still send Valentines to me and Peter! Haha. I think people who view it as just a "couples only" holiday lack imagination. And you're right that people are willing to sort of tailor other holidays to fit their life and tastes, i.e., non-traditional colors at Christmas or people of all faiths having Christmas trees and "Santa," so why not make Valentine's Day what you want also?
Mike and I just exchange cards. No gifts or anything like that. Most of the time we don't even like to dine out that night because EVERYONE goes out that night and we dine out pretty regularly anyway. Any excuse to eat cake and candy though! :)
ReplyDeleteWe do always have tons of candy around, because that's what I sell, but we're more a cards-and-extra-consideration couple. But showing extra love and kindness to everyone is a good approach!

ReplyDeleteValentine's Day-- hubby is sentimental and into cards. He may get me chocolates (which I will share with him out of the kindness of my heart!).
I make cards for other people as well sometimes.
