The HGTV Dream Home is back (in Lake Tahoe!) so let's take a gander, shall we? I'm interested to know how you guys feel about this one compared to last year's. Spoiler: I like this one more. Double-spoiler: there's less color!
Before we jump in, I have to make a note about the pictures: I think they could've been better. It seems like they did the whole photo shoot later in the day and didn't think about how the lack of light would impact certain rooms. It's kind of a bummer, but we'll get through it.
First, let's take a look at the exterior. In this case, the pictures at dusk totally work because you want to show off those purdy windows. Hubba.
Again, the WINDOWS. This would be heaven for cats that like to nap in a puddle of sunshine. And humans, too, I suppose.
This is the living room. (See what I mean about the pictures being kind of dark?) I'm drooling over the combination of warm wood and black trim. That's probably my favorite thing about the whole house, and they use it a lot. High-five.
The kitchen is next, which I like but don't love. It feels a little lopsided thanks to that giant fridge/cabinet combination. I am a fan of the waterfall countertop, though, and I think it's cool that they put wingback chairs at the ends of the dining room table (you can see one back on the right).
Here's a longer shot of the living room, kitchen, and dining room. I really dig the totally open concept floor plan. Not that we have huge parties all the time or anything, but with a house like this, I'd probably have more people over. One minor nitpick here: I hate the giant cross-section of wood as "artwork" above the fireplace. We get it, we're in nature.
This is the foyer. Some people might be kind of bummed about the overall lack of color in this house, but I think it's way more appealing. It's easy to bring in visual interest with different textures and I'm excited to see that in play here.
Now we're in the master bedroom. I hate to keep harping on the pictures, but here's another room that would've looked better in full sunlight. Maybe they want us to get sleepy? At least the pillows on the bed make me smile. The chandelier is nice, too.
Kid HQ! This is really fun, especially that bold rug. I do kind of wonder why they always put bunk beds in these houses. Did they make a bad deal with a mobster bunk bed supplier once and this is how they have to pay their debt? I bet that's it.
Jumping back to the master for a second, this is beautiful. It's that classic dark and light contrast that's so timeless for a bathroom. I like how they kept the modern feeling of the rest of the house with the large hardware and trendy light fixtures.
And finally, we land in the family room. Again, I like the beams... and that's it. No! See that plaid chair near the door? I like that plaid. I would put that in my basement TODAY.
So there we go, the HGTV Dream Home 2014. What do you think? How do you feel about all of those wood beams? Do you also wonder about the bunk bed conspiracy? (Because seriously.) Are you a bigger fan of this one than last year's?
I really love the wood beams and if we could manage to swing that in some house one day, I would love that. I love the upscale-country cabin feel. That being said, the kitchen is super disappointing. It's like, in the middle of the floorplan and kind of wonky being perpendicular to the living room. Like, if you're cooking, don't you want to face the action going on in the living room? You have to keep turning to the side. And the artsy wall annoys me. Anyway. :) The kids' room is so cute- love the Muppets touches. I do like all the muted tones with the small pops of color and like how they used a lot of natural elements and textures. High five! (And way better than last year.)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I used the Valley-girl "like" in my comment twice.
DeleteLike, I totally agree about the kitchen. (Ha!) It's SO lopsided. I don't mind its location as much, but I just hate the jumble of stuff they threw together.
DeleteI'm not sure what it is, but this house just doesn't do it for me. It doesn't feel like it flows well or something...just not put together right. Can't put my finger on it.
ReplyDeleteBut I do love the bathroom and that awesome counter top table in the kitchen.
Lol at Kristen and her Valley-girl comments :)
I think I like this one better accept for the bedrooms. Not a fan of the orange leather couch. I just really don't care for leather couches at all, I feel like you can't get cozy.
ReplyDeleteThe waterfall island in this home too - that's my absolute favorite feature!
I definitely like this house a lot better. I think that I tend to go for natural and wood elements since I grew up in a house that had a lot of that. Even if it doesn't have as much color, it ends up feeling warmer and more inviting because of the natural elements. I don't really understand the bunk bed situation either! I always wonder the same thing! And that room isn't really THAT big-- how the heck are you supposed to fit 4 kids into that tiny space?! A nightmare! I really like the lime green (or is it yellow?) and orange pops of color. The master bedroom feels too much on the traditional side for my tastes, especially with some of the more modern colors and lines in other aspects of the house. Overall though, much better than last year's!
ReplyDeleteOverall, I think I like this house better -- it does seem to treat the kids better -- no hallway beds! But I'm not too sure the kiddos would ever get to sleep with all those stripes.... and don't they realize that some kid would find a way to play acrobats on that beam support? I do like the master bedroom though, especially those chairs! The foyer and the kitchen leave me cold. And the length from the living room to the dining room.... I guess those acrobat kids would have fun on their skateboards... Ha!
ReplyDeleteI remember last year's house and yes, this one is SO MUCH BETTER! I actually don't mind the lighting of the photos so much. Although I'm not quite sure just how much direct sunlight this house would get anyway (??) but sure, I'll move in a heartbeat!
ReplyDeleteI like the overall color scheme and wood-and-stone-centric design of this one better... but I liked the location of last year's better. This house is gorgeous, but couldn't they just pick it up and move it some place warm?
ReplyDeleteAlso: agreed about the wood cross-section monstrosity over the fireplace - what is that?! Also, I don't really like the kids room. The floor makes it feel too much like a circus/clown-y, not in a good way.
I agree with you about the pictures. They aren't terribly inspired. I love the open layout of this house. I think that they overdid the natural aspect. It's already in the middle of the woods, you don't need to scream the concept. I like the bold colors paired with neutrals, though.
ReplyDeleteWell, guess my dream home must look a lot different! There are some fun things in here, but I agree - what happened to the kitchen? LOL
ReplyDeleteI love the windows and the woods. A warmer place would be good, but it's warmer than IL. The pictures make me feel like you were there.
