On the Cheap: Harry Potter

I've been in denial about this moment for a long time.

I'm excited, because I'm always excited for a new HP movie, but I also don't want it to get here because then things are over. OVER.

Harry Potter was/is more than just a book series to me. I started reading it when I was 14, and while it took me a few months to warm up to the first book (which you have to admit is less awesome than the rest), I've been hooked for the past 11 years.

The series was something to bond over. And there was so much anticipation before each book (and later, each movie release), that it feels really strange to think there's nothing to look forward to anymore.

So let's do a proper send-off, shall we?

Tom Riddle's diary, $25.

Print of Dumbledore's quote, $5.99.

Gryffindor necklace, $19.

Chamber of Secrets hollow book, $65.

Snape/Lily greeting card, $2.50

Are you a fellow HP fan? Did the series mean as much to you as it did to me? Are you seeing the movie at midnight? Feel free to link up any Harry-related posts in the comments. We can wallow in our conflicted feelings together. (Sigh.)

  2. My husband and I were in Edinburgh, Scotland, when the last book came out. We went to the Elephant House cafe, where JK Rowling wrote some of the early books, and had a lovely chat with a guy who had just started the Deathly Hallows.

Harry has definitely become a part of our culture over the past decade. Thanks for the ride, Harry.

  4. Oh maann.... While I have read the books a million times I have never felt the connection to the movies. However, I am still pretty sad that we are finally at the end that this is just.... it. :( Leaves a bit of a hollow feeling in my stomach. Sea Marie

  7. I love the books but I admit I haven't kept up with the movies. Maybe one day I'll get back to seeing them. In the meantime, at least the books last forever, and each time you re-visit the story you learn something new.

  8. Sorry for your loss...

I'm more of a Tolkien person, actually... and I didn't grow up with the HP books, but I do understand how the series could become an important part of your personal fantasies if you grew up following every step of it.
    It's a beautiful thing, really!

  9. Weird amiga, I tried to get into the LOTR books around the same time, and they just weren't floating my boat. I loved the movies, though, so maybe I should try the books again now that I'm older and wiser. :-)

  10. Oh man, I'm going to the midnight showing tonight. I'm incredibly excited. I really wanted to make this shirt to wear: http://www.stayathomeartist.com/2011/07/stencil-with-freezer-paper-harry-potter.html

But I ran out of time. Maybe I will make it next week and watch the older movies on DVD.

  11. I never did get into HP. My kids who are grown now didn't either. However, my husband has read every book, listened to every audio book and watched every movie...all of these multiple times! He has his ticket to see the movie Saturday and is like a little kid at Christmas! He is 53!!!!

  12. I'm definitely a Harry Potter fan and sad to see the series end. I think I'm probably going to wait a bit to see the last movie (which opens today!) because then it will really be over! But of course, I'll still watch the movies again and again.
