DIY: Adventures in Carpentry

Let's talk about that ugly shelf I just moved into the office. In addition to asking you guys what the heck I should do with it, I also interrogated my co-workers and mom. There were a lot of good ideas thrown around, but in the end, people with the most furniture experience kept asking the same thing, "Can you take the plastic off?"

It's on the flimsy side, anyway (and attached with staples), so it wouldn't be brain surgery to remove, but then what would I use for shelves? I seriously have no carpentry skills.

Then I remembered the magical thing about hardware stores: if you buy the lumber there, they'll cut it for you.

So off with her head the plastic!

I cut it with scissors! Cheap-o indeed.

Well. There's no going back now. Six pieces of wood and $15 later, I had this:

They're not attached yet, just sitting in place so I can see how they fit. The joints are a little gappy from the plastic, but otherwise she's lookin' good.

As for the finished product, Hubsey has gone all shabby-cottage again and wants it painted white. I'd better jump on that train while I can, because it's not everyday that a dude wants white furniture in the house.

What projects are you working on lately? Anybody else showing cheap plastic who's boss?

  1. That looks great! So glad you got the plastic off and great idea to go and get some boards cut. Ingenuity! And if you paint it (and if hubsey volunteers to do it, so much the better) then you don't have to worry about holes in the wood, or the wood matching. I love it!

  2. I like it much more without the plastic! Have you thought about doing some sort of weathered finish with a few colors? That might look kind of cool. Or you could stain it. I just finished re-upholstering a chair and restained the legs-- I was surprised at how far some stain can go! I'm excited to see what you do next with it!

  3. It is looking so much better without the plastic. I think it will look amazing when it all finished. I am not working on any DIY projects right now but I need to start working on my kids shared room.

  11. The only intention of this device is that to provide you the same essence of smoking but in a much safer way
and this is only possible with herbs. It is wise
to pack one third of the herb into the whip,
as you would need to do so incrementally. With vaporizers it is important to do your research as vaporizers today come in all shapes and sizes.
