What should we do in New York?

I know I'm a day late, but did you have a good weekend? We had fun with our baby nephew and hosted our annual Super Bowl party... and somebody was kind enough to share their cold with me. Just when I thought I wasn't going to get sick this year, too. Womp, womp.

Anyway, I don't think I've mentioned this before, but sometimes the Hubs gets to travel for work. Usually it's not anywhere that calls my name (no offense, Minnesota) but this time it's different. He's heading to NYC at the end of the month and I get to go with him!

Neither of us have been before (which is strange, considering how much we travel) and we're pumped to see it. There IS the slight issue of only having about 36 hours to get our sight-seeing on, so I'm trying to figure out the Ultimate Plan.

Obviously we can't do everything, but I still want to jam as much into that one full day as possible. Do we shop? Try a bunch of restaurants? Choose a museum? We looked at tickets for Book Of Mormon right away, but they're sold out. For months. And that was our only solid idea.

So now I need some help. If you're from NYC or you've been, what do you recommend? It doesn't have to be tourist-y, it just has to be fun and/or tasty. Our hotel is near Union Square and the Flatiron district, but we're willing to spread our wings and take the subway.

If you had 36 hours in New York, what would you do?

  1. IMO you definitely need to take a subway ride! Find out if there are any historic walking tours. I'd return to the Natural History Museum and the Public Library.

    Have a wonderful time!!!!

  2. Oh gosh! I've never been, but I SO want to go! I would definitely shop and visit Times Square, and a museum, and...I could go on and on about what I'd want to do. Did you say you only have 36 hours? Oh, and I'd buy one of those "I <3 NY" shirts and take pictures with it on. =)
Whatever it is that you do, HAVE FUN! And then share with us.

  3. I love New York. I went there for a month on business right after 9/11 - that was sad but the city was amazing. Being that it was business, we spent our time with the locals so they took us around.

For me the best things were the historical places - The MET Art Museum, The Statue of Libery & Ellis Island. Ellis Island was a little sad but I would not have missed it.

Anyway - you will have an amazing time whatever you decide to do.

  4. Stay the hell away from Times Square, I hate that area so much. Where you're staying is pretty ideal. Go to Greenwich Village, check out SoHo - alot of cool galleries there too and fun stores to window shop and places to eat. You got it covered. Flatiron District isn't bad either as you're close to Chelsea (more art galleries) and some mighty fine eating there too. You're close to the Museum of Sex, that's always a fun visit. :) Central Park is further north but still one of my favorite places to go to. Oh I can go on and on.

    1. Thanks, Marilyn! I had a feeling Times Square would be a bad move. :-) I've heard about the Museum of Sex before and I think it sounds so fascinating! Totally forgot about it until now.

  6. Most of my time in NYC is spent in Brooklyn because that's where most of my friends live, but I've been to Manhattan a dozen or so times and there is soooo much awesome stuff to do. Union Square is bustlin' - you'll have no problem finding fun! There's tons of shopping there. There's also a cool green market there that goes on a few days of the week. And MoMA isn't too far from there - and it is AMAZING if you're a modern art fan like I am :).

  8. Ohhh jealous! I would try to go to all the unique shops I can find, that aren't anywhere else but NY. All the really cool things seem to come from NY. Excited about finding your blog.

  9. I know you're only there for a short time, but you should check out at least one museum, Moma or the Met. You'll have no trouble finding plenty of shops and restaurants to try. I've actually never done the touristy things in NYC (like the statue of liberty) and I don't really think I'm missing anything, but that's just me.

  10. The Met museums is my favorite place in NY —I lived there for 5 years. In Brooklyn, not at the museum*

I was going to suggest the Freak Museum in Coney Island but I just read they have a wood-eating beetle infestation (!?)

Of course, there is all the exclusive shopping... (I so miss Uniqlo!)

  11. going to the museums is a definite. Look and see what the traveling exhibits are and pick a favorite. They get the best exhibitions! You have your choice of history and art. And if it's nice, I'd go for a walk in Central Park. It's an expensive place to eat, but try one night out on the town, with dinner and the theatre. Yes, a broadway show is like no other experience but NYC! If you're with children, that might be a little difficult... Have fun and enjoy! {:-Deb
