What Interior Design School Is Like

Since I started College 2.0 a couple of months ago, I've been getting some questions about my interior design degree and what we actually do in class. So I thought I'd take a little detour from my usual topics today and show you what's up.

First let me say that I'm nowhere near the decorating part of the program. We start with drafting--which is taught in epic 4-hour classes.

We've had to do a handful of floor plans, each taking between 5 and 7 hours to finish (not counting lab time in class--this is straight up homework).

They might look simple, but that's how they get you. Drafting isn't just making the house look good, the drawing has to be precise, too. Depending on the scale, I have to be accurate down to 1/4".

Even our wording has to be written in a specific style. It's called architectural lettering:

The lettering is actually my favorite part. Although, it's the last thing you add to a drawing, so I could just be feeling the sweet, sweet relief of being done. Either way, me likey.

It's weird to think that I have this much work to do and I'm not even going half-time. Just two classes for 5 credits, but I actually spend almost 6 in the classroom and another 8-ish doing homework. It's like having a side job. A side job I enjoy, but a side job nonetheless.

Anyway, this is what I'm learning! Now you know what I'm doing when I randomly skip a day on the blog.

Is there a degree you want to go back and get? Anybody else ever do any drafting? Or take some design classes?

  1. Oooh that looks like something those fancy designers have on HGTV. The lettering/font you have to use is so nice and clean. Love it! It is so great that you are working towards this degree...I admire your passion and drive!
I finished a certification to be a Veterinary Assistant last year but I'm still paying off the "tuition" so until I do that I won't actually have my certification in hand. I'm just awful at school so college has never been something I could see myself completing. (that sounds so awful!) Thank you for sharing this!

  2. Your drafting piece looks great! But I can see why it would take so long!
Are you planning on persuing this as a career when you graduate?
I'm glad I went to college for business, but I wish I would have taken some graphic design classes as well. I dream of going back sometimes :)

    1. Ideally I'd like to do the jewelry and some kind of interior design at the same time. And I'd prefer to keep working for myself, but that's all I've figured out so far. Ha ha.

  3. I hate to tell you this, but depending on your program, it will get so much worse! Hahaha. I actually have a Master's degree in Interior Design, and looking at your homework is taking me back. My program was 3 1/2 to 4 years long, depending on whether you wanted 2 semesters to work on your thesis or not. When you get to Autocad, everyone thinks it will be so much simpler than hand drafting, but by that point you're working on much more complex plans so it will just be many hours spent on the computer instead of your drafting table. And when you get to commercial spaces, there are so many building codes that have to be factored in. People think designers just pick out fabrics and paint colors...if only.

    1. Yeah, I've seen the work that people in the next drawing classes have to do and it's a lot. Perspective is next, and after that will be Color Rendering. Then I get to start doing it all over again on the computer! :-)

  7. It looks fascinating! I hope that things are going well so far.

I got my master's degree in special ed while my husband was in med school. I also went part-time, and it was still a lot of work. I'm glad that I did it, though.

  9. Gah! These types of drawings and letterings are floating around everywhere in our house! Though I have to say, interior design drawings are so much more fun than floor sections of a condo building with nerdy details about the colors and content of the concrete that is being used to build the building. Plus, when my sister and I were kids, we used to use the little stencils to make our own floor plans and it was so much fun. Waaaaaaay cooler than building architecture. (Just don't let Andrew know I said that or I'll be in trouble).

    1. We used to draw floor plans, too, though we didn't have any of the stencils. We would just draw giant rectangles to represent the outside of our mansions, and then free hand everything. :-)

And yeah, architectural drawings are a little blah. They're involved in the other class I"m taking right now and I'm just thankful I don't have to do any load calculating.

  10. The floor plans look great! It's so fun drawing by hand and your lettering is just perfect. I took some architecture courses in school, and loved it! until we started using AutoCAD. It's just not the same once you go digital!

  11. Wow, looks complicated. I always thought architecture would be a fun field but I doubt I would've had the patience and skill needed! So instead I studied journalism and English.
