Mood Board: Family Room

Family Room Detail

I've already learned all sorts of things by living in this new house for 5 days! One, I had forgotten that when you live closer to the ground, all sorts of creepy crawlies make their way inside. Like earwigs and mice. (Don't worry, the mouse was only in the garage. And it was dead.) I've also learned that when you go from a condo to an older house, sometimes your furniture doesn't work quite like it used to.

Our family room is particularly off-kilter right now:

Cooler instead of a console table? Check.

Seventeen different shades of brown? Don't be jealous.

Coffee table that crowds the seating space? You betcha.

It's funny how furniture can look so awesome in one place and so... not... in another. We've already ordered a new couch, but here are some other things we'd like to rock down there eventually:

The new couch will be gray and very similar to this one, and observant folks might have noticed that we already got the striped blanket (from IKEA). We also plan to paint the built-ins white, look for a real console, DIY a wood stump table and an upholstered coffee table, and track down a couple of side chairs for ample football seating. Whew!

Naturally, I'll keep you posted as the room chugs along. Have you had this kind of furniture issue before? Things don't really work in your new space? (I didn't think it would happen. Silly me.) What have you been decorating lately?

P.S. I'm also posting over at Kanelstrand today. Come say hello and check out some swanky recycled tote bags!

  1. Don't worry, everything will come along nicely. I can't wait to see built-ins painted white, that will look nice. :)

  2. I'm not sure anything in our living room goes together...LOL :)
I love the idea of painting the built-ins white! Will really brighten the room. And I love the pops of teal in your sample room :)

  3. I move at the end of the month, so fingers crossed! I'm on the look out for a new couch, where do you usually shop for furniture around here?

    1. Woo hoo! For big pieces like couches I always hit Macy's first. There's a furniture showroom in Oak Brook or the store on State Street. They actually have a sale going on right now! West Elm is another good option, and of course there's always the magical IKEA. Good luck!

    1. Yeah, that's the door to one of our sump-pumps. Nothing exciting. I was kind of hoping it would be a panic room, but no. It's unfinished and full of bugs.

  5. Hi Paige,
so you're in your new house already?! That's awesome. I remember it took months before we finally felt all the furniture was in the right place. Except for spiders (which I don't mind) we don't have that many creepy crawlies here, because it is too cold most of the time!!
    Happy furniture hunting :)

  6. so what do you have against brown? lol. i think the built in will look awesome white. Duni doesn't mind spiders? What the heck? Crazy girl! I hate pincher bugs aka earwigs. One actually pinched me last year. I'm not kidding. It must have come in on me from the garden and when I sat down, I felt a pinch and flicked my back and lo and behold...the dubious pincher bug fell to the ground. Ugh. So exciting getting a new place in shape. patience my dear, patience.

  7. Wow...you've got your work cut out for you! Yes...we've got those problems all over the house. Rearranging/ repurposing is helping, but I found out that not only moving, but just paint can change everything from great to ugly real fast! Hahah...I look at a room like you have though and think, oh my how lucky they are! What fun they will have!!

  8. Where did you order your new couch from? We will definitely need to order new furniture when we move because we've managed to make things work in small apartments that will probably look odd in a house too. I'm excited to see what you guys do with the place.

Also I just read your reply to Stela about the panic room and laughed because my bf totally wants one of those. I don't think it's gonna happen, though. We'll be doing what everyone else does, getting ADT, and saying a little prayer every time you hear things go bump in the night.

    1. The couch is from Macy's! It's where we got our old one, too. They have big sales a few times a year, so we always wait to purchase then. Does this mean you've found a house? (I hope!)

My husband wants a room hidden behind a bookshelf. Haha.

  9. Looks awesome. We just had the opposite problem, actually. We ordered coffee and end tables and they were tiny tiny small. It looked so dumb. We have new ones coming that are literally almost twice the size of the others that will fit much better. We just weren't paying good attention. But our living room is coming along, too. Bookcases on order will be painted white, and we desperately need some large wall art for one wall if you have any suggestions. We could do a double reveal!
