Dining Room: Inching Forward

Guys, I was on the BALL this weekend. Not only did I do all of my normal shop/blog work, but I also found stools for the kitchen, got a spectacular deal on some deck furniture (more on that in a second), and did a curtain switcheroo in the dining room.

Behold, my lovely white drapes!

And yeah, the massive table still doesn't have any chair buddies. We'll get there. You can ignore the pile of crap on it, too. Focus on the curtains! Ooooh, aaaah!

Here's how the room looked before:

Red! Now, I have nothing against red. I love red nail polish, and red lipstick, and red shoes--but I just don't want red curtains in my house. Plus, they were hung too low for the room, riiiight above the window trim. Hanging curtains higher on the wall will make the room feel taller, which is great when you have standard 8-foot ceilings like we do.

Let's have a look at the magic in action. Here's a side-by-side:

Big difference, right? The white curtains draw your eye up toward the ceiling, bringing on the height illusion we talked about, and making the window feel bigger, too. It's totally my favorite room now.

Now, as for that deck furniture...

...I scored the table and BOTH chairs for $86! They're from Lowes, and the original price for the set was $400, which, honestly, I would have never paid. They were already on clearance for about 75% off, and then I used a $20 gift card on top of it. Boom! The benefits of shopping around, y'all.

What have you been doing around the house lately? Anybody else feel a complete room transformation justs by changing one thing?

  1. Congratulations! The room really looks much better with white curtains, I fully agree with you. Red ones looked too heavy to my taste. Besides, they visually break the room making it look smaller. As for your new furniture, I am very jealous. It is gorgeous.

I haven't been doing anything lately, just planning to. At least I need to remove one door which is not needed, paint the walls and polish the floors - and I can live with it. I think I will take a closer look at your blog: I need to identify some low hanging fruit.

  3. Love the curtains! They definitely look better higher up and the white color is great because they will go with anything. It definitely freshens up the room. And the patio furniture is great. Can't beat a great sale. It's almost like you'd have to buy it whether you wanted it or not.

  5. Ok I would be one of those jerks setting their curtain rod just above the window, yup lol! But I do like your method better and I feel silly. =P

    1. Don't feel silly! I never thought about it this way until I saw somebody else do it (on a blog) a few years ago. It was like the light turned on.

  6. Very nice! I'm personally against using red in my kitchen or dining room because I learned that fast food restaurants use the color red to get people's digestion started making them eat faster and get out of the restaurant faster. Why do that to myself? lol

  8. I love when I finally find something new for the apartment. More recently I found bags of potpourri super cheap at michaels and I found baskets at the goodwill for 55 cents each. Now, every room has a nice smelling basket.

We rearranged our living room Thursday night and finally finished decorating it after being here for over a year!

  12. The simple white drapes are light years better! Good job on all the deals too. I did used to have plain red linen drapes from Pottery Barn in an apartment years ago-haha-but everything was white, we weren't allowed to paint, and I was desperate for some color. :)

  15. The white drapes really bright up the room! What a great and simple transformation.

We've ordered window furnishings and they will be installed in another week or so. I can't wait!! Until then, we're still flashing the neighbors whenever we get out of the shower :).
