Sit on it, Potsie.

Now that we've changed the curtains in the dining room, it's time to focus on the other big thing(s) we're missing in there. Chairs!

Since the table was an impulse purchase (but a great one) at the Crate & Barrel outlet, it didn't come with any. I didn't think tracking some down would be a big deal--there are SO many kinds of dining chairs out there--but we're totally stumped. It's like watching me do a math problem over here.

And actually, numbers are part of the problem. Because we need to buy eight chairs, the price per item can't be too high. At all. There's also the minor issue of style. I'm a little more eclectic and vintage-inspired, whereas Hubsey is a total fun hater leaning toward something a little more quiet. So, naturally, it's time to talk it through with you guys! Here's a pretty solid mock-up of where we're going with the room:

Dining Room Idea Board

You're already familiar with the table and white curtains. We want some kind of bold rug (since we'll eventually rip out the carpet) and this striped one is only $300 for an 8'x10'. An industrial light fixture will go above the table, and some sort of travel posters will hit the walls. I included those flowers because I bought a vase last week and I'm actually using it. Boo ya.

Keep that room in mind while you look at these chairs:

Chair Options

I can actually make a case for all of them, but some tickle my fancy more than others. Hubsey likes the two options in the middle, and I like the other four. Can I tell you a secret? I really love the classroom chair. This specific example is kinda pricey, but I found a similar version from a school supply company for only $52. Although, something dark would look good in that room, too.

I'm torn! I'm betting it will eventually come down to our budget, since all of these would be cool in their own way. What are your thoughts? Any tips on things to avoid? Do you have a favorite from these? What's your dining room like?

  1. I'm personally digging the top middle. Maybe its because I would love upholstered chairs - but our hand me down set is working just fine now. They also look super comfy - which for me at least is important in the dining room for when that table gets taken over as a second crafting space ;-)

Maybe we're not super careful with our furniture - but our wood chairs have lots of scratches from jeans (little rivets on the pockets)

  2. That one's from Crate & Barrel, too, and I haven't seen any at the outlet! (You know how I hate to pay full price for things.) And since you mentioned the rivets, I checked my pants and none of mine have them on the back pockets. Whew!

  3. I am voting top middle too...love the grey and comfort! Plus I think it will make the wood look warm! Have fun!!! and go with your gut! :)))

    1. I know I'm in the minority with this, but I totally don't mind sitting on wooden chairs! My desk chair is wood without a cushion, and the stool I'm sitting on right now is plain old wood. Maybe I'm weird?

I do like the gray, though. :-)

  5. Since you have black accents (wall frames, curtain rod) in the room and then the fab walnut-y wood table, I think playing off of that mix is the answer. I like either 1) the upholstered grey chairs on either end with the six school chairs filling in down the sides... or 2) the black armed chairs on the ends with the six school chairs down the sides (probably not enough space to have the armed chairs all the way around). Having more substantial comfy chairs for the two of you makes sense because you'll use them most often. The bottom left is awesome for the side chairs if you can get them for a good price!

  6. I like the top right or the middle bottom. I prefer the top right, but the middle bottom would be easier to dust, which is a consideration to keep in mind if you're getting dark wood. The grey upholstered chairs are also nice, but I'm guessing one of the pricier options.

  7. I really like the top right or the top middle. The black ones might give you more rug options in case you want to change things up in the future. Upholstered chairs are very comfy and will encourage your guests to linger at the table and chat. Chairs with arms can be tricky when you need to get kind of close to a table when you're eating. Top right wouldn't be very hard to dust with a Swiffer duster.

  8. I personally think, given the style of the room, option #2 or #3 would work best :)

So exciting (and frustrating, and expensive!!) to decorate a new home ;) It's going to look great when you're done, though!!

  9. Laughing pretty hard about the tricked out "a total fun hater" part. I could have guessed what his favs are. I say no grey on grey. It makes the grey less important and less charming. I do however, vote for that top left choice. The style just reads right for that room.

  10. i like your pick or the white plastic one in other corner. actually LOVE that one. but it's your dining room. hhhmmmm, the hubs....can you go buy them without them, put them in the dining room, style the room and then he'd have to love them? i'd also say you may want to SIT on it potsie. seriously, you just never know how a chair is gonna feel to your tush unless you take it for a test run.

btw. you must be watching reruns because you are far too young to remember potsie.

  11. Given that you're probably ordering all those chairs because other people will be sitting in them, you might want to consider upholstered chairs or chairs that can easily have a seat cushion added. (If you don't mind sitting on wooden seats, you could just get the cushions that tie on and add them when people come over and take them off the rest of the time. ) Other than that, I think all of these options are great. :)

    1. Yeah, adding cushions is our plan. (Of course, that won't work for the plastic one, but whatever. That's just a pipe dream, anyway.) Maybe I'm weird, but I totally don't mind sitting on wood! I feel like it makes me sit up straighter.

  12. Oh, so many good comments! That's what happens when the internet goes out for half a day. Anyhoo...I agree with Pam that if you CAN definitely sit on them because you never know how your tush will react to a chair. That being said, I really like the three dark/black chairs, but I'm also kind of plain. Cushions on those could also be used to make a statement- like gray chevron- and they can be changed as your decor changes. Can't wait to see what you decide!

Wonder if fun hating hubseys are not as rare as I thought. Got one too. Maybe he's not a visionary? In any case, mine makes a mean cocktail so I keep him around...

  15. We have chairs very similar to the bottom middle one. They are boring but I suppose practical. I have dressed them up with fun cushions though. If I had to do it over again, I think I'd pick something more funky. Of course, if I had, I'd probably be wishing I had picked something more practical. Flip a coin :).

That's where I bought my ghost chair and they have a replica of the eames rocker. It's by my sister's house so let me know if you end up going and I can meet you there!

  17. I love the one in the top, right corner :)
The school chair is fun, but I don't remember them being very comfy...LOL!

Sad note...we don't even have a dining room!

  19. I really like the top middle, both the style and the coloring. I currently have a wood table that came without chairs and I hate the idea of picking chairs because I can't match the wood colors...and that matters to me. That being said, getting the $52 classroom chairs and painting them a coordinating color thrills me...painted, colorful furniture is my current decorating love.

  20. Hi from the Etsy blog team! I don't know if you've already picked out your chairs but here's some tips from me, a recent interior design graduate. I would go with the chair in the top middle, if it's not out of your price range. The first reason I say this is because if the striped material on your material board is wallpaper, the gray will match nicely with that. The wood of that chair is also very close to the wood of the table, which is good because if you get too many different colors going too close together, it wont look put together. The style of the chair matches the table well with it's very square and geometric lines and matches the artwork well as it has sort of a mid century modern feel to it. Like they said above, upholstered chairs often make guest want to stay at the table longer and converse, so while you may not mind the wood chairs, think about your guests, as well. The wood backs may not be comfortable if at too straight of an angle. Just some suggestions to think about if you haven't bought your chairs yet. Can't wait to see which one you picked!
