Affordable Style: Seasonal Shift

It was 25 degrees yesterday, which isn't really something I dig in the middle of March, so I'm just going to ignore it and pretend it's warm. This is the first day of spring, but it feels like December again.

Anyway, a friend of mine asked me a few days ago if I ever change my decor depending on the time of year. She didn't mean for the holidays, though I do that, she just meant in general. Do I use lighter colors in the spring and summer, for example? So I thought about it for a minute and realized, yeah, I do switch things up on a pretty regular basis. I don't go out and buy new furniture every other second, but I do change out pillows, artwork, etc. Changing accessories is a fast and easy way to keep a space feeling fresh. I had never really thought about it before, but it's something I do fairly often.

To illustrate how easy it is to completely change the feel of a room with just a few things, I did a couple of mockups for you using identical furniture but different accessories. This first room features a darker winter palette (which I love and now want to implement--how you doin', green pillow?):

Winter

I like darker colors all the time, but they're especially nice in cold weather when you cozy up indoors and watch Netflix. They feel so inviting, especially when there's snow on the ground. The artwork is too small to read here, but it says, "I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night" which also lends itself to the overall moody theme. Plus, it's literally dark for 15 hours a day in the winter.

This room has the same furniture, but lighter accessories for spring:

It's a huge difference, isn't it? Just brighter throw pillows and artwork totally change the feel of the room. I stuck with a lot of blues again, but I chose shades lighter than the navy above. I like the thought of going with a bold ikat, too, since people tend to have a little more pep in their step as the weather warms up. I get totally freaked out by too many patterns in my own house, but looking at this mockup makes me smile anyway. It's so happy!

Are you a seasonal decorator? What's the easiest switcheroo in your house? I have a throw pillow addiction, so those are always in rotation around here. Hubsey thinks its weird to have so many, but what am I supposed to do, sit on a wood board? I need to be comfortable. Anyway, what else are you doing to get ready for spring?

  1. I love that chair! I should do some spring decorating. I still have a washi-deer on my living room wall from christmas...

  2. I'm not a seasonal decorator. I'm barely a decorator as you know. What usually happens in my home is once I find a set up I like it stays that way until I'm ready to move. I like pretty things but I just lack the motivation to improve my space. I'm trying to get better at that. One of things I would like to do is add brighter pillows to my living and some bright wall art.

Even though we have vaulted ceilings and white walls fro some reason it feels institutional.

  3. I agree that switching a few things can make a huge difference! I don't do it seasonally, just whenever I feel I need a change. I mostly move things around from one room to another, and every once in a while I buy a new piece of art or pottery or something else fun on Etsy or at vintage stores. But even little things make a big difference. :)

  4. Those little changes make such a huge difference in the feel of the two. I honestly never thought about changing things out with the seasons, but it makes a lot of sense and seems really affordable to do too.

  5. It is amazing how much different changing up a few accessories can make to a room! Now that we have a house and I have more time to think about things like seasonal decor, I do make changes on a somewhat regular basis.

  6. I never thought about doing this ever, except for bedding and curtains (though we don't have those any more). My mom always had summer and winter bedding sets. Now that we have our own house, we change nothing when the seasons change LOL! But I like the idea of it. The second mood board is definitely fun and light and make a huge change from the first one (which I also want to snatch up the whole thing). Great suggestion!

  7. Wow what a difference! And I love that you use home decor items on polyvore, because I thought it was just fashion, until I saw some of your collections. Fun stuff! :)

  10. When we got our Ikea couch two years ago, I was happy to note they had slip covers in dark and light fabrics. I think I think I will go for the charcoal grey one next winter. Now, I just want fresh, bright colours in the home! A change of cushions usually does the trick. Hope you get to paint your cabinets soon!!

  11. I have never done that before. I do like the idea though. When the kids grew up I quit decorating for all the holidays except Christmas. Now that I have a grand baby on the way though, I think I'll start decorating for the other holidays too.

  13. I never change out the accessories in my rooms, but this is inspiring me to change it up this season. It really does make a big difference to change things up. Thanks for this post, I think I am going to have to do a little shopping :)
