Reading is one of my favorite things to do, but I don't always have time to sit down with a whole book. Or if I do find some extra time and grab a novel, then all I do is read, read, read for three days until it's done. Which is cool on my end, but customers usually expect me to make the jewelry they buy, so days-long reading marathons aren't great for my life right now.
What works really well instead are magazines. They're short enough that I won't throw my whole day off if I start to read during lunch, but still have enough content to make me feel like I'm workin' the old grey matter. I subscribe to a few of them, and it's like getting a present every time one of them shows up in the mailbox. I immediately start thinking about when I can take a break with a cup of tea. Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm due for a couple of new issues, so while it's on my mind, let me tell you about my favorites.
National Geographic -- I thought I'd start with the one that's a little unexpected. The readership is usually older than people in their late 20s, but whatever. I like to know what's going on, and they cover a lot of interesting topics that I might not otherwise hear about. Like how certain venoms can cure unrelated diseases, or a tribe in Afghanistan who live in the mountains above the tree line and call their area "the roof of the world." It's just so interesting, and when I finish an issue I always have 10 new things to talk about.
This Old House -- Our abode was built in 1970, which isn't OLD old, but it's definitely not new either. Approaching middle-age? Let's go with that. Anyway, This Old House has a great combination of pretty home features and practical information. Their DIY projects aren't always the flashiest or most interesting, but they're helpful. And really, when you own a house that isn't new construction, that's the kind of stuff you need.
ShopSmart -- This is the sister publication to Consumer Reports, which I also like, but it's honestly kind of a snore. ShopSmart covers more fun topics, like the best makeup brands and tastiest chocolate. They also have sections with info from Consumer Reports--appliances and cars, for example--but they approach the findings more like a regular magazine instead of with charts and graphs. I'm a visual learner, so the more product pictures they stick in there, the better.
House Beautiful -- We don't subscribe to this one, but I buy the latest issue every time I travel. They have nice interviews with the homeowners and designers for all of their featured homes, and I like to know why they chose what they did. I have a feeling that will come in handy for me someday.
Are you a magazine person? Do you get them on paper, or read them on your iPad? (I'm still a paper fan, obviously.) Which ones are your favorites? Anybody else love National Geographic?!
We used to get National Geographic when I was a kid. I think the only magazine we're getting at the moment is The New Yorker. I do still buy lots of different ones at the magazine stand, though. I have to have magazines when I travel because I can't really read novels on planes. I get nauseated if there's too much turbulence, so sometimes all I can do is look at pretty pictures.
ReplyDeleteI've never read This Old House magazine, but my dad forced me to watch countless episodes growing up. I never really paid attention then, but I should probably check it out now...considering our house would probably be considered a senior citizen.
I used to have to watch This Old House episodes too!
DeleteI only subscribe to one: Food Network Mag and I absolutly love it. When I travel I really love to purchase and read Outside Magazine. It's full of fun vacation things and extreme sports.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read This Old House - but like the above comment watched it all the time. I also had the bonus of living in Salem, MA when I was little and we'd see Steve Thomas at the dry cleaners alot.
I used to subscribe to Food Network Mag, too. We got it for a couple of years but we only try new recipes like, once a month, so it wasn't worth it for us to keep getting it. We held onto all of the old issues, though! They're great.
DeleteI'm definitely a magazine gal. I just can't take the time to sit down and get into a book, so a magazine is a nice choice. I used to get like 10 scrapbook magazines, but I don't scrapbook as much anymore, so I cut way back. My reading choices aren't as grown up as yours...lol. I read People, All You and the occasional Airboat Magazine...yes, they have a magazine :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with Meg- I love Food Network mag. My mom gets it and then gives it to me. I also get Better Homes and Gardens. They just always have pretty house features. I do love Real Simple, though I'm not getting it right now, and I was getting Martha for awhile but then I just felt like it was a little too pie-in-the-sky for me.
ReplyDeleteI really like National Geographic. I used to get it before but I haven't had the subscription for a while. I really like their pictures and it's very educational.
ReplyDeleteRyan has this frequent flyer miles that he doesn't use so they offer free magazine subscriptions. I have subscribed to a bunch of fashion/teenage type magazine such as lucky or Instyle. I thought it would help with some inspiration but as I actually read the magazines they are pretty awful in topic. Not to mention that I can't really relate to the women that wear the clothes or even the beauty products since they gear it towards young Caucasian women. I did subscribe to Essence magazine and I like that because it actually recommends hair products for kinky curly hair girls and even make up tips for my skin color but my best friend mentioned that they become the same after you read a few issues.
I think sticking to informative magazines are the way to go.
I love magazines. I used to read lots of art and fashion magazines, but these days I don't have as much time to read them as much as I would like. I love This Old House, so my cool ideas and lots of DIY projects that would work well in my old house. Enjoy your magazine time!

I love magazines, the problem is, that I can't throw anything away. My storage room is stuffed with piles of magazines.
ReplyDeleteI'll pretty much read anything I can get my hands on. Haha. Most days I can't justify buying a $5 magazine, especially with so much online content available these days. So, I hit up the library for mine! I like Real Simple & Coastal Living lately.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite magazine is Entertainment Weekly. I love reading about "behind the scenes" happenings for movies and books. I'm with you on being a fan of paper magazines. I don't read any of the magazines on your list, so I have a whole list of suggestions now!
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time making time for books as well, and I always feel guilty about it. But I LOVE reading magazines... or should I say, flipping through them, and looking at all the pretty pictures. :) My favorite is Country Living, hands down. It doesn't have much by way of fashion, but there are tons of great ideas for home decor, diy projects, craft projects, collecting, caring for your home (and even your pets)... okay sorry. I'll stop there. But I love country living magazine! :)
ReplyDeletethis is so fun.
ReplyDeletei have had this topic in my 'blog queue' for a long time.
we read TONS of mags ; at least 10..
I love thumbing through magazines, but I don't subscribe to many anymore. Pinterest has become my source for pretty pictures. We recently received some back issues of Smithsonian as a gift. Looking forward to reading those!
ReplyDeleteI recently bought a bunch of magazines at the bookstore on a whim. I forgot how much I loved flipping through them. I got a House Beautiful, a couple other design mags, and some fashion ones too! I loved it.
ReplyDeleteNational Geographic for the win! I got a digital archive of every issue since 1888 for my birthday this year.
