Weekend Update: Messy House Edition

In the spirit of keepin' it real, I want to take you guys on a tour of our house as it looks right now. If you follow me on Twitter and/or Instagram, you might know that our basement had some water creeping in last week. We were already in the middle of a few DIY projects when it happened, so things are extra bonkers around here. Every room is chaos, and I know you'll think I'm exaggerating, so I took some pictures yesterday to prove it.

Exhibit A: Basement furniture, now featured in the dining room! It's kind of like an obstacle course, which means it's also like the furniture section at GoodWill:

Exhibit A, part 2: More basement spillover in the kitchen.

Exhibit B: The empty (and carpet-free!) basement. Those last few scraps are gone now, but you get the idea:

Exhibit C: The cracks in the floor that let all the water in. There were several more spiderwebbing their way across the room:

Exhibit D: The smurf-blue third bedroom that was FINALLY going to be painted. (See those white splotches by the ceiling? The previous owners had attached some alphabet artwork with 3M strips, which ripped off drywall when we removed them. You're looking at spackle.)

Exhibit E: And then I ran out of primer and had to go back to the store, so the room still has Furniture Mountain in the middle of it, plus two blue walls.

Exhibit F: We've also been testing paint samples in the bathroom. The gray was a mistake--I got too excited about changing stuff in a real house and the pendulum swung too far. It's like when you see somebody looking cute with bangs and then decide to cut some yourself. Sadness always follows.

See, I wasn't kidding! It's nuts in here, but I'm excited because this means we're making a lot of progress. The basement was the only unexpected part, and even that's okay because I hated the carpet down there, anyway.

Have you been working on your house now that spring is almost here? Anybody else have a surprise project? What do you plan to change this year?

  1. Well, it's not exactly mess, but if you insist :-) It looks more like a real-life tetris in the kitchen. Hope you fix your basement soon.

    1. I think it's messy, because there are only two other rooms in the house! There's really nowhere to go without any clutter/tools/paint.

  2. You should come check out my house if you think that is chaos, lol! Hope everything gets fixed up soon!

  3. Flooded basements are no fun. Glad all the water is gone. Are you guys re-cementing to fill over the cracks?

    1. Yeah, and I think we might have it professionally done. The previous owners appear to have attempted a patch in a corner, but it cracked right through again.

  4. Oh dear.
That is so awful that water seeped in through those cracks. I hope none of the appliances were damaged. Smurf-blue! Must've been a kid's room before...
I totally hear ya about getting over-excited about something. My bangs have grown out thank goodness ;-)
Hope you get the basement fixed up soon!

  5. It looks pretty neat despite the spilage into the other room. My living room is looking kind of messy since that is where we are painting our massive dresser and our clothes are on the floor in the bedroom and since everything is a message we haven't made the bed.

I do hope to have everything done and cleaned up by the end of tomorrow. I'm soo looking forward to it.

    1. Well, thanks! Our bedroom is messy, too, but there's not a DIY reason for that so it didn't really fit with the "theme" for today. We're just lazy about putting our clothes away, haha.

  6. People don't have basements where I live because we're basically at sea level. I had a basement in Virginia and it was nothing but trouble. At least I was renting so it wasn't my problem in a financial sense, but a sewer pipe actually backed up into the basement once!

  7. bummer about the basement.... do you have a sump pump? looks like it may not be a bad idea to add one - even patching the cracks, if there is water it will find somewhere to go.

    1. We have two, actually. One of them wasn't directing water far enough away from the house last week, and a big puddle formed right by our foundation. But that's been fixed, so now it's just the floor.

  8. Ugh, yucko. The cracks are a big bummer. We had one "settling" crack from front to back when we moved in. Hubs filled in the half where we finished the basement, but not on the other side yet. Also consider a coat of tanking paint before you finish it off again- it helps to waterproof the cement. We did ours halfway up the walls, too.

I can't wait to see how the bedroom turns out. It is such a pain to have rooms empty because that stuff has to have a place to go. We lived just like you are for basically the entire time we were working on the house. I just wanted to put stuff away!

  9. It's going to be so nice when it's finished; you have to keep that in mind through the chaos, although it doesn't really look that bad! :)

I'm sad the grey didn't work out. We tested like 5 colors before we picked the dark teal we painted in one room, and the guy at the paint store said most people will test way more than that. I guess it's worth it to be sure. Actually, I've heard a lot of people say they have regrets about white. They see pictures on the internet and think it looks bright and magical, and then they paint their whole house white and hate it. We are still liking the teal so far.

We have more projects planned for the spring. We're trying to save up money now, but it's a struggle.

  11. Oh wow...Furniture everywhere, but it's still not as bad as I've seen some places when they've had unexpected house mishaps. You're doing great! I have a feeling you're going to be busier than usual these days!
For that smurf blue room - I guess those 3M ARE extra sticky, being that they pulled off drywall! Yikes!

  12. It looks like you have a few shin banging hazards for the moment :). Sounds like you're making great progress though! Hope the basement leaks didn't cause too much damage.

  13. Bummer about your basement, but it looks like you guys kept things pretty under control. I'm sure it's frustrating but it will be worth it in the end.

  15. Water in the basement is never fun! We recently had our basement walls fixed and looked into waterproofing as well. They told us when the dirt under a house settles, it creates a false water table, so when it fills up with water, the water comes in through the floor. Waterproofing is next on our list of fixes!
Good luck with finishing up all your DIYs :)

  16. Love the thing with the bangs--so true!
Water in the house always sucks especially when you were already working on other parts of the house.
    Great dining table.
