Flood Zone

I didn't know this until today, but this is what your backyard can look like when the storm sewers overflow:

via instagram, during the downpour

It's kind of hard to see because of the fence, but the water goes riiiight up to our neighbor's house. They have six inches of water in their family room:

The actual grate for the sewer is located just behind the chain link fence, outside the garden. Judging by the planter in the back corner, this is about a foot of standing water:

And this is our corner. That car made it through, but several have stalled out and had to be pushed.

Chicago is officially under a flash flood warning, and several major highways are closed this morning due to high standing water. Obviously I won't have class and Hubsey isn't going to work. We have water steadily leaking into the basement again, but there isn't much we can do yet. The sunroom has been a bigger problem, with more of this business happening today, but so far it hasn't leaked into the kitchen.

If you're in the area, I would just stay home today. It's a mess. If you have to leave the house, be careful and watch out for standing water. We're expected to get several more inches of rain today, so any water already on the roads will only get higher.

How's the weather in your neck of the woods? How are my fellow Chicagoans doing?

  2. Wow! That looks horrible! I'm only about 30 or 40 miles away from Chicago. I live near the Indiana Dunes State Park. We got nothing like that. I hope it doesn't get any worse for you.

  3. Wow! There is flooding here too but it doesn't look that bad outside my house. I haven't been anywhere yet though...

  4. Yikes! ah - feel so bad, I hope you make it through without too much water damage. And I'm glad you haven't put down the new wood floor in the basement yet. Time for some serious waterproofing?

  5. Oh No! We live in a flood zone where our house is at, there is a creek near by, and the water has gotten pretty high at times, but thankfully not as bad as this! I so hope you get through this without a terrible amount of damage, and I also hope you have flood insurance, just in case. Oy! :/

  6. Yuck and a half! I had no idea how bad it was in Chicago until I saw posts about canceled work and school in the Chicago area on Facebook. I hope that your damage isn't too severe. Stay safe.

  7. Oh, no! That's what happens where I live every time it rains hard and it isn't fun! I've had a car flooded out with water over the seats because of a rainfall that wasn't even a hurricane or tropical storm or anything. I hope everything's going ok in your neighborhood now!

  8. oh how awful! I'm so sorry for the trouble you're having. We are partly sunny, and very warm with your cold front heading our way, causing bad storms and pop up tornadoes. Tomorrow, very cold.

Good luck, I hope the rain ends soon.

  10. Yikes, what a mess. We had bad flooding like this sometimes when I lived back up in Ohio. It's just a pain. Hope it goes down soon and your basement is ok.

  11. We definitely didn't get it as bad in the city as you guys did, although my power steering locked up for a few scary seconds on my drive to work this morning!

  20. My folks flooded in the September floods in 2008. Since then, Bartlett has done its best to keep the drains clear and create places for the water to go but their sewers backed up big time and it was scary! I feel for your neighbors, cleaning up after that much water is gross and what you lose can be heartbreaking. I hope you're still doing well!

  22. Lucky your house was spared by the flood, unlike some of your neighbors'. Imagine the cost you had to spend to fix the water damage, and all the inconveniences you had to go through during the restoration period. Has anything been done now about the sewers? Helga@TCC General Contracting

  23. That must have been an experience for you, Paige, and for everyone in the neighborhood. Being flooded is really a pain in the neck. We're scared for our safety plus the damage it caused to our house. How is it, by the way? I hope you already fixed and restored your house from all the damages so all of you can go back to your daily routine. --Dave Davies @ AdvanceRestoration.ca

  24. That looks terrible. I hope the flood won’t totally go into your house and cause possible damage to its structure. I don’t mean to scare you, but you know how awful water damage could bring. That being said, you must do all your best keep your house dry. Stay safe! Veronica @ Dry First
