Pinterest Picks (and a brief discussion of current events)

Before we carry on with business as usual, I need to take a moment to acknowledge how utterly insane this week has been. First the bombings at the Boston Marathon, then the fertilizer plant exploding in Texas, and now the Marathon suspects have gone on a shooting spree in a suburban Boston neighborhood. One of them was killed by police, but the other is still at large and armed. The city is on lockdown, the ENTIRE city of Boston, and residents are being told to stay in their homes. I'm so stunned and horrified that I can't think of adequate words. If you're in the lockdown area, know that we're all thinking of you and hoping the situation is under control as soon as possible.

If you want to stay posted on the events as they happen, I recommend following this guy on Twitter. He's the social media editor for Reuters, and is incredibly well-informed.

In local news, flooding is still an issue in a lot of areas, and most of downtown Naperville is closed. Residents are being asked to avoid the area. All street closures can be seen right here.

I feel kind of silly going into Pinterest Picks, but it might be good to offer up a distraction if anybody wants one. Think of it as a hug for your brain.

This chair is adorable. It's a new take on the paint-dipped trend, and I actually like it more this way:

This is a lighthouse in upstate New York that's been turned into a bed and breakfast. You can see a tour of the interior by following that link, too. Maybe we should go there for our next vacation...

Leopard sandals! Who needs leopard sandals? Answer: everybody.

This is a wonderful coaster DIY. I might substitute smooth tiles for the tumbled marble they used, but that's a nitpick. I really like that none of them match:

And finally, not that either of us are scientists, but I love this cutting board. If you look closely, the top says "I use this cutting board periodically." Ha! Puns!

It feels strange to say this, given the crises scattered around the country, but I hope everybody has a good weekend. As good as you can, anyway. Hugs for everybody.

  1. Crazy, crazy week. The news almost looks like it should be followed by "April Fools!" Let's hope that normalcy returns soon.

I love all your finds. The chair is really cool (What is with all the paint-dipped stuff? I saw a set of 3 wooden spoons with dipped handles for $29. $29!!! They're WOODEN. SPOONS.) and I love the sandals! I'm not big on animal print but I love those. If I were the type of person to say "lurve" I would.

  3. Thanks for the distraction Paige! Loving that chair and the cutting board. I'm thinking that would be a great project for some afforadable ikea chairs! or i can look for some when we hit a flea market this sunday.

I was at work before the official shut down was put in place - so I'm in town staying at my office until they catch that kid. My office is very far away from the greatest activity today but in the lockdown area. I hope it's soon! I have Book of Mormon tickets for tonight!

  4. Very crazy week indeed. I'm on the west coast and we happened to catch the late night news (10pm our time) and saw some of the police action last night, live. They didn't mention at the time that one of the guys had been killed though, but I am glad they found who did the Boston bombings, it's awful. And my heart goes out to those in Texas as well, so much sadness this week.

I have leopard flats and I LOVE them, wear them all the time. In fact, I bought them on sale last fall and they were so cheap I bought two pairs for when one pair wears out, lol...

Hoping next week is better than this, for sure. ♥

  9. I can't comprehend all the bad things happening and it's very overwhelming so the news is off here. It is nice to get away if even for a little bit so I enjoyed seeing your picks. That chair is great!

  11. I love that chair and also agree that the tiles would've been better smooth. Hoping the water situation in your basement is ok. I think that storm is headed our way tonight. Ugh.
