Look who bought some more old furniture.

It was me! Look at this beauty:

Not that I don't already have another project I need to do first, but I've apparently developed a bit of a problem when it comes to seeing vintage furniture and leaving it at the store. Or in this case, the estate sale.

I love the legs and the lines and wanted it to come live with us, even if it has janky water stains and, um, peeling veneer:

The best part? Just like that coffee table I fixed up in March, this was only $10. The dude just wanted it gone, but hey, that's better for me. I'm not sure what color I'll paint it yet, or if we'll put it in the basement or the artist formerly known as the smurf room, but I'd like to have it done before I go back to school.

Have you scored any crazy secondhand deals lately? What color do you think I should paint this? Do you have any tips on fixing wacky veneer?

  1. that's a great deal! I haven't scored anything lately--I did text jamie with a great deal last week, for a piece very similar to this - it was 1/2 off at $20, and in great condition. She declined because she's trying to stay away from big items for her booth, and her house is overflowing. :)

  3. We came very very close to buying a mid century dresser on craigslist that was in excellent shape...I'll probably blog about it soon. Anyway, we decided to pass on it because no matter how pretty it was, it just wasn't practical for our needs. But $10 is crazy. It seems like if the dude wanted it gone, he should've just given it to you! What's the point of $10? Haha. It would cost him a lot more to pay someone to come haul it away.

  4. Wow, that's a really great piece! If it were me, I'd put some super strong glue under the veneer, then clamp it down so it dries nice and tight, then use wood filler to smooth out the missing area... and I love a stone grey color for the paint because it will forever go with any decor. ;) great find!

  5. I don't think I could have left that behind either :) It really does have great potential... and for $10, yes! Looking forward to seeing what you do with it!

  6. That is a fab deal..and with the issues, you don't have to feel bad about painting it. I second the wood glue/clamps and wood filler.I use a piece of board with the clamp to distribute the "squish" evenly and I put some saran wrap between the "squisher board" and the glued veneer so as not to glue the board to the dresser (live and learn there!) I'd paint it black or if you wanted it to be a focal point a really bright color..electric blue..lime green..hot pink..coral..too cool!

    1. Okay, good, I was thinking of using wood filler but wasn't sure about the big gashes. Thanks!

  7. I would love to know what you do with it! I think I would paint it in a light colour and then maybe the legs in a bright colour for contrast.

  8. Great find! I believe my parents had something like this in the 70s :)
Sorry, no idea what to do with the veneer, but as for colour I'd probably sand it down and paint it a pale colour, like mint or butter yellow :)

  10. Holy crap! What a great find and for $10! I think you should stick with the original wood. Maybe sand it down and do a glossy lacquer finish. If it was nice and glossy it'd truly be a great mid-century modern piece!

    1. I wish I could, but all of the wood is actually veneer! A lot of it is missing on the bottom edges of both sides, so to do a good patch I have to paint it. :-( Otherwise, I'd totally leave the color alone.

    1. Not sure yet! We might keep it as a dresser and put it somewhere for general storage, but Hubsey is wondering if we can somehow turn it into a bar for the basement. That would be pretty badass, I'll give him that.

  13. What a great find! That piece has SO much potential.

My blogging buddy Traci from All Things Luci Rae would be a great person to consult.
She is the queen of trash to treasure. I'll be visiting her brick and mortar space in Castle Rock, CO next week (while she's in NE visiting relatives, so I won't actually get to meet her in person). Here's a link to her blog:

  18. Yeah. I'd like to know how to fix the veneer, too.
I have several pieces of "old" furniture I've bought. I need to work on them.
