1. BLUE - This doesn't surprise me. In color theory blue is associated with calm things, like the sky and ocean, so it would help folks relax their minds before dozing off. People from the article who have blue walls got an average of 7 hours and 52 minutes of sleep per night (I want!). Speaking of wanting things, this room:
3. GREEN - I would not have guessed that green would come in behind yellow. It's known for being soothing and is often used in hospitals because it gives the impression of time passing more quickly. The folks in the study averaged 7 hours and 30 minutes of sleep when they had green walls.
I also want to point out that I totally have a problem because as soon as I saw this picture I was like, "ALL OF THAT IS IKEA!"
On the flipside, there are some colors that aren't great for sleeping. And these are huge bummers, I'm going to warn you now.
GRAY - I learned about color theory earlier this year, and gray isn't exactly associated with happy things. It represents boredom, uncertainty, and secrecy, among others. It's trendy now but based on color theory, anyway, I can see why it wouldn't be great in a bedroom. Sad, because I really like it.
BROWN/CREAM/WHITE - Apparently this group is associated with people who work too much. The article actually said that people who use one of those colors work from bed several times a week. I was about to scoff until I remembered that our walls are tan and we totally do that. (Hm. Maybe this is more accurate than I thought...) This room is pretty, though:

Oh wow this is so interesting! I am SO bummed about gray! We rent so ours is white. All if this makes sense!
ReplyDeleteOurs is underneath the roof, so we have white wood panelling with ivory walls. It seems to work best with the little light that we have!
ReplyDeletep.s. can't wait to see your challenge piece :)
I'd never thought about the color of our walls being associated with sleep. Ours are light yellow, but I can't say we get more or less sleep because of them. The gray, beige, tan, white really surprises me as being bad colors for a bedroom. I would think neutrals would be calming.
ReplyDeleteI really like that blue bedroom!
Our are a dark grayish blue, and I love that it feels kind of like a cozy cave (if there is such a thing??). Love each one of these rooms that you picked out! I can't imagine having a hard time sleeping in any of them :)
ReplyDeleteSuch an interesting topic! Our bedroom is dark turquoise blue and white. We didn't pick the colors, but we love them.
ReplyDeleteHm. Most of my bedroom is a very light grey, but with a warm purple accent wall behind my bed. Maybe I just like being moody?
ReplyDeleteOurs is a very pale blue. It used to be a weird deep pink when we moved in...it felt like a cave. The pale blue is a huge improvement!
ReplyDeletei love the warm grey or the light blues. my room now is WHITE WHITE WHITE... i hate renting!

The room in the first picture is my favourite, I like the white and blue combo. The colour on three of my walls is named milk (very, very light grey) and the other one is named powder, which is a very light pink.
ReplyDeleteI am a renter so our walls are white but my dream would be black walls. The darker the room is the better I sleep.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting post!! Our walls are tan (3/4) and a horrible bright minty green (1/4). DH insists on green, but I can't deal with the bright minty version, so I am hoping we can compromise on a grayed down softer green. I hate to paint, but it needs to happen.
ReplyDeleteOur bedroom is mint green. Mr. Hausfrau picked the colour on a whim one day and painted. I quite like it. I DO wish I could better keep up with the laundry, which really seems to ruin the ambiance in our space, beings strewn here and there and everywhere...
ReplyDeleteGrey! Oops, guess I'm in trouble. ;) I just can't into colored walls for some reason. I actually have been thinking about painting it white to lighten it up a bit, but maybe then I'd work too much in there?! I do remember my dorm room walls being a pale blue, but I've always opted for grey or white since then.
ReplyDeleteNever have associated wall colors to sleep patterns, really interesting! Our walls are a minty green, with two darker mint accent walls. I've been thinking of painting again, but it just seems like so much work!
ReplyDeleteWell, isn't that interesting! Mine are three colors of stormy blue - kind of a little green tint, but not much. LOL and I sleep just fine.
ReplyDeleteI actually have read the exact opposite of yellow, that it contributes to feelings of nervousness and anxiety. It can also make people feel active and busy, which is why it's often found in fast food restaurants and places where they want people to eat quickly and move on.
ReplyDeleteBut also, color is so subjective. A color that is soothing to one person can be sickening to another. Plus, there are so many different tones within each color. For example, a purple- or green-tinted grey always looks pretty hideous to me. But a neutral or slightly blue-tinted or even a warm grey is like the prettiest thing ever.
Really it just depends on what study you happen to read--they all have different results--but generally blues and greens are considered good bedroom colors because they are calming and relaxing, and warmer reds and yellows are better in active areas of the house (kitchen, family room, etc.). But again, it all depends on tone, hue, etc.
We are starting to think about bedroom colors, but it will be a while before we're ready to paint. Right now our walls are still painted the off-white/beige color they were when we bought the house. But we never do work in bed, like literally has never happened once.
AGH! we went from blue to cream..... and I do work too much! But I've never worked in bed unless it was the last quiet room in the house during the DAY!
ReplyDeletebtw project guest bedroom is a challenge but hopefully close to being finished this weekend. finish coat of paint is next and the blinds just shipped. Good call on spraying the wicker furniture - amazing results.
Hint: that first picture you posted!!!!
Very interesting!! My walls are white and unfortunately, thats because I live in apartment building. I think we can paint them but as you know they are vaulted and I'm not up for that twice since we'd have to paint them and then repaint them when we move.
ReplyDeleteI really like blue for walls. I do think of it as being soothing and relaxing. I also would love the idea of walls too. I think of green as soothing and earthy.
Whew. Seriously! I'm so glad I'm not the only one with the Ikea problem. ;)
ReplyDeleteI did not know that about gray, I really wanted to paint my bedroom gray. Very interesting info, maybe yellow would be a nice choice.

I painted my bedroom gray a few months ago, and my sleep has sucked recently but I blame that on stress. I don't know though, maybe if my bedroom was blue I'd be able to de-stress? I've had a sage green room before that was always so relaxing to be in, and I miss it like crazy!
