Basement Reveal

It's not 100% done--we still need to switch the baseboards and paint the walls--but whatever. You get the idea. NEW BASEMENT! (Just to warn you now, there will be a lot of caps lock today.) Aaaah!

It's funny how quickly my brain forgot the old space. Now that everything is painted white, it feels like it's always been this way. Wrong, because here's how it looked when we first moved in:

And then even after we got some new furniture things were still all weird in here:

But then the basement flooded, and although we honestly could have saved that ugly yellow-beige carpet if we wanted to, we took it as a sign that it was time for a major overhaul. That foundation crack was FATE. We actually put off doing some work in one of the bathrooms so we could gussy this up instead, and now I'm glad we did.

It makes me so happy. Not only does it look bigger and brighter, but it's been straight up euphoric to do all of the work yourself and see it turn out so well. It's EXACTLY what I wanted. Hubsey digs it, too, but he didn't have as clear of an idea from the beginning. I don't want people to think it's just "my" room because he was involved with the whole process. I painted, he laid the flooring. We both dealt with the rug and moved furniture. I did the accessorizing, he grilled the hot dogs. Teamwork.

Here's the full rundown for ya (with rounded prices):

>> We painted the built-ins, trim, and support pole using Benjamin Moore Advance in plain old white. No tint at all, just straight outta the can. Paint, primer, and teensy foam rollers: $100

>> The floors are Swiftlock laminate from Lowes in Fireside Oak, and we literally got them for 50% less by installing them ourselves. Flooring, underlayment, and related supplies: $700

>> The area rug is from West Elm and because we weren't able to buy it in-store, we ended up paying for shipping and a delivery surcharge. So that made it $240 instead of $183, which is kind of lame but not the end of the world.

>> We splurged on patching the giant drywall holes (from the foundation repair) and had a local handyman do it for $350.

>> Wall paint hasn't been purchased yet, but Olympic is $25 per gallon. The new baseboards will be around $70. I would also like to do something about that black hole of a coffee table, but that's still TBD.

That's a hair under $1,500 for the whole remodel! Can I call it that? I think I'm going to. We clocked a lot of hours down here.

Oh yeah, remember that blue kitchen table I was working on? It didn't stay in the kitchen. It was up there for about 24 hours and I decided I needed a larger tabletop for the 9,000 things I have near me when I work in the mornings. So now it's down here and it solves our extra seating problem. Plus, a spot for snacks! Boom!

Okay, two more. Aaaah!

I took this one before the new drywall was up. Ssssh!

I'm so proud of us. I can't wait to start something else.

Anybody else doing some summer redecorating? Or painting trim? Have you done a big overhaul like this?

  1. That is amazing. It looks like such a happy, bright space. I am continually amazed at what painting things white can do. (The lady we bought the house from came back to look at it- a la Moving Up but without Doug Wilson and snarky comments- and she was like, it's so bright in here!) The cabinets look awesome and were totally worth all the effort.

You guys should be so proud of yourselves. I know just what you mean about being so happy to see it transform and know you redid it all on your own. It almost makes me want to redo something. Maybe not. :) Great job!!!!!

  3. Gorgeous job. Currently I'm trying to figure out what I want to do in my house, which has warm colored tile and lots of natural wood. I have some black furniture - including the identical black shelf that you have! - and I'm starting to think that painting a couple of walls gray might be the trick. I like the contrast you have with the black furniture, gray couch, and warm, wood flooring. What color are your walls going to be?

  5. Amazing, so light and spacious. I want to change things up at my home, but I have no idea where to start. I hope that when I get started, the result would be half as good as this!

  6. What an amazing transformation! You guys did a fantastic job! I really love the rug and the thrown pillows-- great accent pieces. We started a bit of a basement project a few weekends ago. We've been wanting to put in built-ins on these bump out ledges that run across the entire side of the house. That is super expensive though, so we went to Ikea and got some white cabinets for about $250 total, some paint, and a few other supplies and Andrew created fake built-ins. We still need to finish painting, and we are also hoping to tear out the nasty carpet that is gross from the dog (and was already gross when we moved in) and put in bamboo flooring. Just having the cabinets in the space right now already makes the entire space look totally different! I'll have to start documenting on the blog soon.

    1. Thank you! :-) IKEA is such an awesome resource. My friends think I'm weird for going there all the time, but why would you overpay somewhere else without even checking?! I can't wait to see your room! The shelving sounds very cool.

  11. Nice! I love the new floor! My man and I are searching for a place (a process made slightly more difficult than usual by him being literally underwater right now) and wood (or at least laminate) floors are one of our not really willing to compromise points.
Congrats on your awesome new basement!

    1. Thanks! We still need to paint the walls, put the new baseboards on, and hang some art. But all of the major stuff is done, so it's close enough to share, haha.

    1. We actually haven't decided yet! I kind of like the beige-y color the previous owners left, but I'm wondering if we should do something new...

  25. That must have been so much work! How long did it take to do the floor? I love your new rug too. What color are you thinking about for the walls? We haven't done a major overhaul anywhere, but are doing things bit by bit in each room. We actually just had some guys come today to get a second estimate on some repairs for the chimney. Gah, so expensive. Might be a while before we can buy more furniture/rugs/etc.
