For the record, I was thinking about Lucky Charms when I wrote this, which explains the play on "magically delicious" in the title here. I am one for deep thought.
When I was visiting my grandma a couple of weeks ago, she asked me how I would describe my decorating style. And I was like, "Uh..." which is always a great way to answer when you're in design school. The truth is, the items I like depend on the space. I'm feeling extra mid-century right now because we live in a house from that era. But if our next home is an old Victorian, then I'll be on the prowl for things that fit a grand space. It just depends.
One thing I did manage to express, though, was that I hate fussy furniture. It doesn't matter what era it's from, as long as it has clean lines, I'm in. Likewise with accessories and art. Don't overdo it. I saw this room on Pinterest a few weeks ago, and although it has a healthy dose of mid-century, there are a lot of eclectic elements going on, too. How you doin'?
It has a lot of neutrals and streamlined furniture, but it feels so happy with the other elements. Yet balanced thanks to the blacks. Basically, I want to transport it into my house. That technology isn't around yet (we're waiting, science) so we'll just have to buy some stuff if we want the look:
>> The sofa is a personal favorite of mine from Room & Board ($1,500). We learned the hard way that if you don't pay for a quality sofa, you get a piece of crap that smushes in on itself after a few months. So if you're going to spend real money on anything, get. a. great. sofa. Your friends with scoliosis will thank you.
>> If you have sweaty palms now, know that the supporting cast of furniture is less expensive. The side cabinet ($220) will give you a place to stash extra magazines or board games, and the coffee table ($98) will get a hit of bright pink paint to make it stand out. Painting can be done for around $15 if you decide to go the spray paint route.
>> Since there's a lot going on in the space between the pillows, artwork, and pink table, keeping the lighting simple is key. The black and gold lamp ($75) adds a bit of sophistication to an otherwise casual room.
>> The contrasting pillows add both pattern ($34) and texture ($35) to the space, which just goes to show that you don't need a ton of color to have a visually interesting room (neutrals for the win!).
>> Extra seating in a small space can be tricky, but poufs like the one here ($90) are fun to sit on and doesn't take up much room. This one is from Etsy, which earns it an extra gold star.
>> Finding a colorful map isn't hard--I see a lot of them on Ebay and around thrift stores--but the example here ($23) is made up of a bunch of stars and I thought that would be fun in a room like this.
If you were to rock all of the items here, you'd get a whole new living room for just under $2,100. Which, considering the sofa is $1,500 of that money, that's pretty impressive. Are you a fan of a playful room like this? What's your favorite part? Are you a believer in high-quality seating, too? What about that pink coffee table, could you do it?
Yeah definitely a fan of higher quality seating, but right now we have a sofa from IKEA and it's surprisingly durable. Also, the frame is what's most important. Foam cushions for the seats and back can be replaced fairly inexpensively, so it pays to buy a couch that has zippered cushions on the back and seats. It will make it feel like new again. That's what we had planned to do with our previous couch from CB2 that was about 5-6 years old, just replace the cushions, but then one of the legs was broken during the move so we just decided to buy a new one from IKEA. The IKEA upholstery is completely removeable and washable (arms, back, everything) and since we plan on getting a dog soon, we thought that was a very attractive feature. I don't like the look of slipcovers, even ones tailored to fit neatly, I never have really, so the fact that we don't have to do that, but still get the same benefit was a clencher. And it looks nice too!
ReplyDeleteYou will probably think this is funny, but I did a res. project once in school and spec'd a sofa from Room&Board and my teacher flagged it with a question "quality?" Since we had no budget for the project I changed it out for a high-end sofa and she was happier. I personally have never tried out a Room&Board sofa, have you?
I'm very picky about where my butt goes, and in my experience, cost does not equal comfort. The chair we are returning right now was not cheap but was poorly constructed nonetheless. So back it goes.
And the pink coffee table...yes, absolutely. :)
We actually have a Room & Board store near us, and we went there looking for a couch before we moved. The quality is amazing for the price (at least that's what I got from being in the store). We ended up getting a sofa from Macy's instead, which I totally regret now because after only a few months the cushions started to get really sunken in. I know they can be replaced, but I wouldn't want to do it twice a year. :-( Lesson learned.
DeleteLove the finds!
ReplyDeleteI like most of it! I would probably go a full red on the coffee table rather than pink. And switch the map out for a painting or print. But I like the poof and the couch and the mix of everything. :)
ReplyDeleteWe are a little more toned down and the eclectic-ness of the room might drive me a little batty, but that's just me. We tend to look for a cottage-y/craftsman/artisan style, if I had to try and name it. I love softer tones and neutrals and while I love a good pop of color, I would probably stray more towards brighter blue, green, or purple (bold, I know). BUT I LOVE both of those sofas. I want the one in the inspiration photo to appear in my living room. Work on that transport thing, will you? :)
ReplyDeletelove this style and your design style! The only think I'd do differenlty is play in orange instead of pink. (hubby would not be ok with pink - but I oculd get away with orange.) Any ideas on where the rug could be from? I LOVE thost antique looking rugs, but can only find antique ones... and they are a bagillion dollars...
ReplyDeleteI need a new sofa and loveseat, so that sofa is just staring at me! Great post.
