2013 Goals: Second Quarter

I meant to do this in June, but we all know what happens when I try to plan something for the blog. At the beginning of the year I made a list of goals to work on in 2013. I don't call them "resolutions" because that feels more like a pass/fail situation, and I think that as long as you're improving, you can give yourself a high-five. Here's a recap of where I am halfway through the year:

1. Exercise everyday. I think setting the bar at "everyday" was a mistake. Sometimes you're busy or tired and a workout just isn't going to happen. That being said, I've been way better about this since the weather warmed up. I'm back to exercising 3-4 times a week and I feel a lot better overall.

2. Drink more water. Since I've been exercising more, the water intake has increased, too. I even bought a cute little bottle for my hikes.

3. Read two books a month. I've taken a bit of a foray into magazine territory (Country Living is my new fave), but books are holding their ground. Currently it's World War Z, and then I might do Emma by Jane Austen.

4. Reach 900 sales in the Oh Nostalgia Wedding Collection and 300 in Oh Nostalgia. I have totally abandoned ship with this one. Let's chat about that in goal number five...

5. Overhaul both product lines. New items have been made for both shops, but I'm turning my focus toward wholesale orders instead of spontaneous Etsy purchases. I'm a year and a half into my design program now, and school requires more of my creative energy every semester. I hadn't realized how much of myself went into my Etsy business until I was too drained to do it anymore. Wholesale orders are MUCH easier to plan, mainly because I only have 25-ish items on my line sheets for people to choose from. I've found a couple of new places to sell my items, and it's been going really well so far, but I'd like to have two more up my sleeve before I make any major decisions about what to do with the shops.

6. Paint the cabinets. The basement cabinets are done, but the kitchen hasn't been started. After doing all of that work downstairs we wanted a little break before tackling another big project. I might work on it during Summer Break 2.0 in August, but I would also be okay waiting until the fall.

7. Plant stuff in the garden. Not only planted, but a few peppers have grown! The basil died, and one of the tomato plants is looking a little... iffy... but the jalapenos and banana peppers are rocking it out.

8. Stick to a budget. Yes and no. We still don't have an official list of categories we add up every month, but with some total buzz-kill projects popping up (broken sewage ejector pump, rotting deck boards) we've been scaling back on the fun stuff we normally do. I'll give us a solid B.

9. Focus more on interior design. Since I'm hitting the books full-time in the fall, I'd definitely say interior design has become Priority 1. The design consultations are still happening (yay!) and I just helped a friend choose the materials for her upcoming bathroom gut job. Real client, real budget, real timeframe! Aaaaah!

10. Do more DIY projects. The basement overhaul was basically one giant DIY project, so I'm going to count it.

**Bonus** Figure out the furniture situation in the family room (and preferably put it in there). Done and done. It's not the original furniture layout I thought I wanted, but now we have seating for 4 additional people. Funny how things work out when you stop looking at armchairs.

Did you set any goals for 2013? How are they going? Anybody else rocking some half-dead plants in their yard? What about getting stuff done around the house?

  1. I can't believe we've started the second half of the year! I think it's great you're wholesaling your jewelry line!
Looks like you've got the next six months all planned :)
I like the look of that store front!

  2. I like your approach to your goals and it looks like you're still on point for the most part. I'm facing a simliar situation with my Etsy shop. I'm kind of sick of it lol! I just need to re-evaluate what to do with the jewelry as my time has gotten limited too.

  3. I'd say you've done pretty well! I'm impressed! In all honesty, for someone who spent most of her life planning everything in major detail, I've become much less goal oriented in my 30s. I wouldn't say I've transformed completely to a 'go with the flow' type, but I have definitely become more of the type who thinks up overall goals and lets the rest fall into place. Reading your list and seeing how well you've done makes me realize it might be time to get back to more concrete lists. I need to find a happy medium. :)

  4. I'd like to say we are finished with our bathroom remodel, but I think we still have a couple weeks left to go... It's going to be a major improvement when it's done though, and I'm totally going to be ready for a hiatus after that, on big home projects... but I can't wait to get back to my normal crafty routine though. I feel like I have all these plans for improving my shops right now, but the mess of the remodel is sort of in the way and it's left my creative juices not flowing much...

We have some dead plants in our yard too, not to worry. :) And our grass dies every summer, drives me batty. Full sun from sun up to sundown and horrible soil. Someday we'll bring new soil in and reseed the lawn but it just goes on the list of DIY's to do around here.

You are so right that wholesale, or larger orders like that, can be a major benefit to your business. I started out making soap and jewelry and eventually got into doing soap favors for weddings and such, and have noticed a really nice increase in the overall numbers for my shop this way... I'm spending less on supplies and making more money per order. Perfect. That's the way it should be.

Can't wait to see your design ideas for the bathroom project you're working on. Picking out the materials is so much more fun, than doing the work. ha! :) xo.

  5. I'm impressed by the exercising part! I only manage to get up from the couch two times a week. In my defense, I do go to work by bike. I love the look of that store. Adorable! Keep up the good work.

  6. The goal of exercising every day is a big one. I set a goal for 3-4 times a week with plans of increasing, but I'm still at 3-4 times a week! Go figure.
You're doing a great job overall. Keep it up, and it's awesome about you helping your friend with the bathroom gut job (wooohoooo! So excited for you, and I hope you'll be posting about it.).

  7. Interesting! I've been feeling the same about Etsy vs. wholesale. I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Change is so hard for me when it comes to my business, but I know it's the only way to achieve the "big picture" goals I have. Good luck, and keep us updated on your goals! xo JA

  8. Congrats on all of your accomplishments! I can relate to the ongoing difficulty of finding a balance with everything. Sometimes something has to give. Keep up the great work!

  9. I love the look and feel of both your blog and your shops! I make lists and then if I do something that wasn't on the list, I add it - like you did with your Bonus resolution :) Keep up the great work!

  10. I love reading about people's goals. It always inspires me...I did a halfway checkup on my 13 in 2013 list a month ago...I'm not doing too badly!

  11. I didn't know you have a wedding collection!!! I might be able to help you reach your goal for both stores :)

  12. I don't know how you juggle it all, Paige! Congrats on the wholesale orders.
I'd give myself a dink slip on exercise goals, but Etsy is pretty much on target.

On the gardening front: My carrots didn't survive the heat, and I only have one green pepper plant left standing, but tomatoes, raspberries, lettuce, peas, beans, squash and pumpkins are doing OK. Sweet corn is recovering from DH's mow over. I don't have a green thumb.

  13. Yay for growing things! We've not had a lot of luck with our plants outside. With the bunnies and the massive amounts of rain, whatever hasn't been eaten has drowned I think.
Also, don't feel like you have to rush to do the kitchen and everything on the house. You guys are gonna be there for a long time, and it's ok to take a break from house projects and just enjoy the summer when you aren't busy with other stuff. :)

  14. Sounds like you're doing great with your goals this year! I need to take a look at mine and see which ones need a little more work. I'd say I'm doing okay on 70% of my goals.

  15. Whoa! You are amazing! That's quite a lot of accomplishments even if you didn't fulfill everything you planned.
You can plant basil again and again this Summer.

  16. I did set up some goals and this post actually reminded me I should do an update. It's always nice to get some goals complete and even add new ones to the list.

  17. It sounds like you are moving along on your goals and revising them as you go. One of my big goals this year was to go to the gym 5 days a week and I am thrilled to say I have achieved this goal. Everyday I get up and go, and everyday I am glad I did.
