Affordable Style: Erin's Living Room

A friend from high school reached out to me about a month ago with an exciting design challenge: she and her husband are moving into a new house and the family room left by the previous owners is not. her. jam. At all. There are two fire engine red accent walls. (Opposite from each other, I should add. Yowza!) And a weirdly located fireplace. And a vaulted ceiling. The space has a lot of potential--it's open to the dining room and a partially separated kitchen--but some of the quirky aspects left her stuck. She wanted something with a lot of neutrals (word!) and streamlined furniture, with bits of playful color and pattern to keep things from feeling too stuffy. Blues and grays are her favorites.

That sounds just like my house. I knew we were pals for a reason. :-) Let's see the mood board!

>> My friend and her husband already have seating for the room (a sofa and two chairs), which is a huge score. They only wanted to replace their tables and TV console, and that gives a little wiggle room to the budget. The coffee table ($130) and end table ($53) are both from Target and allow for plenty of basket/box storage underneath. I suggested looking for a cool dresser on Craigslist to use as the TV stand and she already found one.

>> As for those red walls, I suggested painting most of the room a warm neutral and making the fireplace wall the accent. You don't need two accent walls. Slate Blue by Bejnamin Moore would really pop against their white trim.

>> Speaking of that fireplace, it's over to one side riiiight between two windows. There are white mini-blinds up there now, but I suggested dark bamboo shades from Home Depot (from $29) to add a little texture. The spacing of the room doesn't really allow for the TV to go above it, so instead I suggested a mirror to bounce some light back into the area. The beveled edge ($67) and starburst ($40) options are also from Target.

>> The TV and dresser would go on the wall next to the fireplace. Since the surface is pretty big (remember that vaulted ceiling?), I suggested blending the TV into part of a gallery wall to eat up some of the negative space. Here's a great example of that idea.

>> As for the accessories, I stuck with cooler tones in fun patterns to play off the blue paint and balance out all of the warmer tones from the sofa and wood furniture. Chevrons are best in small doses, so a throw pillow is a perfect place for that action. Any of these would be super in the room. From left to right: West Elm ($31), Etsy, ($26), and Society6 ($20).

My friend is still finishing up the space, but when she's done I'll do a follow-up with pictures. Woo!

Have you encountered any, um, interesting design decisions left by previous owners? Or maybe you also have a teensy corner fireplace? How'd you deal with the quirks at your house?

  1. Do we get pictures of the completed room??? I'd love to see it. Our interesting quirk that stands out is the grass cloth wallpaper in the living room. It was so dark and we were so happy to see it go. Oh, and the "cork" accent wall in the dining room. Yup.

    1. She's not done with everything yet, but when she is I'll do a follow-up! I'm eager to see it, too.

  2. Wow, two red walls? I bet that's going to take a lot of primer! Love the idea of a mirror over the fireplace.

    1. Sadly, no! I saw the real estate listing, but that was taken offline pretty quickly. She didn't snap any herself before she started working.

  5. Red walls? I really wonder what the inspiration for THAT was? LOL
Grays and neutrals are some of my favorites, so I'm really excited to see the "after" photos. =0)

  7. Sounds lovely!
Our house was straight from the mid-1950s when I moved in, with the later additions of pink carpet over warped hardwood floors. The only solution was a complete gut and remodel. Unfortunately, it still isn't done and Hubby chose a palette of three shades of white for the walls. But it's still such a huge improvement. :)

  8. Even though blue is one of my favorite colors, I tend to lean on greens when decorating, but you're totally inspiring me to try more blue. I love neutrals and gray tones also, so this really appeals to me. Love it. ♥

  9. love your ideas! can't wait to see the photos!
Slate blue sounds like a great color.
I have a 2 story family room with a fireplace placed (thankfully) in the middle of a wall. and thankfully it's a wall without windows. We've debated for a long time about what to do with the space above the fireplace. Right now I have a lot of vertical branches extending upwards to make a woodland scene of sorts. We've thought about taking photos of the woods (our backyard) and framing and hanging a selection of them, or perhaps family photos, or a mix. I think that is a somewhat awkward space.

    1. Do you have a TV in that room? I think putting the set above the fireplace could work in your situation, since it's centered on one of the walls. If that's not an option, what about one larger piece of art?

  10. I'm starting to love blue a lot when it comes to decoration. I've spotted some navy blue paint for an accent wall that can make dark furniture look elegant, but I'm still pondering about it.

  15. Yay this is me!!! Lol I'm famous!! Anyway....the paint is going up tomorrow Im very excited! We chose Valspar Sharkfin which is really close to the BM color above. We scored a really cool gray dresser and I found these pillows super cheap at Garden Ridge (pillow Mecca!!!!) and I'm in love. They aren't chevron but I think they will do the job! I'm going to use some slate blue and white accents and try to find something else chevron for the room. I'm using a different mirror because it came with the dresser and is soooo me. Now I just have to figure out the mantle. Some metallic pillar holders and pillar candles? I'm liking the mercury glass ones on pottery barn but not the price. I'm so cheap!
