I made it a point to take more pictures on this trip, so I have some of those for you today.

Central Park - without people! |

Art Nouveau architecture in New York |
>> I've been to New York a handful of times now, but this was my first time going to Central Park. It was kind of funny to be wandering amidst a bunch of trees, and turn a corner and see 10 buildings. I'm so used to being in the arboretum where I barely see any people. I did appreciate the number of hot dog vendors at my disposal, though.
>> This trip was epic in terms of meeting up with people. Not only did we see both sides of our family (including a brand new nephew!), but we saw Hubsey's college roommate and I got to meet Marilyn from Pulp Sushi (who was just as cool in person as she is online). How's that for efficient?
>> Fun fact: when going from New York to L.A., we had to get up at 4 a.m. Eastern time. Then we were awake for about 20 hours. Yowza.
>> I'm one of those people who's greatly impacted by my surroundings, and there is a massive difference between spending time in New York and relaxing in California. Even though I was technically on vacation in New York, I still felt this strange urge to go be productive. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I couldn't really chill until I left the city.

The view from my brother-in-law's neighborhood in L.A. |
>> Interestingly, even though we were on both coasts, we didn't go to the beach. (Well, we saw the beach in L.A., but we were on a bridge.) We didn't even pack our suits! In my defense, Pacific water is cold.
>> We found a new favorite restaurant. If you're ever in L.A. head over to Santa Monica and try The Misfit. It was the perfect combination of healthy and indulgent, and they use a lot of local and organic ingredients--which are the tastiest. Ever had fried lobster sliders? HEAVEN.
>> New babies are so snuggly. I had kind of forgotten since our older nephew is two and Very Independent now. He taught himself how to use Netflix, which was a surprise to all of us. Little brother mastered having the hiccups and looking adorable.

Japanese Tea Gardens at Golden Gate Park |
>> Instead of staying in a hotel in San Francisco, we tried something called Airbnb. It's a website where people can rent out apartments or parts of houses to travelers. SO GREAT. Cannot recommend it enough! We stayed in a loft in a neighborhood called SoMa, but there were a lot of options all over the city. It was cheaper than staying in a hotel (word!), plus we had the owner to ask about food recommendations, directions, etc. We're looking into it for Paris in the fall.
>> This trip has made us realize once and for all that we may not live in Chicago forever. Not that we have ants in our pants to leave (calm down, Mom!), but spending time in other cities back-to-back got the wheels turning.
>> Also! Cities are great because there are no bugs. I literally did not see one spider the entire time we were gone. And to think, I was so eager to move out of that condo and into this house! If only I'd known! /insert a dramatic hand to the forehead

Bay Bridge in San Francisco |
Overall, it was a great, if tiring, vacation. We've decided that we're not really cut out for bi-coastal jaunts and have crazy respect for those of you who are. Coming home felt like an iron man triathlon, and then we collapsed into sleep for about 14 hours. In the future we'll have to tackle one coast at a time.
Have you taken any trips this summer? Anything lined up for the fall? What's your favorite place to visit? Raise your hand if you've done the New York-to-California thing!
Fantastic photos, and it looks like you had a great time! I'm sure you're glad to be back.
ReplyDeleteI love Central Park. Hubby went to college on Long Island so we'd take the train in sometimes and wander the city, and the park is so pretty and so HUGE! I have never been to California but everyone I know who lives/lived there loves it. Maybe I'll visit some day.
As for feeling the itch, I know my husband would like us to wind up in the South where things are less pricey but all my family is here so I know I would have the mom-freak-out too. In the end, you have to do what's best for you!
Love these photos! Again it was so great meeting you too ♥. Central Park is one of my favorite places because it's true, you can always find a quiet spot somewhere to relax. So glad you got to check it out. I'm hoping for a getaway some time this Fall but we gotta see what the job(s) say about that. :)
ReplyDeleteWow, what a trip! I have jet lag just thinking about it :) I definitely want to try Airbnb on my next trip, I've heard so much about it lately. Now I'm wanting to visit New York again, and California has been on my list for the longest time!
ReplyDeleteI bet that was tiring! I tried Airbnb before - it was a nice apartment with kitchenette right in the middle of the main shopping street. One day I'd like to visit Central Park. That is so cool you got to meet Marilyn!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a super trip! I would love to visit New York, it's very high on my to-go list. The origami looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool trip! I've been to NYC for about 4 hours total and I've never really been to California. You're right - those are some mad origami skills!
ReplyDeleteWow, sounds like a great time! I get tired from travel, too, so I don't know if I could handle all of that in one super trip. Wonderful photos!
ReplyDeleteYay for vacation. BIGGER Yay for NYC. in midst of trying to arrange quick getaway for our fix of ny. fingers crossed because now you really made me homesick.
ReplyDeleteWow, what an awesome trip! I can't imaging tackling all that in one trip!
ReplyDeleteYour photos are great and I'm so glad you two had a fun time :)
Great photos! Sounds like you managed to have some fun despite the hectic travel schedule. Love the origami piece. No wonder you had jet lag! Yikes!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific trip and great pics. I love the Japanese tea garden in San Fran.
ReplyDeleteI'm ashamed to say I don't even know how to use Netflix (don't have it).
I'm in the Chicagoland area too. We'll have to meet up.
I've never done a coast to coast jaunt like that either, and I'm sure that it would not be for me. I really enjoyed your pictures and look forward to seeing more! It's neat that you were able to do so much in such a short period of time.
ReplyDeleteEven for all of the crazy cross-country traveling I've done with Robbie and the band, I've never done a coast to coast trip like that in 10 days! I think it sounds absolutely incredible (although I'm sure you're exhausted!). You visited almost all of my favorite cities. I actually had an apartment lined up to move to L.A. before I ended up back here in the Chicago area, and then about 6 months after moving here, I have plans to move to NYC. Clearly, I didn't do either, but I still love visiting both places. And San Francisco is my all time favorite. Love the pictures and hearing about your adventures!
ReplyDeletewow! what a whirlwind! Love the pics you shared Paige. Bi-coastal trips! yikes!
ReplyDeleteI had back to back trips earlier in the summer and it just about did me in. I can't imagine doing what y'all did! I'm too old!
glad you're home safe and sound!

Love all these photos and hearing about your trip! Also, hate to ruin it for you, but cities do have spiders, we had them in all of our apartment buildings in DC. And also, cities have mice. Usually. Lots and lots of mice. So there's that. Haha.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm glad to hear you had a good airbnb experience. I've heard good things and really bad things. Anyone who's ever lived in an apartment in a city knows all the problems and benefits those apartments tend to have, and you are sort of taking all those on for your stay, for better or worse...like noisy neighbors, leaky pipes, A/C or heat that doesn't really work, aforementioned mice, but you will probably also be within walking distance to things you want to do, and it might be cheaper, like you said. Anyway, I'm definitely up for trying it at some point, but I think I will have a better idea than some about what I'm getting myself into.
Also, your cousin is crazy talented. And I had to laugh about your nephew and the netflix. My nephew (when he was 2) had also mastered everything on the ipad and I had to watch him because if I turned around for a second he could be watching something totally inappropriate on netflix or youtube. I didn't want to get in trouble with his parents! Haha. It amazes me that they can learn to do so much even though they can't read yet.
Anyway, glad you had a great trip! And it looks like you had great weather too. :)
efficient?--yes! sounds like fun, though! I've had whirlwindish vacations, too. like traveling up the coast of the western US in 10 or so days, never spending a night in the same place twice. But it was wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThose are some crazy origami skills!
My son is in San Francisco now and will be going to the Japanese gardens.
Love the photos. Sounds like you had a great time in all the cities. I have flown from CT to LA in college and it was a long long flight because we had a layover. I stayed with a friend in a neighborhood called Calabasas, it's one of the wealthier neighborhoods in LA and boy was my friend's house amazing. I loved the surrounding areas of LA but I wasn't a huge fan of LA in general. We did go to the beach and I agree that the water was crazy cold. Just like the Atlantic.
ReplyDeleteAwesome photos! We did VRBO - similar to airbnb where we found an apartment to rent for our 2 week vacation we just returned from. It was so nice to have a home base - we played lots of cards at night and were able to cook breakfast alot and pack our picnic lunches for each of our vineyard trips.
