A Painted House

It was quite the DIY weekend over here. Like I mentioned on Friday, we painted the front of our house (yep, just the front) and replaced the wonky deck boards that were under the old sunroom. Hubsey's parents drove up to help us, which was wonderful because we wouldn't have finished everything in one day without them. Let's just say the stuff on the deck was built REALLY well, and was therefore hard to take apart.

But more on the deck tomorrow. I decided to break the projects into two posts, and since that one has more pictures that aren't sorted yet, you get to see the new paint first!

It's hard to grasp the full effect without seeing a before picture, so here's that ketchup-and-mustard combination for you:

It was really sunny that day, can you tell?

Since we moved in, that color combination has been on my hit list. I guess it technically goes with the architecture of the house (I'm from the 70s, baby, can ya dig it?) but the interior was already so updated that this felt off. Plus, the yellow and red were shades pulled directly from the bricks, and you know how I feel about things that are match-y.

So after a year of waiting, she finally has a new face:

The siding is Sprig of Ivy and the shutters and door are Black Magic, both by Olympic. I wanted a pale green to create some contrast with the bricks (it's across from red on the color wheel), but it had to be really muted because I didn't need this heading to Christmas Town. As for the black, it's actually a very, very dark charcoal gray. A true black would have been a little intense against the green, but I wanted something dark to pull in the light fixture and house number.

You can really see how bold that yellow was. Grooooovy.

The rest of our siding is aluminum (this part is wood for some reason) and now the whole exterior feels more cohesive. Sprig of Ivy blends a little better.

Be sure you come back tomorrow for the deck update! It was intense, you guys.

Have you ever painted the outside of your house? Or painted your door? Now that the front of it is dark, I keep thinking I should do the other side. How was your weekend?

  1. Nice Job!! We had shutters on our house when we lived in IL and I'm sure I helped my mom paint them green. Since I was a painter in college I did my fair share of painting outside doors.

My weekend was spent at class, lounging and homework.

  2. It looks great! Big improvement! We live in a townhouse so we've never touched the outside, but this weekend we're ripping out all the carpet and linoleum on the entire downstairs level and putting in laminate wood flooring. So nervous!

  3. I like what you guys did much better! That yellow reminds me of the color of my kitchen when I first moved in to my current apartment. Even though I'm renting, that was the ONE thing that needed to change. Thankfully the landlord was ok with that. I don't know how that color is good for any kind of wall inside or out.

  4. This looks soooo much better!! Sometimes just a small change makes all the difference!

  5. It looks great! I love the colors you chose. Our house is all red brick with black shutters...I actually would paint the whole house a bright color - you know me - but I know there are a lot of purists out there who think it's a crime to paint brick, especially older brick, and I actually do like the natural colors of our brick. Anyhoo, we have been painting a lot on the inside. And we are getting a new front door at some point in the next couple of months and will be painting that too...not sure what color, but it will have to be something that doesn't clash with the brick. You guys are lucky that you have family within driving distance who can help! :)

  6. I love it so much! The green looks what we put in the big bedroom upstairs in our house. It looks great with the gray/black. You must feel so good about it. We plan on painting our house next summer, though we're going to have it done, I think. We're going to keep the brown/gray color that is is now (just refreshed) but change the deep red accents to black. It will be much better.

  7. The outside of our house needs painting -- you can come over anytime.... :D
Yours looks good -- love that sprig of ivy color.

  8. Looks SO good!! Our new house is yellow too (about the same shade as yours was), and Noel keeps telling me it will take me an entire summer to paint it - so I'm definitely using you as an example!

    1. Thanks! We only did the front of our house, though, because the rest is aluminum and you can't really paint that. Good luck with yours! If I had to do the whole house I'd probably hire it out. :-)

  9. It looks great! So much lighter and more modern. I'm so thankful that we have a brick house and won't ever have to worry about painting the exterior. I can't wait to see the deck progress.

  10. Looking good--and what an improvement! Oh, but I loathe painting . . .

  11. Nice! It looks so much more sophisticated now. My only exterior painting experience is repainting the old family farmhouse the same white it's always been.

  12. It looks awesome, great job!

I live in a building of apartments, so I never get to pick the color we paint it. Actually here were I live if you want to paint you can't really pick the colors if you have a house either: you have to go to the town hall and they'll tell you the three or four colors you can pick from, and you have to pick one of these.

  13. WHAT an improvement!!! Had to laugh at your apt "ketchup and mustard" description of the old color combo. You had a BUSY weekend!!!!

  14. It looks so fresh! I love the dark accents. I don't mind to do some painting, but I really don't like all the work that needs to be done before the real painting part can begin.

  15. I love the dark green door with the light green siding. And the black is a nice touch to finish everything off.
I bet that deck was a pain since it had to be double strong to hold the sun room!

I have two walls in my studio from this weekend!

  16. We are tackling an entire house paint job ourselves. It will likely take more than a year.... (we're never home!) but we can't exactly afford to pay someone for a scope so big. We are almost 50% scrapped on the back side - hoping to paint that side before winter! Maybe we'll finished before this time next year :-/

  17. Painting your shutters black was a good idea. Have you thought of painting your window and door frames black as well? Don't get me wrong, but I think your new exterior color, Pale Green, needs complimentary color for it to look a little bit lively; another color that will fit those bricks.
