Removing the first panel.
We took Labor Day literally this year (we called it Demo Day, actually) and had some friends and family over to help with the destruction. It was about 5-ish hours of on-and-off work thanks to some rain delays, but it wasn't too bad.

Whew! Okay.
Once we got down to the subfloor, we stopped, and it would end up being a really good thing we did. Does that sound foreboding? It should.
Two weeks later, Hubsey's parents came back and it was time to get that plywood out of the way. This should have been a fairly straightforward process, but after painting the front of the house for an hour, my mother-in-law and I wandered into the backyard to see this:
Uh oh.
That was all they'd pulled up. Whoever put the wood down thought a nail every inch would be a smart plan.
Stabby!
So. That was a gigantic bummer. And I felt bad. There wasn't much we could do to help them since the nails were really in there; we would have been a lot slower. It took the dudes about four hours to get all of it removed.
If you look closely, you can see the original cement patio.
Then it was time to get the new boards into place. We were originally going to stagger the edge of the hole to help it blend, but wouldn't you know it, the old, original deck screws weren't budging. No thanks, we like being here in your way.
Sawing the boards.
So we decided to F that and just butted them up against the same double-joist. Whatever. If you're going to scrutinize the board pattern on my deck it might be time for a hobby.
They're all the right length!
We still need to patch a couple of rotting boards that are off to the side and then we'll screw everything down. And then we'll need to stain it all the same color. And then maybe we can use it before it snows. I suppose you could call this the home stretch, but realistically I know it'll take two more weekends of work.
On the bright side, we're saving a ton of money! And how many people can say they halfway rebuilt a deck? I do feel kind of cool. What's been going on at your house lately? Any deck stain tips to share? Who else is doing work outside now that it's cooling off?

Wow, what a project! We tore up our smallish deck, and are still in the process of laying the stones now to make a patio. You guys had a much bigger situation on your hands, though, good for you for DIY!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! And like a lot of work! All of our remodeling stuff right now is inside, and much less of a project than this. Can't wait to see the "after" pictures!
ReplyDeleteGood job! Seems like you have way more pull with your hubsey than I have with mine. Mr. Hausfrau would have called a guy to come do the job, then, hands on hip, boss him around. Don't get me wrong, it would be a marriage saver to hire someone in our case ;P
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say, I've got no deck building advice for you. You were smart to wait for the cooler weather!
looks like a great project!...waiting for it to finish!
ReplyDeleteGah! What's with all the nails?! Good for them for sticking with it and getting it done! I mean, I guess they didn't really have much of a choice, but still! Good work. :) I hope the rest of it goes smoothly and you get some time to enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteI am jealous you are getting so much work done around your house. We bought a fixer too, and it needs some of the same work done as yours (okay we just redid the bathroom, but it's not done yet!) and the deck is going to fall apart if we are not careful... and we've painted the front half of our house but not the back half.. .yet... the list just goes on. You guys are kicking a$$ and taking names, I love it, I'm jealous of all your progress! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! Hard work, but awesome! I'm so glad you're going ahead with your projects and getting so much work done around the house Paige!
ReplyDeleteOhhhh I hate projects that take so much more time and effort than you could ever have planned for. Good for you guys for powering through it. I think it's going to come out great, but what a bummer to not just be able to be done with it.
ReplyDeleteYou got a lot accomplished in one weekend!!! My only tips on staining a deck would be DO NOT stain when it is beastly hot outside.
ReplyDeleteWhat a huge project that was! Exhausted just reading about it ;-)
ReplyDeleteThe effort was worth it though...the deck is looking great so far!
Wow, look at those nails! Not only are they really close together, but they're monsters!
ReplyDeleteThe new deck is looking great. I hope the weather stays nice so you can get it finished and still have time to enjoy it this year. I see a cook out in your near future :)
I agree with Edi - those are huge nails! Your deck looks pretty big, too.
ReplyDeleteNice job!!! I've been enjoying our balcony more since it's not deathly hot outside anymore. It's lovely.
