When I was shopping over the weekend, I noticed that a lot of department stores had their coats on sale, so I thought this was a good time to chat about them in case anybody's in the market for a new one. (It's also getting really cold. Sigh.) As you might have guessed from the title, there are 12 of them here! I originally had 16, but I felt like that was probably too much excitement, even for me.
There were a handful of trends I noticed, so let's break it down that way. First, the cape!
Before you ask, yes, these really do keep you warm! I have one (it's not wool, but I can wear it in the fall) and it's not at all like superhero capes that flap behind you in the breeze. I might not wear one of these on the windiest day of the year, but they're great for when you have to get in and out of the car a lot and don't want the bulk of a coat. Plus, they dress up very nicely.
Next, I saw a lot of toggles:
Here's something funny: a lot of the coats with toggle clasps also had hoods. I'm not sure why that is, but I guess if you're going for extra warmth you'll get the bonus of cool clasps to go along with it.
Finally, we have menswear inspiration:
I had to show you the basic neutrals because that's how I roll, but Macy's especially had a lot of classic pea coats in jewel tones. (There was also one the color of an orange road cone.) These are really versatile because they're so simple and you can find them in a lot of lengths. My last two coats have been most similar to this group, except longer, and I love(d) them.
What's your coat like? Are you looking for a new one? Which of these is your favorite? I'm all over that first cape.
Love them! I've always wanted a red coat, I just never got to buy one. But I do love them!
ReplyDeleteGreat title :)
ReplyDeleteI've got a toggle one in grey - and yes, it's got a hood! It's from two seasons back , but it's still my favourite wool coat!
Great picks! My regular winter coat will no longer button over my baby belly so I've been wearing a cute but not-very-warm capelet style number. I'm trying to hold out until after the baby is born so I don't have to buy a new one.
ReplyDeleteYeah for the capes. I have one, more like a cross between a shawl and a blanket, but I absolutely love it.
ReplyDeleteI love the whole bottom row! My current winter coat is a hot pink snowmobile coat. Sure is nice and warm, but not very dressy. I need to get a more "professional" coat :)
ReplyDeleteI have worn toggle coats (some with hoods, some without) and pea coats for years. Maybe it's time for me to branch out. I like the way capes look but I need my arms covered. They don't seem all that practical if you live somewhere where it actually gets cold.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing I've never worn is a puffer coat or those ski type jackets. I'm such a wimp in cold weather, maybe I should get one of those really long puffers that's basically like wearing your comforter in a socially acceptable coat form. ;)
Great finds! My fave is the dark red.
ReplyDeleteVery cute coats! I like a coat that has little feminine details, like faux fur or some frills... not too much, just a little feminine touch! I spend most of my time wearing boring ski-jacket types going to and from work, that when I finally get to dress how I prefer, I like to dress up a bit!
ReplyDeletetoggles are back?
ReplyDeleteI like the menswear inspiration.
I have 2 warm coats: one for everyday in lightish blue and a fancier wool one that I've had for eons. It's teal.
