Pantone Color of the Year: Radiant Orchid

Radiant Orchid - 2014
chair  //  candle  //  shoes  //  dress  //  hair pins  //  pillow  //  nail polish

Let's be real: when I first heard this was Pantone's color of the year, I actually rolled my eyes. I'm not a pink person. (Actually, I might call this a pinky-purple, but that's semantics.) I thought they should have just kept emerald green on the docket for another year, but alas, they changed it and I was sad.

And yet, a funny thing happened on the way to the forum when I started googling around for style ideas. Radiant orchid grew on me. Like a fungus. I suddenly found myself looking at all sorts of cute things that I wouldn't have normally found because I tend to write pink off as something not my taste. (When will I learn?! I think my initial dislike was more about anything replacing emerald green. It was automatically going to be stupid while I got over myself.) I decided to take this color assignment as a personal challenge: find approachable ways to use radiant orchid in real life. I say approachable because I know I'm not the only person who's leery of rocking something this bright. But seriously, if I can get down, anybody can.

My biggest recommendation is to use radiant orchid as an accent. Take a peek at this bedroom:

Here's the thing about using pink: it can skew kind of young. If there's too much of it, your room might end up looking like something for a kid. Which is dope if you ARE decorating for a kid, but probably not what you're after for your own space. This bedroom has the right idea: a couple of radiant orchid accent pillows, with similar pink tones showing up again in the flowers. It's the right amount of color to catch your eye. You can use the pillow/flower combination in a living room, too, or you can bring the color in with a candle, a piece of art, or a fun coffee table book.

As far as clothes are concerned, the same just-a-smidge idea applies.

Using radiant orchid for accessories is the easiest way to go. It'll keep you from looking like a teenager (unless you ARE a teenager, in which case, carry on) and your clothes can stay neutral--and therefore versatile. Yeah, it could be fun to get a pink blazer, but how often are you really going to wear it? And will you still want it next year? My favorite ways to follow color trends are shoes and nail polish, but you can also rock a scarf, a belt, or statement jewelry. If you do want to bust out the big guns and get radiant orchid on some actual clothing, I like the idea of a blouse or a blazer more than, say, a pair of skinny jeans.

So what do you think about radiant orchid? Are you into it? Still not sure? How would you use this color?

  1. I love love radiant orchid. My favourite colour is probably lilac or purple, and this colour seems pretty close! I agree that it's not really a colour that you can paint whole walls with though, it can be a little overpowering with so much pink in it.

  2. I must be a trend setter!! I had a handbag last year that was that color. Fun for summer and into early fall. Guess I'll have to bust it out again this year. :)

  3. I don't really like pink all that much either, but I do like purples. I don't think I'd ever go all out with an entire outfit of radiant orchid, like that dress above, but some cute accessories would do just fine. It's a great shade for spring/summer.

Your outfit choice is very pretty!

  5. I am not really a fan of this color. It's not really purple, it's not really pink - though the brightness reminds me of pepto bismo a bit, so maybe more on the pink side. I'm a designer and I love me some Pantone, but I really don't understand why 'color of the year' is a thing.

  6. I thought there was going to be a riot when they announced the color because everyone was like "ugh purple!" Haha. I actually think it's great that they chose an unusual color to get people to think about it more. A lot of people automatically write off pink or purple because they have bad associations, like teenage whatever, but those are totally cultural and personal, and those associations can keep people from really seeing a color at all, much less seeing it's potential. But of course, it's OK to not like a color also. Just because Pantone says it's the color of the year doesn't mean we have to agree! :)
I personally think it's great. I would wear anything this color. In fact, I think I already have a dress this color. I would dig an orchid sofa too. :)

  7. I agree, always go for the accessories if you want to stay stylish with the new "it" color; however, I love the dress you chose, I would totally rock it!

  8. I kind like this color although I agree that I wish that Emerald was around forever because I love that color. I do agree that perhaps it should be used as more of an accent color than a main color.

  11. I would take emerald green over light purple any day, too, but what can you do? I love both your room and outfit picks with touches of light purple. That's about my speed.

But you know me and pink...I'd totally wear a pink blazer. But make mine hot pink, please...lol :)

  13. I'm looking at it as a fuchsia shade... pinky purple describes it perfect. Not something I would normally pick out of a crowd, but it's growing on me too. I love the neutrals in that bedroom with a hint of lime and this new pinky-purple color. LOL ;)

  14. I saw it as purple - with not a smidge of pink. LOL Love the little hair pins - which do look pink-ish to me. haha
