Bathroom Updates: The Plan

Hubsey and I decided that our big house project for 2014 will be updating the bathrooms. Neither of them are tragic, just not our taste. And since it's silly to gut a room before you even TRY to make it work, we're going to be doing some mid-octave sprucing for now, and saving the heavy lifting for a couple of years down the road (if we need it). Ideally, I'd like to end up somewhere in this general area:

I scrolled back through almost a year of my Pinterest feed and 90% of the bathrooms I had on there were white. Predictable Paige strikes again! I've always loved the classic feel of white bathrooms (and kitchens!), and I'm even more into them now that we have a house with teensy windows and iffy natural light. Of course, some people like to play up the low light in their house with darker colors, and that's totally cool, it's just not my jam.

As for where we are right now, you've seen the upstairs bathroom a couple of times already:

In case things aren't coming through on your monitor, I have to tell you that the tub is almond, the floor is tan with brown grout, and the countertop is purple-veined. PURPLE. The previous owners actually did a nice job making the weirdness blend as well as they could. Props to them. But I feel like blending things I don't like anyway is kind of like saying that dropping a taco on the floor is technically better than not having a taco at all. It's a small victory.

Here's the basement bathroom, which I don't think you guys have seen yet. This one is newer, around 10 years old. Again, it doesn't make me want to poke my own eyes out, but some of the things in here just don't go together. I'm looking at you, oak vanity:

The camera wasn't really picking up on it in the pictures above (I think the overhead light washed things out), but the countertop is actually yellow. You can kind of see it here, but believe me, it's way move obvious in person:

Don't worry, bathrooms, I got your back. Here's the official to do list to make you all purdy again:

-- Get new vanity tops (both)
-- Get new faucets (both)
-- Paint vanity hardware (both)
-- Paint the vanity and trim (basement)
-- Frame out the mirror (basement)
-- Install a new toilet (upstairs)
-- Lighten the grout lines (upstairs)
-- Find a new mirror (upstairs)
-- Add artwork (both)
-- Add practical and adorable accessories (both)

Of course, things might change as we go. And by that I mean that I will probably think of more stuff to add. I'll keep you posted.

What house-y projects have you been doing? Who else is on Team Bathroom? Is there anything about yours you want to change?

  1. We are still on Team Basement since we're still saving for our flooring, but have definitely been talking bathrooms lately. We want to redo all of the tile in our master bath. We have tiny one inch tiles in our shower which makes cleaning a complete nightmare with all of those grout lines. We also have square foot tiles on the floor that have sort of jagged or "aged" looking edges. They are nice tiles, but the grout lines again are a nightmare. We're eventually going to do large linear linen textured tiles. Who knows when that will be though. I'm like you though... I like the idea of a bright space for the bathroom and we'll probably go with whites or very light gray.

  2. I love a white bathroom (as long as it stays white...ugh).
After my studio is finished, the bathroom is next on our list.
The walls in my studio will be gray and Jesse thinks the trim should be wood. I just don't see these two things going together. And like you pointed out...that oak vanity just doesn't fit in that room. Glad I bought white trim :)
Question...I'm having wood floors. Should the baseboard match the rest of the trim? Or match the wood floor?

    1. Ooooh, good question! I think they should be white to match the rest of the trim. It will look really crisp.

    2. We just put in some faux wood flooring and did 8 inch (our house is craftsman) white baseboards, it looks fantastic! I vote white also. ;)

  3. Both of our bathrooms are all white. I feel like it's one of those fool-proof, classic looks. (Although the white throw rug in our downstairs bathroom drives me crazy because it gets so dirty!). Looking forward to seeing your progress and the after shots!

  4. I love your inspiration photos. I totally dig the subway tiles with the black grout. I live in a rental so it's hard, we can't do much but paint :(

    1. But at least you can paint! Some people in rentals can't even do that, which is a huge bummer.

  5. That's quiet a project! I love white bathrooms too, they have both a classy and classic feeling that I really love. Good luck with it, I'm looking forward to follow you in this adventure!

  6. It's amazing what a can of paint and a few new materials can do to a space. I totally think painting the oak and new counter tops will do the trick! As for eventually tearing out that almond tub/shower though, have fun with that! :p

  9. As you point out--the bathrooms aren't tragic, they're just . . . kind of dated and icky in those color choices. But the makeover is so do-able! We'll all be waiting for the progress reports!

  10. We can't do anything with our bathrooms but I like them. Our master bathroom doesn't have a tub but it's pretty large and it has a large mirror. Our smaller bathroom looks like a regular size bathroom but it does have lots of counter space. They are actually pretty good bathrooms for apts. We do plan on rearranging our office/dean area. We need to move things around a bit to accommodate space for both my sewing and work areas as well as his desks. So we'll be doing that one when he gets back from NC.

  11. Will love to see what you do. White will definitely lighten things up a bit. And I know you'll find some super cool accessories. Design on a Dime!

  12. I pretty much want to change everything about my bathroom! I haven't got a clue what the previous owners where thinking when they put the mismatch of tiles and materials together...

  13. I love your inspiration! Someday I would like a bathroom with some sort of creative tiles, and I have to admit I do like a darkish grey color for the walls. Can't wait to see the progress on your!

  14. Love the inspiration pics! We haven't touched our bathroom since moving in - I don't care for any of the tile, but they did such a quality job on the install its on the way end of our list to change.
Instead I'd like to smooth out the sand paint textured walls and paint them a lighter color - and change all the wood trim to white! Maybe that will go on the 2014 list. I know a new craft space/office for me is on the list though!
