I've noticed fewer people using the word "resolution" lately, anyway, so I wonder if it's on the way out for good? I hope so. Goals are a way more relaxed plan. Here are mine for 2014, in no particular order:
1. Update the bathrooms. Both were remodeled in the 90s... and you can tell. We already did some preliminary work in the one upstairs, but the other one has literally not been touched since we moved in. I put some soap and a hand towel down there and called it good. I want to replace both countertops/faucets, do some more painting, investigate a new toilet--actually, I think this might need its own post. It's a lot to get into here.

2. Go lighter with our paint colors. We've already had a lot of snow this year (Mother Nature is clearly paying us back for having two mild winters in a row) and whenever the white stuff is on the ground, it's so much brighter in the house. Obviously. Because lighter colors will do that. But it made me realize that while none of our colors now are especially dark, they're not as light-bouncy as I'd like them to be. And I want to re-paint all of the main living areas. Crazy? Perhaps. But it's on the list anyway.
3. Read one NEW book per month. The operative word here is new, as you might have guessed from the caps lock. I'm one of those who tends to read my favorites over and over. Which isn't bad, but I could stand to branch out a little. I did really well with new nonfiction books last year, so now I want to find some different novels.

4. Try one NEW recipe per month. Like the book situation, I fall into routines when I cook. It occurred to me over my break that I haven't made a casserole in probably three years, so that's an option I can knock out right away.
5. Add cardio to my workouts. Yoga is great and I plan to keep doing it, but since I sit so much of the day, I feel like I need to move around even more. Lately I've been wondering if we should get a used treadmill/elliptical for the basement, but I don't know how much I'd use it once the weather is done being terrible and I'm back at the arboretum all the time.
6. Re-learn to use the sewing machine. I haven't technically forgotten how to use it, but I'm still not great at anything related to the bobbin--which is because I only sew one thing a year and then immediately forget I even have the machine. Oopsie. So the goal is to learn it for real this time and keep using it.

7. Officially launch the design business. My interior design classes are done in May (holla!). I need to start getting a plan in motion now so I'm ready to hit the ground running as soon as finals are over. I haven't completely hammered out what I'd like to do, but I know it will be a combination of online and local services. I kind of miss having an Etsy shop, so maybe I'll bring back one of them but have home-related products instead of jewelry. MAYBE. It really depends on what else I decide to do.
So tell me about your goals! Do we have any that overlap? What are you most excited about for 2014?
There's so much to comment on here! 1) If you need any bathroom advice, ask. We've done three, and hubs is on the verge of putting on in in the basement (the toilet flushes UP!) so I am a bathroom expert. Sort of. 2) I so want to repaint my workroom a lighter color but I think I'd have to twist hubby's arm to the point of breaking to accomplish that. It's a darker blue and I'd like something I could photograph in. 3) I love that room with the books. I am on a total non-fiction kick right now but it doesn't stop me from grabbing novels at the dump for "someday". 4) We have an elliptical in the basement and it's finally getting some use. Even if you just used it in the winter consistently I think it would be worth it. 5) I can help with sewing too! There are lots of great tutorials out there, and if you learned to sew you could Etsy it up with things you make. :)
ReplyDeleteI would love it if the term 'resolution' disappeared too! I've never been a fan. I love your list and think everything on it is realistic and achievable (which is key). My biggest goal for this year is to make the proper adjustments into motherhood and find a balance with work (vague, yes, but I'm going to do my best to go with that flow instead of forcing things). I'd also like to finish the nursery soon (so close), travel to at least 4 or 5 places (much less than normal for me but this whole baby thing makes it a little more challenging), and continue to learn to focus less on work and more on enjoying life (carried over from 2013).
ReplyDeleteNot going to lie-- super excited to see what is in store for you with your design business. It's just a totally new and exciting adventure! I also need to start doing more cardio. Yoga only goes so far. I have gained 5 pounds since I quit teaching, and as good as that is since I had lost a lot in the past two year due to stress, I don't want to keep gaining. Plus, my heart needs to be in better shape as a bottom line. I have the same problem with books and sewing as well. I've been getting better though slowly but surely!
ReplyDeleteI like how you have goals for so many different areas of your life. Reading one new book a month should be one of my goals this year. Lately when I have a few minutes of downtime, I find a photography article on my phone, which isn't terrible, but reading books again would be better. Best of luck with everything that you have planned for the house and on launching your new business!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you've got a plan, Paige :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, excited about your #6 - you know I love all things sewing related! Good luck with updating the bathrooms, should be fun!
I do the book goal thing as well! That one and more museum visits. And maybe I should take up sewing too!
ReplyDeleteI'm doing the one recipe a month goal too! Don't know how well that will work out...
ReplyDeleteAlso, #7 is so exciting! Congrats on being almost done with classes :)
Sounds like you have a plan for the new year and one that covers many aspects of your life. I look forward to seeing what you plan for your bathroom, and hearing about your plans for your new business.

Excellent plans for the new year, Paige! I think it was 2012 I read 61 books (!) and it just about killed me. Last year I think I read about 30 and that was still kinda hard. I'm thinking two a month is about as much as I can do, so that's my new goal. I'm toying with the idea of an etsy shop too. I'll have to chat you up before I decide, though. Good luck with your goals!
ReplyDeleteCardio is such a good idea!!. It's really great for the heart. I think those are some great goals that you can accomplish his year. Especially with the interior design business. I feel like there are so many ideas out there for you that you can certainly incorporate current online business knowledge.
ReplyDeleteIs that really your sewing room? I would die to have a space like that. I like your goals. They're definitely doable.
ReplyDeleteI wish! Just a room I found on Pinterest. :-)
DeleteGreat goals. I should add one new (vegan) recipe per month to my list for 2014, too. Best of luck as you launch your design career.
ReplyDeleteGreat list of goals. I agree, I rarely hear people use the word "resolutions" anymore. Like you said, goals are spread throughout the year unlike resolutions that start on day 1.
ReplyDeleteExercise is definitely one of my goals this year! I have a free elliptical waiting for me as soon as I have somewhere to put it! Can't wait to get the studio done!
I don't like resolutions either. I quite making them some time back. Who needs a list of stuff one feels guilty for not doing.
ReplyDeleteso here's what I would like to do:
continue working on my house--updating and organizing
work out more
find balance
