2013 Goals: The Final Verdict

Welcome to 2014! Another year in the books, another set of goals mostly complete. Which is crazy because I feel like I was just deciding what they should be. I made a list of things to work on last year--not resolutions, though, because those have too much of a pass/fail vibe, and I think that as long as you're improving you can give yourself a high-five. I'll have a new set of goals to tell you about on Monday, but first let's see how I did now that 2013 is officially over:

1. Exercise everyday. We've already established that setting the bar at "everyday" was a mistake. I'm still moving my butt on a regular basis, which is the important thing for dealing with my scoliosis.

2. Drink more water. Since I've been exercising more, my water intake has increased, too. I even got a cute little bottle to take on my hikes... which have been put on hold since it's been single digit temperatures and I'm not crazy.

3. Read two books a month. I kind of fell off the wagon with this because of finals and the holidays, but I'm already back in gear. I'm in the middle of American Gods by Neil Gaiman and it's excellent.

4. Reach 900 sales in the Oh Nostalgia Wedding Collection and 300 in Oh NostalgiaNope. Life has totally changed. Let's look at this in more detail in number five...

5. Overhaul both product lines. Overhauling isn't quite what happened, because I ended up closing the wedding shop indefinitely on August 1st, and Oh Nostalgia is actually closed now, too, with no immediate plans to reopen. I was a little misty-eyed about it at first, since those shops were a big part of my life for several years and they helped me discover the path I'm on now, but it was time. I was having trouble focusing on things that weren't interior design, so that was a pretty big clue. I'm ready for whatever comes next--which is hopefully getting my design consultations going for real.

Peace out, jewelry-making.

6. Paint the cabinets. DONE! And several months later they still look brand new and are super easy to clean.

7. Plant stuff in the garden. Planted, yes. I planted stuff so hard. Got my hands all dirty and everything. But then I accidentally killed everything when it got hot. (Remembering to water the plants is not exactly top of mind with me, so...)

8. Stick to a budget. Well, we DID just go to Europe, so that's our bad as far as the budget goes. However we're eating at home more, doing house projects ourselves instead of hiring them out, and I might put myself on a clothing/shoes spending freeze until spring. I really don't need anything else, but Forever 21 has a strange power over me. Staying away until the weather warms up will probably be smart.

9. Focus more on interior design. Absolutely, 100%. I'm doing one last semester and then it's ON.

10. Do more DIY projects. I haven't done these in the way I imagined I would, but my god have we been doing a lot to the house. Totally counts.

**Bonus** Figure out the furniture situation in the family room (and preferably put it in there). Done and done. The black Eames knockoff might eventually go into another room, because nobody gets excited about sitting there except me, but for now things are solid.

How did your goals for 2013 turn out? Did anything surprise you? What was the hardest thing for you to work on this year? It was exercise for me, hands down, only because I can't do that while laying around on my computer. It's just so hard to motivate myself when there are pictures of Tom Hiddleston to look at. You know how that goes.

I'll be sharing my 2014 goals on Monday, so pop back over then and see if we have any that match.

  4. It's great that you can look back on all of these with a clear head and be honest with yourself about it. Overall I think you did great.

  6. ohhhhhhh Tom Hiddles.. you totally put that in for me. Honestly.. I can just look at his face and body all day. Well.. then back to reality! I had so many changes (as you know) in the past year that I'm glad I didn't set goals. It would have been difficult to maintain them. I would agree that exercising is the hardest to keep track off. I try my best to workout 3x a week but I really want to get to everyday and I'm getting better at it. One of the things that helped me was setting a time limit. If I tell myself only 20min a day then I'm more inclined to do it than if I say ok. lets workout for an hour!

  7. You did good! I didn't have a lot of small goals for 2013. I did decide that I wanted to go with the flow more (hard for a type A, but I did it) and start a family (check!). Now my biggest goal is to figure out how to sleep when you have a baby. ;)

  8. I'm not the kind of person who is a book worm, even though I love reading blogs and magazines... but two books a month sounds like a totally doable goal, so I'm stealing that one from you! And I really need to get back into walking again. I used to walk almost every single day, now I walk a time or two per week and I can feel the difference... water is totally important too.

I like how you say that your Etsy shops are just how you got to where you are now... I think a lot of us find ourselves in those shoes at one point or another. Wishing you all the best this new year, and with finishing school and getting started on Design! SO Exciting!! :)

  9. Paige, I love that you've decided to focus on design. It's important to do what you love. The pics are gorgeous - I love the first one with the books - would need a whole nother house to put my books into. Now I go to the library because beads, gemstones, wire and books take up a lot of room.

  10. You get an A+ in Adaptability! My garden was a fail, too. I even forget to water house plants. My brother once told me all my plants looked like candidates for last rites. Sad, but true. Not a priority.
Best of luck as you sharpen your focus on Interior Design. I'm tellin' ya --- HGTV is not out of reach. You can do this!! Happy New Year!

  12. wow! I think y'all did great! I can never think so far ahead to make plans/goals. I do have some tentative plans to update things around my home this year. Particularly improve my curb appeal. I'm not sure I have the funds and landscape knowledge (or guts) to follow through with it. I need to enter (and win) a big contest! hahahah There, that's my goal. :)

I look forward to seeing your 2014 goals.

    Happy New Year Paige!

  13. Great job! When I think about my goals last year... well many amazing things happened, but not exactly the way I planned, but I guess that's life, right!? Have you written any more about your scoliosis? I have recently been told that I have touch of it, and I would love to hear what you do to treat it. Thanks! Liz

    1. I mention it in passing sometimes, but I've never done a dedicated post about it. As for treatment, I do yoga and core strengthening exercises at home and then see a chiropractor once a week. Hope that helps! :-)
