Dressing Up in the Cold

I had to do something obnoxious recently: dress up when it was below zero. Hubsey's office holds a belated holiday party in January every year and significant others are invited. I love going because his co-worker friends are a fun bunch, but I was irritated that the polar vortex couldn't leave us alone for THAT ONE DAY.

Normally this is a dress-wearing situation that leans toward the glittery side of things, but I had a feeling that nobody would bother. At least, I wasn't going to:

Gasp! A lady in pantaloons?! (I know, how scandalous.) Most of the other women went this route, too. We still looked really nice and since I know a lot of folks are getting all gussied up for Valentine's Day this week, I wanted to talk about some common threads I saw at the party. Here's the easy way to dress up in the cold:

>> Suit up! And by that I mean: just wear pants. I wore them to the party and had way more fun because I was comfortable. You won't be AS dressed up, it's true, but sometimes when the polar vortex is crapping all over everything, exceptions have to be made.

>> Layers are your friend. I never know exactly HOW cold I'm going to be at a place until I get there, so I like to do a blouse, then a cardigan, then a blazer. This also means I have options in case the venue has the heat cranked up. Nothing is worse than being trapped in a thick sweater when you can't do anything about it.

>> Wear your hair down. This might not be the time for an updo. I'm always significantly warmer in the winter on the days my hair is down. It's like a built-in scarf.

>> Platforms = warmth. Shoes with a bit of a platform will keep your feet off of the stupid cold ground. It's hard to see in the picture, but my shoes were that way and I'm so glad I wore them. It really does make a difference.

>> Dresses can be warm, too. Sometimes it's unavoidable. Maybe you're going to a winter wedding and you just can't do pants. Look for a dress that's made of wool or thicker cotton (Banana usually has some nice options) to cut the wind. Add a sleek blazer or cropped cardigan for added warmth, and don't forget to wear it with tights instead of regular stockings.

Just for fun, I made another dressy-pants outfit:

blazer  //  blouse  //  pants  //  clutch  //  shoes  //  similar earrings

Helloooooo, clutch! And blouse. And shoes (which are not platforms, but if you're just darting into the building from your car, you'll be fine). I'll have to pull myself together again for a nice dinner out this weekend, and you can bet I'll be wearing some variation of this.

Are you dressing up this week? What's your plan to battle the weather? Any braver souls than I planning to wear a dress anyway?

  1. Love the shoes but now you are EVEN MORE taller than what you are actually are. When I wear heels... I look like an adult. I probably would go with black boot cut pants that are slender through the hips. Skinny jeans just make me look frumpy.. they are not the curvy girls' friend.

    1. Ha!! I can never be too tall. As for the pants, I have the opposite problem! Skinny jeans are the most flattering on me, while boot cut is only... meh.

  2. I'm no fan of parties, special occasions etc in winter. No fun dressing up when temps are below zero! Your outfit is nice and sleek. The berry earrings and shoes are lovely :)

  3. I rarely wear a dress or skirt anyway -- but then my "office" is in my house so no need!! Love that pale pink blouse and the flowing lapel / cutaway style of the jacket. That's my idea of dressy! And how did you ever find that perfectly matched clutch!

  4. Can we please talk about women who are still wearing flats in this freezing cold weather with BARE feet, no tights or anything? Ugh! You got the right idea with this outfit. :)

  5. I totally agree about the hair! It's a great way to keep warm. I'm not planning to dress up at all this week, but if I did I'd have to plan for rain and humidity!

  6. you just reminded me of a thick cotton long sleeve cranberry colored dress I got from banana this year. (I already forgot about it because its so cold!) maybe I'll brave that on Friday.
The blouse, cardigan, and blazer is such a great suggestion. I've been avoiding my typical blouse blazer combo because I'm always so cold as my desk at work, I've been forgetting the cardigan!

  8. The cold and the snow are getting really old, I can't wait for it to warm up. Your outfit was cute and perfect for the weather. I hope you had a great time at the party!

  9. I don't understand how you have bare feet in those shoes and your sleeves rolled up! I haven't seen my feet since October lol. I need so many more layers than this when the temps head toward zero, even when I'm trying to look somewhat pulled together. I don't have enough layers on ME (i.e., I'm a twig) so I have to make do with wooly layers borrowed from sheep. :)

    1. I was wearing knee-high stockings! The poor things weren't bare, haha.

  10. I feel like dressing up in extreme weather is THE WORST. I mean there are only so many kinds of nice shoes you can wear. You did a great job...and I love the other outfit you created. It was 80 degrees in LA today (yeah, is this a real city?) and I have to dress up tomorrow and I'm really hoping I don't sweat in my pants and blouse! You probably thought that when you asked people if they were battling the weather, it would be cold weather! haha
