The Pinterest Challenge: Results

Let me just rip off the Band-Aid: the ruler table didn't happen this weekend.

I know, I'm sad too. Care to guess what the problem was? Nobody sells wooden rulers! Well they do, but they tend to be website-only and since I kind of needed them immediately, this will just have to wait a little while. But I promise, it's coming.

So what DID I do for The Pinterest Challenge?

I used this pin as a jumping-off point and re-vamped a shirt! I was originally going to look for a basic tee, but then I stumbled upon this and for some reason took it home with me:

Well, that's not doin' me any favors. It's too big, too long, too... dumpy. Part of that might be because it's technically some sort of pajama (it's from the intimates department, anyway), but still. Not my finest moment.

Yet I could see the potential. Which basically means I liked the lace on the shoulders and wouldn't take no for an answer.

How I made it better:
1. Cut off 7 inches of baggy sleeve.
2. Cut off the bottom seam all the way around. I held onto this.
3. Used the sleeve fabric to make two small belt loops. Sewed them on.
4. Took that bottom seam and used it as a belt.
5. Decided the front was still too long and chopped off another 3 inches.

And this is how it looks now, worn two ways:

Closed.

Open, with the belt tied in the back.

In the end, it took me about 2 hours--all of which was spent in front of the TV, so if you're actually concentrating it will probably go faster.

I recommend starting with something that can be fixed by removing fabric as opposed to adding it. And also something on clearance, so that if you totally botch it you're only out a few bucks. This was $15, marked down from $58 (which seems... generous).

Did you join The Pinterest Challenge? What did you make? Maybe you busted out some DIY skills on something un-Pinterest-related? Feel free to share a link in the comments.

And for those who want to check out more projects, here are four other ladies who participated: Katie, Emily, Lana, and Sherry.

  4. Amanda, the funny thing is, I only sewed on the belt loops! Everything else was just fabric removal. :-)

  10. To the gals who say they can't sew--I can't either. Really, this was the easiest thing ever. Maybe I should do a tutorial?

  13. The table was cool, but it looks like a LOT of work. The shirt makeover is far more impressive, although I may just think that because I work with wood a lot, and I am lousy with fabric.
