Pictures of a camera... taken with my phone. |
It's a Canon PowerShot SX260 HS, and you may have noticed that it's not a DSLR like I was originally thinking about. It's a regular old point-and-shoot, and there are several reasons why I stuck with that category instead of taking the plunge. One, I'm cheap. I thought I would be cool with paying DSLR money for a camera (read: $500 is the low end), but when it came down to it, I just couldn't. Number two, there's a steep learning curve. When I showroomed a few cameras at Best Buy, I had a lot of trouble getting things to look right. I would improve with practice, but this point of my life isn't right for that kind of time investment. And three, DSLRs are just so big. (That's what she said.) I'm used to putting a tiny camera into my purse or pocket and calling it a day. Hauling around those extra few pounds also lost its appeal after I spent some time in the store.
Look at the zooooooom. |
Once I ruled those out, it actually made things easier. I wanted to stick with Canon since I already knew the menu and was happy with my old one until too much time passed. Technology advanced, and since the poor thing can't grow new parts like a starfish, it was time for a new machine.
As for the technical stuff, it has 12.1 megapixels, 20x optical zoom, a 25mm wide-angle lens, and it shoots full 1080p HD video. I use it in the manual mode and it does exactly what I need it to. My product pictures are brighter and the white balance actually makes things white. The settings are extremely easy to change and while I haven't shot any video yet, the online reviews said it works well. I paid $175 for mine on Amazon the week after Christmas but their current price is up to $275, and Best Buy has it for $229.
I love it. A big gold star for you, camera.
What kind of picture-taking device do you have? Did you upgrade to a DSLR? Maybe you just use your phone? Anybody else in the point-and-shoot club with me?
My fiance surprised me with a DSLR on Christmas! I have always wanted one but up until recently I've just been to irresponsible to save enough money. It IS a total learning curve, and sometimes frustrating, but I have lots of free time so I'm looking forward to it. :) I'm glad you enjoy your new camera!
ReplyDeleteI'm in the point & shoot club with ya! My camera is a Canon Powershot too, just a few years older. It does everything I need it to. Sometimes I do wish it had a remote for outfits posts but if that's my only compliant, it's doing pretty good in my books :)
ReplyDeleteAfter my camera got ruined in Mexico, I had to get a new one too. And like you, I love my Canons, so I got another point and shoot. While the thought of a DSLR is nice, I didn't get one for all the reasons you mentioned. I know I don't have time to invest in learning how to use it, so there is no point in spending the money right now.
ReplyDeleteI got the SX120IS and I'm loving it :)
I really want a DSLR camera but they are too expensive and even with my discount I get for working for an electronics company I still can't afford one. I currently have a point and shoot with some DSLR capabilities. It is a Fujifilm Finepix S4500. It's a little bulky to carry around because it's has a similar body as a DSLR but it was like half the price and it took great pictures. I also like that some of the features are like a DSLR because it's helping me learn how to settings and what not. I do hope my next purchase is a DSLR but I also want another point and shoot so I can have a easy to carry camera for when I travel.
ReplyDeletesanta brought me a dslr. lots to learn. much like my old 35mm, but haven't been using that steady for a while now so i'm having fun getting used to it. a long way to go though.
ReplyDeletei still have my little lumix to stick in my purse for easy backup!
Yay! Congrats! I'm a Canon girl too. I do have a DSLR (thank you Best Buy payment plan) but I think a good point and shoot can take really great photos too. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the upgrade! I'm glad that you're enjoying your new camera. I know that it will continue to be amazing. I am glad that I made the SLR jump for Christmas, but I completely understand your reasons for sticking with point and shoot. I am not planning to get rid of my PowerShot and love having it in my purse for spontaneous shoots.
ReplyDeleteI bought myself a Canon T3 DSLR last year and love it! My H uses a Canon Point and Shoot, older model of yours. Although since I don't typically tote my DSLR around with me, I end up with a lot of iphone pics as well :O)

Congrats on you new camera! Cameras are worth the investment, I spent a lot of money for mine about 10 years ago and it's still a great camera.

Haha...gold star for you camera! I can tell you have found a new love, here.
ReplyDeleteWell, i use a little point and shoot Canon...the kind that often goes on sale for $99. BUT...I'm not half bad with my photo editing program...because I'm not going to put up with shoddy contrast, no ma'am.
WOW!!! I am so jealous!
ReplyDeleteYay for the new camera! Can't wait to see the pictures. And I so know what you mean about DSLRs. The pictures can be so stunning, but I just can't justify the price.
ReplyDeleteUm, Peter would be cracking up at your "that's what she said joke." Anyhoo, I have a really old powershot that I still throw in my purse when I can't be bothered with a huge, heavy dslr; it's a great little camera. And you're right about the brightness. That was an adjustment I had to make when I started using a dslr more often, you have to work to get the white balance right; whereas, with my little point-and-shoot, I pretty much didn't have to do anything at all. I think the new photos you posted look great! Speaking of cameras, I got an error message on mine that I need to clean my lens contacts, so there's that too...way less maintenance with a powershot.
ReplyDeleteThat's what she said! Love it. Congrats on the new purchase. Can't wait to see all the beautiful things you capture.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the middle. My sony NEX5 is a mirror less - which is kind of a DSLR, but doesn't flip the picture around - so there is no view finder like a DSLR, just a screen like a point a shoot. It's also much smaller, just not as small as a point and shoot. I couldn't be happer with it. I use it often. Before i was so frustrated wiht the quality of my photos, now I just need to crop before posting to Etsy, no more edits.
ReplyDeletegreat it's wonderful information. thanks for sharing
