HGTV Dream Home...?

I'm really curious to see what you guys think about this. HGTV recently unveiled their latest Dream Home (which you can win, by the way, if you're interested), and I'm having some mixed feelings. There are always things I like and dislike every year, but this one seems... well, let's just look at the pictures.

Things start off fine in the entryway. That bench for putting on shoes is smart, and you could even stash them right underneath. Points for that! Plus, the wood ceiling is beautiful.

The house has a great room at the back, and while I'm not crazy about the fabric on those chairs, all of that natural light and the high ceilings make up for it.

Here's a view of the room going the other direction. This is when things started sliding downhill for me. Before we go, take a look at the console by the windows. Pretty.

Hmm. A green ceiling. I might like it better if they had a light fixture to break up all of that color, but they don't. I'm also not a fan of the zen cabinets mixed with the shaker doors. I know that all of your cabinets don't have to match, but this is TOO different for me. And I have to address those giant plants. These pictures have obviously been styled for the shoot, but couldn't they have done something more true-to-life? I'm not gonna cook with those all up in my business.

The kitchen is open to the dining room, which I like for entertaining purposes, but again with the green! Those poor chairs. I cannot.

I have to say, this is a very colorful house. Here's the loft that overlooks the great room. I love any iteration of exposed trusses or beams, and these are magnificent. The glass fixtures between them are perfect, too. I also like the entertainment center, but that's about it. Sigh.

Now that you think I'm all doom and gloom, I'll switch gears. Can you say spectacular bathroom? This is actually supposed to be for the kids, but I want it for myself at 27:

This other bathroom (off the guest room) is the only space I would genuinely want in my house, but as stunning as I think it is... it feels a little out of place, no? It's just so neutral compared to the rest of the house.

Shazam! And the color is back. I think it's awesome that they used blue and green for a little girl's room. It goes to show that any color can be considered feminine if you want it to be.

Here's the master. Again, not as bright as the rest, but I like the mixed patterns and textures. The subtle plaid on the drapes is nice, as is the rug.

This is one of the more bizarre-o things I've seen. Not the bunk beds themselves, because they're cute, but their placement. This is the "bunk niche" at the top of the stairs. Yep, these beds are in the hallway! Aside from the general weirdness of that, both of the real bedrooms up here have en suite bathrooms, so if cousins Timmy and Jim Bob have to pee in the middle of the night, they have to go all the way downstairs to do so.

And here's one more thing I don't understand. Over on the left is the game room... which is open to the garage. Yay for exhaust fumes?

Overall, I would say this is not my dream house. What do you think? How do you feel about all the colors? And the quirky layout? Do you want to pick up one of those bathrooms and plunk it into your own house? (I do.)

  1. So, this does fit in with the South Carolina style...think Rainbow Row in Charleston. I wouldn't mind living there, that's for sure. But I agree with you on almost every point. The neutral spaces are great but don't mind well with the bright modern spaces and the whole garage thing is weird. I would have to neutralize some of the color (Can you do that? Is it allowed?) and get some new dining chairs for sure.

  2. A may or may not be drooling a bit after seeing this post... so much natural light and so many breathtaking color combinations!

  3. I'm so bad with interior design that I'll take anything with a hint of color in it. The house didn't like that bad but I didn't like how the Master bedroom seemed a bit cramped. I like a lot of space and I can see myself bumping into stuff in the middle of the night in the master bedroom.

  4. I'm definitely not digging all that green. But the living room with that awesome fireplace is great! (needs a mantel though) And I like how everything is open. I wish we had that more in our home.
I do love the greens and blues together in the bathroom and bedrooms.
I guess if they just want to give it away, I'd take it :)

  5. I like your commentary. I agree with you, I also have mixed feelings on the home, however if I were to win it I certainly wouldn't be complaining to anyone about it. Got a little chuckle on your tske on the plants in the kitchen.

  6. I'm underwhelmed. It doesn't have any wow factor.

  7. I really like the girls room and the loft. My kids really like the garage and game room set up. I'd need to walk thru the house to tell you how I feel about the layout. TFS!

  8. The neutral bathroom is the only room that's my style at all. Way too much going on. There are definitely some innovative things about the design, but overall I'm not a fan.

  9. "I'm not gonna cook with those all up in my business." <---that seriously made me laugh, I just picture you swatting the plants out of the way every time you pass it. Overall, this house is a bit TOO much for me. There are some nice parts (girls bathroom & master br) but not too many. I like a home to feel cozy and this just feels too department store-ish.

  10. Although vaulted ceilings are beautiful I get very hung up on heating costs.... I like the kitchen, exposed beams in the loft and the garage ALOT! I'd also love the bunkbeds if they were in a bedroom. I do think they could have stepped it up in the bathrooms - I feel like they are lacking some texture.

  11. The styling on HGTV's dream house is pretty bad every year. But having said that, you can remove the curtains, furniture, etc. so I try to focus more on the architecture. I like the beams in the vaulted ceiling. The bathroom is also nice and simple. There's not a lot else to like here. This house looks like it was designed by a builder instead of designed by an architect/interior designer. But it would be nice to have a vacation house on Kiawah island, which is gorgeous of course.

  12. Oh my goodness I couldn't agree more! Timmy and Jim bob would have to per out the window at my house, or sleep with their parents in the garage lol.

  13. i eagerly await the dream home premier every year, i always love them! This house was definitely a lot less "wow!" for me than previous ones (the one in vermont?! swoon)... but the location and yard is so beautiful I would LOVE to have it!

  14. The colors are strong. I love bright blues and greens, but I wouldn't use them so heavily for home decorating. The layout of the house is beautiful, though.

  15. I am not digging all the green and the layout is a little weird, but if I were to win that house I think I could make it work. I would just need to find a space for my studio and office.

  16. Agreed, the layout is weird (bunkbeds in a hallway? couldn't they spare some space to make an actual room?!), the kitchen just seems off, and they could've chosen more muted colors! Definitely not MY dream home--but those bathrooms are nice, if a little inconvenient and big to clean.

  17. Agreed- they went a little crazy with the color, and some of those textiles are hideous, but, it'd still take a free luxury house. Or is it?? Just think of the taxes you'd be slapped with it you won!!

  18. The railing on the loft reminds me a bit of s boat. It would be okay in a house styled differently, I suspect... I do like the big windows everywhere and the wooden ceiling beams!

  19. Overall, the house looks awesome. Although there are few corners that do come together for me, I like how the patterns are used in every space. And yes, this is one colorful house, and it is the reason why I like it so much.

  20. In my opinion, using lots of colors and details in a room is a design risk that every designer has to tread on. You can use as many colors as you want, but be sure that all the elements blend and go well together. A splash of colors would certainly give the space an interesting character.

  21. This is without a doubt a dream home! Do you have plans of building a home that is as grand as this? Well, you seem very amazed with the overall design of this house. You can't blame yourself since the pictures will truly encourage you to come up with your own beautiful home as well.
