Dressing Like A Frenchwoman Part 1

I've been going through a bit of a Francophile phase lately. First I read Bringing Up Bebe (and before you even ask me: no, this is not an announcement) and then I started reading about French women and their amazing style. Of course, I've known for a long time that French women are fabulous, but I never pinned down any solid reasons why until I read this article and this article.

There were a lot of pointers out there, but I'll get into the other ones next time because there was one that really made me do a double-take. French women have no problem repeating the same items, or even entire outfits, a few days apart.

I read that and actually said, "Say what now?" out loud to my computer. I mean, yeah, sometimes I wear the same yoga pants for three days when I'm home with my beads, or I'll wear the same outfit to dinner two nights in a row because it's not really dirty, but French women do this all the time?!

The French philosophy is that if you looked good on Monday, then you'll look just as good three days later--so wear that outfit again! French women also tend to have much smaller wardrobes than Americans, and they focus on classic, well-tailored items that are easy to mix-and-match. Meanwhile, in America we're taught that we need to have huge closets full of different clothes, even if we don't wear everything that often (or ever). Honestly, having too many options just makes me tired, and it makes getting dressed more difficult than it needs to be. How many of us have stood in front of a packed closet, yet still felt like we had nothing to wear? I'm raising my hand for that one...

Which leads me to a little experiment I just did. I tend to gravitate toward a handful of favorite items, anyway, so why not wear exclusively those for a while and see how it goes?

These are four outfits from the past week, and while they're not identical, the same basic idea is there. Skinny jeans with a blouse, covered by a blazer/sweater, and paired with my brown boots or blue flats. I even wore the same green necklace on three of the days pictured here, and have been carrying the same metallic tote bag for several weeks.

Those Frenchwomen are onto something, because instead of worrying about when I wore something last, I just grabbed what I felt looked best on me that day and rolled out the door. I consistently felt better about my appearance since I was wearing what I genuinely wanted to, not any "filler" to space out my favorite items long enough to rock them again. Nobody has said anything about my clothes being so similar, either. I really don't think they've noticed.

This was so fun, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to simplify. Feel free to come back and link to your pictures in the comments if you decide to give it a shot. I'll have some more French insight to share with you next week, likely with more real-life examples. Is anybody else into French fashion? Do you repeat similar outfits all the time? What are your favorite things to mix-and-match?

  1. Nice! I love the simplicity. I am really bad about always wearing the same ripped pair of jeans just because I like them. My classmates must think they're the only pair of pants I own!

  2. Fun experiment! I love that you can add a different top to the same blazer and make a whole new outfit.
When going out with friends, I always try to remember what I wore the last time we saw them. I hate wearing the same thing every time I see someone...even though I'm sure they have no idea...lol :)

  3. Yes! I wear outfits multiple times throughout the week especially if I haven't gone anywhere or if I like a particular item. I try my best to try new outfits but I always go back to whats comfortable and I usually wear those things out. Then I have to buy new stuff so it's a vicious cycle. I like the change up on you and They look like different outfits to me. I wouldn't even think you are wearing the same things.

    1. Thanks! I think having a different shirt on everyday was the main factor. It made me feel kind of sneaky. :-)

  4. I literally laughed out loud at your yoga pants comment became I am in the same boat on that one. I feel like I always have that "ugh, I have nothing to wear" feeling whenever I walk into my closet, which happens to be overflowing. Definitely checking out those articles!

  5. My closet is ridiculous yet I feel like I wear the same thing. I also find myself saying "I need to get _____" because a lot of the time I'm just too lazy to plan out what to wear the night before. Maybe those Frenchies are on to something....and eating dessert 24/7 too. :) But this does give me an idea for the next time I go through my closet to clean it out (which is pretty soon actually).

  6. YES! I repeat similar outfits all the time! some somethings feel odd doing so.
My MO is jeans, blouse, blazer just about everyday for work. I currently have 3 blazers and about 5 blouses I really like. I would save so much stress worring aobut adding to my blouse or blazer collection if I just tought like the French - I think I will and stop worrying about looking the same all the time.

  7. This is a huge part of the eco-fashion movement too - investing in a few key pieces then mixing and matching. You look great and I'd never know that you weren't wearing different outfits!

  8. I always wear the same outfits, partly because I don't have a lot of clothes, but even if I suddenly got lots and lots of money and went shopping, I'd still probably repeat outfits. I'd say this isn't really a French thing, but an entire rest of the world thing.

  9. omg I love this!

First thing: do you ever read Pink of Perfection? She strikes me as your kindred spirit. Her best polyvore collection:

Second thing: good post to tie in with Earth Day coming up: we freaking do too much laundry! My skinny grey jeans get beaucoup de wear before I actually launder them. Not so they're yucky, but for sure I wear them three times before they're on the heap!

  10. What a great experiment! I'd love to give this a try sometime. It would be a refreshing change of pace.

  11. Fun experiment! I'm definitely going through a phase right now where I'm trying to figure out what are my favorites, and trim down the rest.

  12. I love all your looks! Each one is a little different, and very classic. I have been into only wearing classic pieces for years. I have a pretty small wardrobe, but I have figured out how to make my outfits look different. I look forward to the next instalment of Dressing Like a Frenchwoman.

  13. Viva la France! I tend to wear black slacks (my self-imposed business casual "uniform")--and COMFORTABLE black flats-- I pair the slacks with different tops -- sometimes a sweater or sweater set, other times a blouse or blazer or statement jacket. My "go to" out fit is my black slacks and a 3/4 sleeve black turtleneck sweater.

  14. It's a terrific idea. I also wear the same things - but a week later. Wonder if anyone would notice if I wore the same pants and a different top to work a few days later.

    I'll stay tuned.

  15. Actually, I wear the same outfit two - sometimes three days in a row :) I get overwhelmed by too much clothing and prefer classic styles in basic colours with some bright ones for variety!

  17. I can't believe I forgot to come back and comment yesterday!

Anyway, you know I love this and I'm so glad you sent me that link to that article because it's totally opened up how I think about my clothes! I was so happy to purge out stuff that I don't love (and thinking on it now, there is more in there I really should toss). My favorite thing you said is, "they focus on classic, well-tailored items". I think that is the key- well-tailored- not too tight, not too baggy, not oversized. When you have pieces that FIT you instantly look better.

I love your outfits and they totally look like something I would wear. I actually should send you a photo of what I wore on Easter- blazer, scarf, light sweater, skinny jeans, flats. You would be proud. :)

  18. I definitely tend to do this because I get stuck with certain outfits that I really love. I have a few pieces that I just try to mix and match with other things. If I feel uncomfortable with what I'm wearing, I tend to totally change my outfit. Sometimes I think that my students probably think I'm crazy because I'll rotate similar outfits from week to week. On the flip side, I remember having a teacher that never wore the same outfit twice in one school year. I didn't understand how she had so many clothes, but thinking about it now, I don't think that I'd want that many choices! I'm too indecisive as is!

  19. A great post and experiment; even when I wear more memorable outfits; I tend to repeat them (once in a week for work and then once during the weekends). I do agree with the idea of repeating an outfit if it's going to make you feel good about yourself!

  20. I have been getting Zoloft to deal with persistent despair for 10 many years.

I get two hundred mg per day. And, of course, I have had important weight obtain with Zoloft.
I began out at about 130. I now excess weight about
    162. Some of it may be as a result of possessing gone via menopause,
but I do think that Zoloft would be to blame for most of it.
It will be good to go from the Zoloft and find out if that might support
my fat troubles, but regrettably that's not an option for me. If anybody has had success in dropping their Zoloft excess weight, I would adore to know how they did it.

  22. Hi !
I'm french, and I have to say that you're quite right. I don't wear jeans because, in my opinion, it's not really "classy" but I wear my black leggings all the time because it suits with everything. But I change the shirt, the jacket, the shoes and the purse (matching with the shoes of course) So people think that I have a lot of clothes! But it's not THAT true. I have a few basics, and some more original stuff.
I've been to the USA a few years ago, and I didn't see a huge difference between you guys, and french people.First, because we have a lot of similiar shops (Zara is a perfect one. Asos is amazing too)
