Like I did earlier in the year with the HGTV Dream Home, I'm going to take a peek inside the new Smart Home, which you can sign up to win until the 31st. This time the house is in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, which seems like a lovely place, but I need to tell you something before we get to the pictures: the house is Themed with a capital T. And I bet you know what theme that is.
Let's start with the foyer, since that's the first place most people see. I like the thick trim, the wood ceiling, the floor color... The paint color is a smidge bright for me, but I've seen worse. Not bad, foyer!
Just kidding. Below is the foyer nook that leads to the master suite. See what I mean about things getting matchy? Also, if you're going to do a feature wall, then it should stand out. The lamps and anchor artwork make it too busy in there. Plus, I'd like another color for contrast.
This is the kitchen, obviously. I don't have anything bad to say about the room itself. It's fresh and light, and feels beach-y without being literal. (I hate literal.) I just have one little nitpick about the styling: I don't like the turquoise dishes and pots. Another color would've been a wee more interesting.
Sidenote: look at how different the island cabinets look in this picture. I wonder which is the more accurate color:
There isn't much I don't like in the dining room. The china cabinet is beautiful, as is the chandelier. And the rug! Come to my house, rug. The one weird thing for me is the curtains. I get the point of them (open floorplan with an option to close it!) but they just don't work for me. Maybe it's the stripes? Or the fact that this house has great views, so why would you want to hide them? I don't know.
This is the art above the china cabinet. Kind of theme-y, but for me it's a new way of using seashells and I appreciate that:
Oooookay. The family room. Can we talk about the giant marlin above the doors and that honkin' seashell in the back corner? This will sound harsh, but stuff like that is so cliche to me. Especially since we all know they're fake. If you actually catch a fish that big, cool! Hang that baby up! But this fake marlin that I've seen over and over again? Pass.
As far as seaside decor goes, I actually love the coral on the coffee table. It says "ocean" without screaming it in your face. Plus, it works with other kinds of decor, too, which makes it a great purchase. I think they picked some nice fabrics in here, too, though I do wish they put a different pillow on the side chairs.
[Edited to add: DUH! I forgot the picture of the kid's room!] The headboards are cool, but again with the theme. It's just... sigh. I wanted them to use a different shade of blue at some point.
This is the master bedroom and by far my favorite. I want to get rid of that plant table at the end of the bed (how fast do you think somebody would trip over that in the dark?), and I want a pop of color somewhere, but overall I think it's really pretty and soothing. Thumbs-up for ceiling height curtains, too.
Just to keep us on our toes, they made the guest room a reddish coral that doesn't have any beach paraphernalia. The wall color is nice and the mismatched nightstands are cool, but those curtains overwhelm me. It feels like a small room and that's a lot of look.
Finally, here's the deck. Helloooooo party zone! You could easily have 30 people out there. I have nothing bad to say about this. Hubsey is all over that outdoor kitchen.
Since this is the Smart Home they have all kinds of fancy technology built in. I'm no tech genius, but they have a central command zone for your door locks, lights, pool settings, window shades, security cameras, and entertainment center that sounds pretty snazzy.
So what do you think of this? I like it more than the Dream Home, but that bar was set pretty low, wasn't it? What's your favorite space in here? Are you into this theme? Do you have a deep and unyielding love for fake Marlins and now hate me? (I hope not.)
Overall, I like it except for the marlin! Lol Love the color, but could be toned down.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Yeah, that marlin needs to go. I also agree about the weird accent wall in the foyer- it's just dizzying to look at.
ReplyDeleteI would've gone with orange or red patterned dishes in the kitchen. It's got a lot of solid color going on, could use a contrast.
I like the curtains in the guest room, but I would change the bedding a bit. It's got the opposite problem from the kitchen, too many patterns going on.
I love the master bedroom, and the living room, and the deck.
This is such a beautiful house but I don't know if it's me. I'm such a simple minimalist person that it's a little busy. However, it's also because I have no skills with interior design.
ReplyDeleteI also wanted to tell you that I met an interior designer last weekend. His clients have $$$ because he was telling me all of these stories and what he does. He also showed me pictures of his house and it was AMAZING.
The overall color scheme is way too match-y for my taste, as is the general theme of the house. The coral is a nice pop of color. It would have been nice to see more of that. Overall it certainly isn't terrible, but I agree that it is lacking. Nothing too special about it.
ReplyDeleteYou said exactly everything that I was thinking. I hate literal, too. Anchors, seashells, marlins, oh my. Too much turquoise... and this coming from someone that is obsessed with turquoise! But I do love the wide trim, the kitchen and the spacious deck area.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I loved reading your comments. It's all a bit too much for me. My favourites are the kitchen and the deck. But I think that's because I have a teeny tiny balcony and a very small kitchen, and I like basically every outside area and kitchen that are a bit more spacious than mine.
ReplyDeleteI like the use of blue but had to agree that I was ready to see a wall that was not that shade. I like the blue dishes in the kitchen--but not in that kitchen. They seem lost and since blue is my current favorite color I would not want it lost.
ReplyDeleteAnd as someone that grew up on the coast (one block from the water), I am over any fish on a wall.
Some of the spaces definitely had too much going on -like the accent wall. And the curtains are a little weird too. Never seen those in a dining room, and not sure why you would to close in the space like that. And no railing on the deck is just screaming disaster. But beggars can't be choosers haha, I still entered to win!
ReplyDeleteI love all the turquoise and white...just not in every single room. And that focal wall definitely gets a thumbs down.
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with the outside though! That patio is awesome!
Wow, that design behind the mirror...I could not have that in a house! I agree that it is too matchy, but I do like the kitchen (minus the dishes and pots that seem to be different shades of turquoise). I think the giant marlins are a little cheesy, but I also don't really care. A lot of my family is from Florida and stuff like that is normal there! The master is nice, but I don't like the kid's room at all.
ReplyDeleteMy man is super into interior design. He loves looking at design magazines and I can just imagine him looking at your blog post with me! He would like that it has color (he really doesn't like the very white rooms that have seemed somewhat popular recently), but I know he would find it all way too busy and matching.
Turquoise overload! I agree that the master bedroom is the best room in the house. I also like the deck, but again with the turquoise table!
ReplyDeleteI've been entering often!! I just love the kitchen and the family room!
ReplyDeleteI know the odds aren't good, but my motto is, "You can't win if you don't enter."
This home is definitely not my favorite! Nothing 'comfy' about it! I enjoy being home, so this one is not it!
ReplyDeleteI am so not a fan of the beachy theme. If I had to pick a room the master bedroom would be my favorite, but I agree with you it needs a pop of color. Thanks for sharing.
