DIY: Chipboard Holiday Art

It feels so good to be doing a DIY project again. My groove picked a convenient time to come back because Handmade Holidays 2013 kicks off next Tuesday! (Get. Ready.) There will be a ton of gift ideas, including a handful of goodies you can easily make yourself. I know some people are already doing holiday prep, so here's a teaser project to tide you over until next week. Think of it as an appetizer.

DIY Chipboard Holiday Art

Side note--yes, I have already started putting my Christmas decorations up. Don't judge me.

Supplies:
-- chipboard letters (mine are from the dollar spot at Target)
-- kraft or scrapbook paper
-- tape
-- scissors
-- fine point black marker, optional (I used a Sharpie pen)
-- picture frame

Steps:
All you have to do is trim the paper to fit your frame (this one is an 8x10) and then use the tape to keep your letters in place. A teensy little roll on the back will be plenty since the glass in the frame will keep things secure, too. I chose tape instead of glue in case I want to change the phrase someday.

Originally I only had the silver "Let It Snow," but it seemed a little lonely in there all by itself. Since the holidays are about togetherness, I busted out my trusty Sharpie pen and finished the line of the song.

For those of you who like more color (which is probably everyone), I made a second version using pretty red scrapbook paper as the background. Look at how it makes the silver pop:

I like this project because you can literally make it say anything you want. And it doesn't have to be Christmas-y, either. You can do a Hanukkah message, make a birthday sign, or even whip up a group of these and list what your family is thankful for this year. Really, it's whatever you want to do with it.

This is easy enough for little hands to help with, too.

Have you been getting your DIY on? Or putting up holiday decorations? (I kind of skipped right from Halloween to Christmas this year. My bad.) What would your version of this project say?

  3. These are so cute! We have a 'no Christmas decorations until after thanksgiving' rule, but thanksgiving us so late this year so I may have to break it. :)

  11. fun project!
I've noted some neighbors have wreaths up already. A house I drive by regularly has had lights up for over a month.
